Quoted from steve45:

New version of the RasPiSound hardware is now also available ...
completely assembled (only USB card, speaker cables to add):
http://go-dmd.de/produkt/komplett-set-raspberry-pinball-sound-v1-9/
or as a kit for self assembling / soldering:
http://go-dmd.de/produkt/kit-v1-9-fuer-raspberry-pinball-sound-projekt/
Note: the kit offering actually only contains pictures of the assembled PCB. But you still need to build it!! I will update the pictures ASAP.
Thx Steve

Steve -

Does this work for any WPC game? Or just WPC89 ? I am curious if it could be used in a WPC95 game to replace the A/V board?

Sigh... another project for me

Quoted from steve45:

In the meantime the new firmware version 1.14 is out. Changes since the last official version 1.9 can be found here: https://go-dmd.de/changelog/#raspinsound
- support for older data east
- announcement of mode
- improved WPC mode, handling of 0x6x cmds
- bugfix in volume handling (ducking vs. jingle)
- fixed handling of rotary encoder for data east
- added output enable for latest pcb rev.
- shaker support config: active high or low
Shaker support is also tested with my HS2 machine, although I cannot provide a demo video for now, because the DIY shaker pulls so much power from the PSA, that the pi resets itself.
But this is really because the DIY shaker motor has so much power, that you couldn't really drive it with 12V.
To get the update use for Pi Zero: https://mega.nz/#!Y1xTFawK!BzLso-bGi80w20yzrtRdktnMlAyz0CZmMHuGt3ZRgSI
and for Pi3: https://mega.nz/#!h54DnSwI!PPiU-A65SQA8mKaX7d4rwM5IhQ1p46SeWDd8lqRwyR8
To install the update rename the zip file into update.zip and copy it to the update folder on the sd card. Then restart the system.
The full images you can download in the shop are also updated to lastest 1.14 version,
Next thing to test / to develop is a serial link to another pi that is capable of playing video, based on sound commands coming from RasPiSound.
Playing part is ready to use: its just a simple python script https://github.com/sker65/serial-media-srv
The idea is to have a display in the apron or somewhere on the playfield or a replacement for creature holo.
/Steve

I just re-read this, and this stuck out:

“Next thing to test / to develop is a serial link to another pi that is capable of playing video, based on sound commands coming from RasPiSound.”

WHAAAAAT !! that will be awesome

#109 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

There is already a prototype for the player part. It's a simple python script that uses the omxplayer for playback of video and jpgs.
Script can be found here https://github.com/sker65/serial-media-srv
It is controlled by serial commands and plays just files by number.
Next thing to add is a serial.txt control file along with a sound effect, that defines the serial cmds to be emitted by RasPiSound.
I hope I can include that in the next release and provide a demo on how to use it.
/Steve

I am so going to use this! I just built a huge wall of LEDs that my band uses in performing live - we trigger using an iPhone app called TouchOSC which plays videos on a pi using omxplayer attached to each of the 4 quadrants in the Wall. It’s a pain to sync but it looks incredible. It’s 10 ft x 6ft (about 3m x 2k I think). We need a way to sync sound fx to it as well ... working on that next

Quoted from steve45:

Enjoy! Always nice to see somebody can do something useful with my free time stuff. Even if it's not really about pinball in this case
/Steve

Well I won’t steal your code necessarily, more like a parallel effort

Quoted from lucky1:

... and/or pin2dmd

I’d love to
Integrate pin2dmd, but I can never figure out how to get that interface board

#118 5 years ago
Quoted from lucky1:

Contact dpannell . He has some spare AFAIK.

Thanks lucky1!

Quoted from fly:

I have a few sets of "raspisound" and I can not cope with DCS machines, for example in RoadShow the sounds overlap, are played back at the wrong moment, do not interrupt after completing the mission, etc. :/

I am testing this board on a Scared Stiff soon, will post some feedback! This is just such a cool project

#125 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

Regarding 1: depends on the pi you're gonna use pi0 USB sound card is a must, Pi3 has buildin sound.
Regarding 2: license goes on top, but without shipping, it's just a license file. You need to order it separately because it depends on pi's serial.
Regarding BTTF: should work as it works very well in my JP, which is basically the same hardware.
Hope this answers your questions.
/Steve

Thanks for the reminder Steve - I need to order a USB DAC

#129 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

To add to this: as most USB dacs are connector type A you also need an adapter from USB micro male to USB type A female

TY!

