Are you sure the diode is not backwards? It will create a short then.

Looks correct. According to schematic, on right flipper the blue/yellow should go to banded side of diode. On left flipper the gray/yellow.

I don't have any experience on Stern games, so can't offer more help. Maybe you could try removing the suggested capacitors.
