Any tips to share from those that were there in past years?

    So far I was told:
    bring a small folding chair
bring a mat to stand on and good shoes
sit often and from the start

Any pre-event stuff to do on Wednesday?

We actually get into Pitt on Monday morn.

The floor mat thing may end up more trouble than it's worth. Not all players will want it there, so you'll be picking it up and putting it down a lot. If that's ok, then full speed ahead.

I haven't had a chair either year. Last year the number of available chairs was greatly increased, and in most banks they were near by - not everywhere, but only a few of the rows left you wanting a place to sit. Having your own small portable is a guarantee though. I did ok both years sitting down between rounds. If you're not playing with A division players, the rounds usually end early enough that you have almost an hour between on the non-lunch-break rounds.

There's a local pin-golf tournament on the day before - but some people who have done it regretted it Thursday morning because it ran late and is at a bar, so there's drinking. If you're not all that serious about a good night sleep before rounds start Thursday you might want to check that out. In the non pinball category, there's Kayak rentals on the river right near the convention center that Jay tried to talk me into last year when we had time to kill. If that's your sort of thing. There's also rental bikes for the downtown area. Since you're going to have a few days it's worth it to go up the 'mountain' one of the evenings for the view of downtown. There's some restaurants up there, and a big public overlook thing.

    that sounds great!

Lets talk food. Because there's a lot of meals to be had over the days.

"The Meatball place" is one of my favorites so far (Emporio at Sienna Mercato - http://www.siennamercato.com), definitely planning on that again. Might have to venture upstairs to the pizza place this year.

Anybody know there the steak sandwiches of legend are from? Is that Gaucho? or somewhere else?

Also curious where people hit for breakfast in the mornings.

Breakfast - pamelasdiner.com is pretty good!
Pizza - Mineo's is really good

If you're into Amusement parks Kennywood is not a far drive at all and then there is Sand Castle (water park)

I have eaten at Nicky's Thai Kitchen, the past two years there. Delish! That said, I think eating on the lighter side is helpful during the tournament. Lethargy via food coma does not improve play.

Where do you get those Steak sandwiches? Pm me if needed.

I would recommend checking this place out. Only about a half hour away and lots of rare older games and vids.

If you are referring to the one with fries and slaw that is Primanti's.

If you want a great cheese steak hoagie I recommend Peppi's.

If you like gyro's this place is great as well:

All have a location within waking distance of the convention center.

Are any of these restaurants within walking distance of the convention center?

I've been eating at a bar called Crystal on Penn Avenue.
    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g53449-d628188-Reviews-Crystal-Pittsburgh_Pennsylvania.html

I can't remember the names of the other restaurants I ate at last year. I just remember an Italian restaurant further down Penn Ave not within walking distance.

And they have food service at the convention center but be advised it's stuff like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers and fries.

Like others have commented, the convention center beer line (near the entrance) usually people buy 2 beers at a time cuz of the long line and they run out.

Also another plug for Pinball PA. They have arcade video games there you won't find anywhere else. And it's more like a 45 minute drive opposed to an hour.

    #63 2 years ago

Something else I took with last year that was great to have - a filtered water bottle. Fill it up anywhere.

It's my second year and I cannot wait to be back! Last year was ahhhmazing.

    #65 2 years ago

Pinball PA (about 45min ride west of downtown) is the best thing you can do on arrival day (Wednesday). They have a video collection that would blow everyone's mind... having what seems like every notable, game, all the notable technologies, and even have a ton of EM based arcade games (and not just gun games!). On top of that, they have like 200+ pins.

    pinballpa (resized).jpg

It's worth forming a carpool and heading out. The pin collection isn't as standout compared to the full PAPA set and tournament conditions... but they do have games you won't see at PAPA. And the video collection is to DIE FOR.

I pooped my pants when I saw a Tazz-Mania there on my first visit two years ago.

On behalf of all Pittsburgh pinsiders, we ask that you do not patronize this location. You are putting money into the hands of an individual who has wronged far too many here and is indebted way too much $$$ to a number of people caught on the wrong end of that sleeze. Yes the collection is wonderful, but there are many other places in this city with caring, responsible owners far more worthy of your dollar.

Good to see you speak for everyone! I don't know all the ins-and-outs of the spats with Ed and other locals, but I've not heard a single case that actually involved anyone getting cheated or shorted/etc. I hear more soap opera than anything else.

I always had good dealings with Ed and if anything they were some of the smoothest transactions I ever had. While there are other places to play most have just a few games and none of them have a large variety besides Kickback which is temporarily closed. Besides PAPA and Pinburgh I always felt Pittsburgh was pretty weak when it comes to having public places to play with a large selection so it's nice to be able to go to somewhere like PinballPA and play a few hundred games for a flat rate.

Someone asked what to do prior to these events and if you feel it's out of line suggesting a place with over 400 games then maybe you can go back and ignore anyone who asked questions not regarding Replay or FX. Typical Pinside, you give advise and help to those who asked questions and the minute someone doesn't like it they throw the lets stay on topic comment in your face like every other thread never deviates.

The fact there has been little to no talk leading up to the event tells you all you need with regards to Pinsiders and these events. The same thing happened earlier in the year when there was crickets leading up to PAPA. People would rather talk about adding mods and bling or complaining about every new game released.

sorry, as I asked the question...