#130 5 years ago
Quoted from Lonzo:

So I can go ahead and order the board and just come back when my Pi comes in?
Is there a tutorial anywhere for pulling the sounds out of a game that has not been done yet? I have a Pinsound in my JP and it’s easy to change the sounds but I don’t know where to start from scratch.
Thanks for the response.

I believe Steve has suggested in the past to download game sounds from the pinsound community

#139 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

See here: http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/?page_id=223
There is also at least one thread on pinside about recording sounds for pinsound just use the search. https://www.google.de/search?q=pinside+rip+music

Just clarifying - I believe you can use PinSound Studio to rip sounds from a ROM even if you do not have the game.

#143 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

Today a build a first working demo that shows RasPiSound controlling a secondary pi that shows movies or still images based on the sound effect that is being played.

Its really simple to handle, just put a serial.txt file in the sound effect directory with a sequence of bytes in it and everytime the effect gets played, the serial port emits these bytes as command to the secondary pi.
The service running on the secondary pi listens to these commands and plays / shows movies or images. Command bytes are translated to numbers that then map to files names that will be played.
So its easy to setup. Could be used as a mod by integrating the small screen in the apron or to replace the creature holo.
/Steve

Fantastic! I am totally doing this this upcoming weekend!

Steve how do the Pis talk to one another? Do you have an additional cable running from the GPIO?

#145 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

Communication is done via UART devices. Easiest is using the buildin UART that is exposed on gpio headers and also exposed on the RasPiSound shield.
As long as it is unidirectional you basically need two wires: Gnd <-> Gnd and TX <-> RX.
Default comm params are 57600 8N1, but you can configure it.
I will also prepare a demo with two PIs that shows the wiring from the shield to the secondary pi.
/Steve

Got it, pins 8 and 10 GPIO (and 6 I guess for GND), very good idea!

Steve ships fast after he has all your parts. I got mine in only a few days, and I STILL havent had time to install it. I have everything built, just need to load the sounds and install the license.

#154 5 years ago
Quoted from Bd700:

Order arrived. Thanks Steve. Couple of questions. Looks like one of the volume knobs was mounted on the wrong side of the circuit board from the factory. Are both amps suppose to be the same? Also do I need to have Linux installed on sd card partition before installing RasPiSound image that I downloaded?
[quoted image]

You will have to fix that potentiometer, that’s a bummer. They should be identical.

And no just image your SDCard with the raspisound image using Etcher or something. You do not need to do anything additional

#158 5 years ago
Quoted from Bd700:

That’s what figured. Thanks so much!

Are those soldered? Mine came unassembled, are you sure they’re really stuck together? Just figured I’d ask

#160 5 years ago
Quoted from Bd700:

Yep, they were soldered on in individually sealed packages.

Dang. Sorry man

#177 5 years ago
Quoted from Wharhed:

I get that it will continue to announce the serial number and say demo mode, but I didn't think I was required to have the license loaded to have the sound files function. Also, when I went through his documentation post, it said numbers, but either way is fine for me. In the log below, it looks like it found the files and the config.raspisnd.
Steve - One thing, I'm using a USB soundbar at the moment as my USB sound card seems to have walked away :/. Also, I snagged the log (below). Is there anything you can see any obvious errors that would affect this?

Ok dude let’s use Pastebin next time for a huge post like that!

Quoted from Wharhed:

Only big on a mobile phone .. Anyhow, I've moved the log output to pastebin.

Lol it was not! Haha. Pastebin is a lot easier to manage - post the url too so Steve can check it out

How are you guys connecting the speakers? I haven’t gotten mine installed yet and I want it to be reversible; what do you suggest instead of cutting wires? I guess I could jumper the connectors..

