Working on Gottlieb Solar City. I have replays set at 72K and 84K, but the machine awards credits at 33 and 44K.

I’m not sure where to look at. I think I have the selector pins in the right place.

Thanks for the guidance

Does it do that for both players?

Mark -

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking the same thing. I will check this afternoon to see if player 2 does the same thing and report back. Thanks

Perhaps the decagon wipers are installed incorrectly?

OK - Finally got to the machine. Player 2 works correctly, so I assume I have issues with the player one score reels. Is there a trick to getting them oriented properly? Should I concentrate only on the 10K reel?

I've rebuilt them in the past and don't remember an issue like this.

Thanks

The wiper that sits between the score reel and contact board is usually keyed. The key in the score reel and corresponding notch in the wiper are tiny and easy to overlook.

Compare the orientation of the wiper pieces to the player 2 score reels and make sure they are oriented in the same way.

IIRC, I think the long rectangular part of the wiper should end up pointed between the 0 and the 9 on the reel.

Here is a pic of a score reel showing the wiper arm alignment.

For anyone who hasn't noticed how the wiper is keyed to the score reel:

The wiper has a notch that fits around a tiny nub between two of the larger teeth.

Thanks for the pics. I did not rebuild or even clean these score reels - when I powered up the machine, they reset to zero, so I figured why bother. I'll take them apart (Might as well clean them, too!) and verify they are re-assembled correctly.

I'll have to ponder why they reset to zero if the wiper is out of place, but that's for another day.

The zero position switches used by the reset circuitry are mounted above and behind the score reel and are activated buy a cam follower on the score reel itself. So there's no way for those to get out of sync with the score reel. The wiper between the score reel and contact board is only used by the high score circuit (or match circuit on the 10 score reel).

You were correct. Whoever cleaned the score reels installed the wiper incorrectly on the 10K reel.

Also, I had to spend a lot of time cleaning all 8 reels because whoever cleaned them decided to lubricate them with graphite. What a black mess. I don’t know who did work for the guy I bought the machine from, but I hope I don’t find any more of them. What is strange is that only the score reels were lubricated. Pops, slingshots, steppers were clean.

Bill, Glad you got it working properly.

I once picked up a Williams EM from a fellow in PA that was flipping it and found some prior owner had "lubricated" all the score reels with some red fluid that had solidified into something akin to the red coating on a candy apple. I had to completely disassemble each reel and soak the parts overnight in a citrus-based solvent and then scrub them thoroughly with a toothbrush. Thankfully, it was only a single player, but it was still a piece of work.
