I'm just an impressed bystander on this thread which is such a cool idea and whilst beyond me to offer contribution is great to follow along and read about.

When I ran into performance limitations on a Nano for a WMS display replacement I started looking at ESP32-S2 boards. Cheaper than Teensy and much faster than Nano. It's being / has been implemented into the Arduino IDE so might be worth a look and suits your price point.