Quoted from Lonzo:

I am about ready to give up on this project and I haven’t even got started yet.
Are there any pictures of the 2.1x board put together? It doesn’t seem like it would be that hard to put some pictures in the assembly section.
The documentation is all over the place. So hard to find and when you find it the numbering is so confusing you don’t know what to make of it. I load the image that’s on the shopping g site and my Pi says it’s running version 1.14. But there is documentation about 1.9 etc. makes no sense. Even simple stuff like where to put some of the files is not clear. A buddy of mine couldn’t get his USB to work so I told him to put the USB text file every folder and gues what, it worked.
Seriously....Surface mount chips? Most people don’t work with that. I’ve been doing all my own board work for several years but I’ve never had to do that. Can this be made with standard “through hole” chips? This would make it much easier for the non professionals with standard equipment.
Was really excited but to work on this but to see the frustration my buddy is going through and the lack of a single document that explains all this is stealing my excitement.
I think this could be a huge success if done right.
Has anyone but Steve got this to function?

If you’re ready to give up on something that’s still being actively worked on and figured out, maybe it’s not for you. This isn’t a commercial product with 1,000s of hours of work put in, we are basically helping to test so Steve can make changes and get it working better. It’s not like he’s making money on this project

Quoted from Wharhed:

Here’s a few pics of mine as I put it together. Don't mind the extra solder paste, there was a clog and it exploded lol. I ended up cleaning it up and reapplying a thin bead.

FYI guys, IJ is a REALLY hard game to get working on the PinSound board as well, especially with the Endprodukt mix. That mix has hundreds of sound files which must be loaded, and has multiple speech files for most of the callouts. It is a super resource intensive mix, and IJ does a lot of layering of sounds, further multiplying.

What I’m saying is, that is probably the most difficult mix to get right. It is absolutely imperative that you have the fastest available USB drive holding the Files. Buy one of those ones on Amazon or such that is listed as “fastest 2018” because otherwise you will have the problems you are describing, even on a pinsound

I had an IJ for a year and finally got it working consistently by doing this. A corner store-bought drive will not suffice. I believe they are about $20

Quoted from BENETNATH:

Hi, you mean the sd card, right?
I shared with Steve that i thought it might be the bottleneck, and i purchased a new one, can you give me the ref you are using ?
thanks

Yep sorry, usb in pinsound. SDCard here

#262 5 years ago
Quoted from Phantasize:

I don't think the SD card is the bottleneck, as I always use the preload option. That means that all of the sounds are copied to the RAM of my Pi3 as I understand it.

I’m not sure how the preload works exactly, but the IJ mix is 1.5 GB, and I believe the Pi3 only has 1GB of RAM, so it is still swapping

#265 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

One comment on preload: it's only the sound effects (jingle, single, sfx, voice) that get's preloaded not the background music. So even if a sound set in over 1GB on disk in total, this does not mean everything gets loaded in memory.
Also preloading means that SDL library, which is used for sounds under the hood, "loads" the sound effect from file in its internal representation. The exact memory consumption is visible in the logfile.
So loading the IJ Remix by Endprodukt consumes 188MB (debug run on my MacBook) as you can see:

in different stores: ebay, aliexpress, etc.
only that when I recorded the image 1.15, the program started.
I thought it was due to bad card formatting, yesterday I bought one more 16gb new (kingstone) and the same.
on the 32gb card, running from the console, the program is loading, but it does not playing sounds, as I press "p", there is "DEBUG" on all sounds, and there is silence.

If you are planning on installing an sdcard to a Raspberry Pi, it needs to be a high quality card. Spend $20 and get a Kingmax or Samsung, PNY, whatever brand. Those go through extensive QA, and will be less likely to get corrupted over time. A lot of the cheap cards have compression installed at the root level to make them look larger than they really are, and are SLOW. you may be running into this.

#385 5 years ago
Quoted from fly:

Kingston is also of good quality and does not work :/
but thank you for the answer, I will try again with the cards you mentioned.

