DATA EAST - STAR WARS SCHEMATICS.pdf (PDF preview)

#1 4 years ago

i am having problems with what i believe is a relay problem on my Data East star wars. Basically i cant get any of the coils to fire(the special coils that do not use the relay do work, and the flashers work) I have the same problem even though i used a different MPU board so i Know the problem has to be on the power board. Also i replaced the Relay and am still having the same issue. I created a video to show the problem hoping someone can help me figure out what to troubleshoot here. i also included the schematic. What i didnt include in the video is if after hooking up the J6 connector i ground the other end of the relay, nothing happens.

Does the black-red wire to the mpu have connection at CN12-2?
Check the pin in the Molex housing....
Also check the pin in the Molex housing at the PPB side.
Are they IDC connectors?

It does and i have checked those connections, to try an isolate the problem, in the video i have all the other connectors disconnected except J6, and if i ground the other side of the relay when J6 is connected, nothing happens. if i disconnect J6 and directly apply voltage to one side of the relay and ground the other one, the relay clicks.
when i measure the voltage at either side of the relay i get 34 volts if J6 is connected, which to me would mean that somehow current is leaking from one side of the relay around to the other side?

yes they are idc connectors

A relay does not leak, it's just a wire wound coil.
If you put a voltage on one side of the wire, it will also be on the other side (as long as there is no ground connection).

Are you sure there is connection between J6-6 & 7?
With J6 connected you should get voltage at J6-9 (through the relay coil).
When you ground J6-9 the relay should energize.

What you show in the video is normal behaviour, as there is no ground the energize the coil in Game Over situation.
The relay only energizes when needed and in Game Over it is not needed.
With J6 connected, tap the metal plate of Q29 on the CPU.
That should energize the relay, thus making ground to J6-9 via Q29.

ok realized that the relay was automatically closing everytime i hooked up the CN12 connector pulled the board and the TIP 122 was bad, plugged everything back up and now have only 2 coils not working. I am guessing those TIP connectors went bad as well. anything else i should check?

What is not working right now?

Actually just had 2 wires that had come desoldered. so everything is working except on the flashers, it says i have 4 playfield flashers on 8r. i can only see 3, (2 right above the landspeeder on the left of the playfield and 1 in the top left corner. not sure where the 4th one is?

3 on the playfield and 1 on the insert....
