So this game we just picked up has some green paint that was put directly over the original art on the front, right side, and the riser. I want it gone. The original art is still there right under it. I sanded off a bit to see if there was any primer or anything between this green crap and the original and there isnt. Doesnt even look like they sanded the original art, just brushed it on right over it. I am willing to bet it is latex paint to boot based on te way it sands off. Is there something I can do to get it off without jacking up the orignal paint real bad or is sandingvery carefully
The only viable option if I want to try and preserve the original paint as much as possible?

*Edit*

So we did end up buying a bottle of the Motsenbockers, 8 bucks at home depot, and we used about 3/4ths of the bottle doing the right side of the cabinet. We still need to do the coin door, the right side of the head and the front of the riser. Might have to buy one more bottle, but definitely a worthy project for 16 bucks and some sweat equity.

Check THIS out...

Worth a shot.. sounds good to me. I have a putty knife already from doing side rails.

Well, it's definitely latex. Was able to remove some of it with just rubbing alcohol and the underlying paint is left intact no problem. It will take FOREVER and a crapton of rags, so I'm still going to try some other things, like the goof-off to speed it up, then use the alcohol to finish the little fiddly bits like the coin door.

Bump....check out the results above!

Quoted from Purpledrilmonkey:

Dumb question - why was this painted over in the first place? The cab doesn't look like it's in such shape that would make me think about painting anything, let alone just covering everything with green...
Impressive results though.

No idea why...

Bought Naptha to clean off all the rest of the scudge and get rid of the paint thinner, but also have alcohol on hand if it does anything funky in a test spot.

I don't see any damage on what we've uncovered. It's just planked a little. Tiny flakes missing here or there but it's not chipping off, it's where it's been dinged by something/someone.

Here's the front and the head side.

Thanks for all the comments. This is my first time removing paint like this.. short of the chemical burns that have cracked up my fingertips (My wife used gloves, I didn't....just as well, we didn't have enough.) it wasn't that bad. The only thing I would suggest to anyone trying to do this is to actually place it so the side you are working on is flat. The stuff I used is like water consistency....it doesn't stay where you spray it, it just runs down the cabinet. Would work a lot better if it could just sit on the paint for 20-30 seconds..it's not super-uber-solvent like Goof-off, it needs a little time to work.....but work it does.

Quoted from lladnip:

if you ever decide to paint it green again, you buy the paint and beer and i will be right over-

LOL. That would be hilarious if the person that did it actually posted here.

I do have the guy's email I bought it from...told him when I bought it I would strip it down...I didn't try and haggle the price at all....boards were already rebuilt, plays good, playfield is nice, plastics are nice, and the cabinet....well.....I had a feeling it was salvgeable.

I think if I take this to TPF, I'm gonna have to put something on the apron or backglass that has these pics on it, LOL.

ya kinda like a protective clear, (only green).

That's it, I'm brushing opaque latex paint on all my playfields!
