Would like to get some tips from someone who has removed the decals from a newer Stern game. I am replacing the decals on my BM 66 Premium with SLE decals and want to know the best method to remove the originals. I have restored B/W cabs including repainting them and installing new decals. Thinking the Stern decals may come off a lot easier with heat or just pulling versus having to sand or use a Festool. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Haha I will. This was just a quick test before we went to dinner. I am going to remove the head, playfield, and do it right.

Good news is they are coming off easily.

No shock there.

Rumor has it that if you look at Stern decals the wrong way they will melt right off of the cabinet.

You aren’t far off. Usually takes a little bit with the heat gun to start seeing bubbling on B/W games. A little heat on these Premium decals and it blisters immediately.

I just want to know what nobody else has asked..

How the frig did you get ahold of SLE decals? Did a certain someone pull a favor from Ritchie? =Þ

Different process. They were screen printed prior to assembly onto the individual cabinet pieces with BW. The white material you see on BW cabs when you apply a heat gun to the artwork isn't glue but the substrate used for image application so it isn't directly printed onto the wood.

Stern at the other end of the spectrum are quite literally decals applied on the line by the workers to an assembled cab. A bit of spray to the backing and slap it on - 5 -10 minutes tops.

Talking more MB or CC or any other B/W games with actual decals. These Stern decals also seem quite a bit thinner than a lot of other restoration decal sets as well. Should have clarified that a bit.

Finished! From what I can tell Stern did not use bolts that were exposed outside the cabinet to secure the slide and pivot rails. I am going to buy some shorter fatter screws to secure them before putting the playfield back in. But overall this went easier than most pinball projects and if anyone tries anything similar feel free to reach out. Key is getting the original decals as hot as possible without tearing them so all the adhesive comes off with them.