However, I value knowing both the available options and if there is some sort of issue with supporting a local place. If someone really was screwing over people then I prefer to hear about it and feel it is directly on topic. Lots of people coming in to Replay with $$$ to spend so might as well provide the valuable info and specifics to back it up if people should avoid certain spots.

This thread shouldn't contain a page of drama about Pinball PA. If you are curious about the drama and want to discuss it, start a new thread.

If it was up to me, threads wouldn't deviate so much. Im going to assume this is part of the reason there isn't an official thread and why so many of the papa folks have abandoned pinside. You start a general information thread about replayfx / pinburgh and people have to polute with off topic drama.

you are the ONLY off topic poster in here. Just give it a break and the rest of us can get back to discussing fun things to do associated with our trips to Replay.

Anyone have a MUST eat sandwich shop? I love a nice italian beef dip sandwich.

Also, any great and trustworthy gluten free recs? Wife is a celiac so would be cool to take her to whatever is the best GF place in the area.

    #77 2 years ago

Best sandwich places are Primanti Brothers and Peppi's. It's been awhile since I've lived there though.

Good luck with GF. I just can't image a traditional Pittsburgh meal without gluten.

There is an official thread posted by Doug and it's been idle for 6 months.

    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinburgh-2016-tickets-on-sale-december-3rd

Doug posted a game for sale recently so I wouldn't say they abandoned Pinside. And if they don't post anymore cause of the drama then it's sad because plenty of others deal with it.

Kickback actually reopened today if I am correct.

How odd that Doug said 2016, not 2017. It didn't come up on search when I was checking for an official thread for this year because of that.

Ah rats, my flight only gets in after 5. Thanks for running that down though! Appreciate it.

I'm still undecided on going this year - I'm still waitlisted for Pinburgh, and while I've heard that almost anyone who showed up got in last year, it sounds like things might be tighter this year. Does anyone know anything about that? And if I don't get in to the tournament, will I still be entertained for four days?

    #87 2 years ago

The last two years i went everyone who was on the waiting list that showed up was able to enter. This year they've also increased the participant count to 800 from 740.

There are a lot of things to do at the ReplayFX show but without Pinburgh I couldn't be entertained for 4 days just by it. I could stand 2 days but im not that sociable so the mileage will vary. Between ReplayfX and Pittsburgh i could be entertained 4 days though.

Basically, they stop notifying people on the wait list at a certain point before the show, because it's too close for most people to change plans and make it. Anybody that is AT the show on the first morning and IS on the waitlist gets priority for open spots due to no-shows -- at least, that's what I was told last year when I did the "show up and hope" move. I put myself on the bottom of the wait list per Bowen's suggestion and then registered with the tournament desk morning of and paid the fee to get in. They took everyone that was there and wanted to jump in and were still short of the 750(?).

However, now that more people know that's a thing, it may not be as easy this year. So don't take this as a promise or anything.

You may not be entertained by ReplayFX for a full four days if not in Pinburgh. Lucky for you there are many things to do near by to occupy time. Places like KennyWood, Museums, and the downtown area by the venue has loads of great things to do. Rent kayaks, bicycles, etc....

Do you know if where you are listed on the waitlist matters? Does the tournament desk check to see how far down you are before verifying if you can grab an open spot? How early did you show up on the first morning to register? Sorry for all the questions, I am in the same spot as justanottergirl and it's my first Pinburgh.

Im sure you could find a couple days of entertainment, and then plan a small road trip on the way back if you arent in the rest of the days...

Position did not matter - just "on the waitlist" was all (I got on the waitlist the day I left to go, so I was #141 or so). A little after the hall was opened for the morning, but before the tournament started, they were taking additional signups at the main tournament desk. They did ask if I was on the waitlist. I'm not sure if they added any players who were there and NOT on the waitlist last year or not.

There's always a good number of no-call no-shows. If you've got the time available and want to play, go for it. I did last year, and I'm really glad I did.

So I was wondering how sign-in happens?

I was told by competitors from prior years you can sign in the night before (Wed. 26th) to avoid the morning crowds; but I can't seem to find the proper info on the Pinburgh website.

Anybody here who can shed light on this? It would be greatly appreciated.

Also, who else is staying at the Omni? I know a handful of my fellow Canadians are.

The early registration is at a desk in the Westin Lobby (to the left inside the main entrance) at 7pm (not sure how long they stay). Other than that there's registration in the lobby in front of the hall the morning of.

Edit: At least, the first 2 years at the convention center, this is where it is.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'm pretty far down on the waitlist, but I also already have the time off and a cheap place to stay, so I will probably at least come for the first couple of days and hope I get in.

    DO IT

    #97 2 years ago

Thanks everybody. I am in the same boat justanottergirl! I am far down the waitlist but still plan to go all 4 days. Worst case scenario, I'll only get to play in the Intergalatic tournament with 2 extra days of practice before!

    #98 2 years ago

I was all set to post some tips for using the pinburgh scoring site with your phone (from previous years experience) but then I realized that they might use the "PAPA Scoring" app that debuted at PAPA 20 instead and it would all be pointless.

    #100 2 years ago

    All will be revealed...

Beyond knowing HOW you are getting there, WHERE you are staying, and for how long.... no need to sweat anything at this point

I tell people travel on Wednesday. Be prepared for a stamina battle if you've never done this before. Visit other regional pin spots on Wednesday. Study downtown Pittsburg for your favorite types of eats/drinks.
