Relocating slingshot posts / factory errors?

One possible solution would be to fill the old holes with cut dowel rods, use wood glue to firmly lock them in place, then drill new holes once the glue is dry. The added wood material would hopefully help avoid the drill bit forcing its way back to the old hole during the process, and you could smooth and repaint the dowelled area when done.
