Hello All,
It's about time for me to buck up and change the troublesome 40 pin interconnect on my Flash. I wanted to order the parts from Ed (Great Plains) but he's closed until after the new years and I need to get this done before then so I'm shopping Mouser.
I've selected the bottom entry molex headers (Mouser #:538-09-48-3104 Molex #09-48-3104) and the header pins (Mouser #: 538-26-48-1101 Molex# 26-48-1101) but the pins on the headers aren't the special extra long mating length (16mm) Ed offers. Will I have problems with the standard pin molex length? Are they too short for this application?
Any help would be appreciated as I really only want to do this once
Cheers,
Art.

Before GPE had the special long pins, the shorter pins were used for this application. I didn't have any problems using the shorter pins. But the connection needs to be driverboard flush to the MPU board. The longer pins were recently added to his inventory -- well relatively recently.

The square short pins will grip the female counter part substantially better then the longer round pin.

About 95% of the time, only the female side of the 40 pin really needs to be replaced.

Of course if your males are green with corrosion then you need to do those too, but normally I replace the females and simply resolder the males.

I've done it with the shorter (standard for say WPC) headers. They are barely long enough. Sometimes I've removed the "sill" that the MPU sits on to ensure a good flush mount between MPU and driver board.

I don't like doing that, but in a pinch...

As noted, you can get by with the old male headers sometimes. If I have the correct part, I always replace them. If not, I remove all the old solder, and reflow new solder. Sometimes the pins can be pressed into the board further for a stronger solder joint. Why WMS cut so far into the solder meniscus I do not know.

Right on, thanks everyone. I'll order the "standard" length male pins from Mouser but maybe hold off on installing them until I see how the game reacts to the new female connectors.

Can someone confirm these bottom entry molex headers (Mouser #:538-09-48-3104 Molex #09-48-3104) are the correct ones? I've definitely been spoiled by all the kits our vendors sell..

Thanks,
Art.

Art,

I have an extra set of the extra long male headers for the MPU board from a recent GPE order.

If you send me your address, I'd be glad to send them to you as a gift, just pay it forward when you can.

I don't have a set of the female headers for the driver board, I used them on a customer's board.

Let me know.

John, that is a mighty fine offer and I would love to take you up on that! And pay it forward I will, thank you! I'll PM you my address shortly. Your generosity caps off what has been a great Pin Xmas! Last night we opened the door to our collection for friends and family. My retired parents were in town and spent 6 hours playing games side by side! This is only the second time they've played pinball in their life and my dad managed to get on the high score board TWICE (Sure Shot and Dragon.) We had dozens of people stopping by throughout the night with their visiting families and more than a few kids discovered the magic of pinball last night. And Flash died. But we can fix that now! Thank you!

Chris, thank you for the proper link, those are safely in my shopping cart now, I can't believe the price difference between Mouser and Great Plains! ($2.71 Mouser vs $1.00 GPE) Ed really does give us a great price, doesn't he?

Thanks again, everyone!

I had a few come through the shop with the short pins on them. Only works if things lined up perfect, there is very little room for error. Stick with the long ones.
