will you need to remove the braiding for this repair?

If you are using a heat gun or or heat source the electronics need to be protected or removed. Overspraying the interior with paint might require taking the guts out of the cab. That said, are there enough electronics in a modern pin backbox to be worried about or can it be re-decaled without an issue?

No it's easy enough to take everything out of an EM. Might have to pull a few staples.

See Vid's Guide for removing side rails, that is probably the toughest part.

no its easy to get the motor board out of an em, also easy to take off the door and associated harness. easy to take out the components from the head and then have two empty wood boxes. Only "tricky" thing is if you want to remove the metal rails for the repaint.

easier if you have the equipment to make accurate cuts and compound angle joints.

since modern glues are a lot better, usually people keep the joinery simple and it's strong enough, so they don't make the cabinet the same way and only the dimensions matter.

if your current cabinet is too far gone to repair, I'd consider trying to find another cabinet from a parts machine that's in better shape and start with that. Making a cabinet from plywood sheets is only economical if the labor is free and you already have the needed equipment.

typically the only cabinet that can't be repaired is rot / termite damage or massive delamination of the plywood layers - or swollen/moldy particle board if the cabinet used that.

I can (and so can you) completely gut and empty out a Williams or Bally EM in under 15 minutes, and that includes removing the back bars, flippers mech’s & coin door. Gottlieb’s are a big “PITA”, but it can be done.

This only applies to Gottlieb EM’s. I can remove the bottom board in a Williams in less than 3 minutes.

This is simple. If you are repainting a cab and you don't empty it out AND take off the rails you're doing it wrong.

I gut all my cabinets. Quicker, and a nicer job, than masking stuff up instead.

Take lots of pictures so you can put it back together more easier

Especially with white cabs, the new spray inside, all around and down below, brightens up everything, makes missing parts easier to find, and makes working inside a lot easier on the eyes.
