From pinwiki:

Transistor S6 controls the right thumper bumper and is driven from IC Q203 pin 7.

I don't have any experience with the Series 1 Bally home models. My experience is with series 2 Captain Fantastic.

I think you want the transistor at location "C1" on the game board. It can be any one of the following PNP transistor types: TIP145, SE9400, 2N6040.

Sounds like the wiring to the coil is connected incorrectly to the diode on the coil. This will destroy the diode and the driver transistor.

Type 1N4004 or 1N4007 would be fine across the coil.
