Repair Sega stand up targets?

Working on a SST and one of the large blue stand ups is flaky. They are pricey at $15 but wanted to see if they are fixable. Looks like you could get inside the plastic base and investigate. Anyone try this or is it usually something broken off inside and better just to get a new one.

I know you can take them apart and there is a little circuit board in there with a microswitch. But I've usually just replaced them because the tops are broken. Won't hurt to try though.