I know, it sucks - sometimes I have to try 2 or 3 cards for different things. I am working on a SmartDMD color replacement and now need to buy another SDCard because my Pi won't read the one I used.

Quoted from BENETNATH:

Hello Guys,
i took some time today to put this relay board and the raspinsound together.
The result is in video in the folder : https://photos.app.goo.gl/xXPRYjXLR9GjMDSp8 (5min38 video, my blanket survived !)
For non-video people, the bottom line is that it works perfectly.
I had to put the invert function of the shaker, and connect it to the NC plot, to avoid shaker activation during the pi booting.
i pasted a shaker.txt file in the sfx subfolder activated when launching the ball, and it worked every time the sfx got played.
That's really great !
[quoted image]
Beware of the wiring, that's feasible like this only because i'm using a 5V power unit
Now, i need to add a LOT of shaking effects
But we need also to have some improvement on reliability of the sound played, especially for background music.
On Ball 1, i never have background music
No attract music too, just sounds when pushing buttons.
So that's nearly good but not perfect !

Still, this shaker solution is out BEFORE the Pinsound solution; and they have been working on this for 3 years!

Both lucky1 and Steve have made such huge contributions to the hobby, it's really incredible! Neither of them get the credit they deserve in doing the thankless research and foundation for all these projects that they *then* have to build something to get working. #510 5 years ago
Quoted from fishbone:

I went about it as follows:
- connect to RaspberryPi via SSH
- login as user "pi" password "raspberry"
- type "sudo -s" to gain root access
- type "dietpi-config"
- choose "Network Options: Adapters" to set SSID and WiFi password. Also make sure WiFi adapter is enabled
- choose "Save all changes and restart networking"

As long as you're using a recent Raspberry Pi build, you just SSH in and type:

"raspi-config"

Just a little typo above there.

#588 5 years ago

Are Data East Version 2 games supported by this or another solution? I don’t see them as supported by PinSound but wasn’t sure if that was an oversight. I’d like to upgrade the sound on a POTO but it looks like there are limited choices.

#591 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

The next version 1.25 is nearly finished. I need to wait for the release one to finish some tests and second to ensure the new name will be final.
The 1.25 has support for new sound pac formats, advanced sound editor functions, audio device switcher and support for 5.1 surround sound. For the latter I need to do a demo on a real machine, but this is quite time consuming.
Br Steve

Wow!

#594 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

First hardware demo installation of surround sound, but its hard to capture the real experience on a mobile phone video. For now I only used dolby demo tracks, just to see it basically running:

There's of course some steps left to do, update the installed RasPiSound in the getaway to the latest version and then add some cool 5.1 effects e.g. when the heli hits the tunnel, jackpock explosion or of course the supercharger. I tried audacity already and it works fine, you just need to create a 6 channel wav file.
Hope you like it.

Wild! How does it do 5.1 with only 3 speakers? Simulated?

Now post the new build!

Aah geez .. sorry this is even an issue Steve. Hopefully you get it worked out soon. Or dropped/ignored or whatever must happen

#605 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

Yes and yes, ... Seriously it will also work with older hardware but things are moving, so the actual plan is to go with an alternative sound format the VPin community created recently as alternative to play sounds from disk instead of emulated sounds.
This format will also be supported with version 1.25 and newer and I'm sure you will find sounds for your machine.
As soon as you have it running, send me a note.

What’s the new format? Please tell me it supports Data East Series 2!

#607 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

nothing special about specific machine types. Its just an super generic and easy to use way for handling sound packages for pinballs. The vpin guys invented it. Its based on a table structure, that defines all meta attributes in a row for each sound effect. Maybe I missed something but what is so special with Data East Series 2?

Nothing really - but it’s not supported by the guys from Western Western Europe, and I have a POTO i’d like to enhance..

#609 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

Okay I check the schmatics, this is a data east ver 2 mpu that has a slightly different interface to the mpu. That's different indeed to DE rev. 3. But I was talking of a sound format, that can be used which is independent of machine type and hardware interface.
I looks not that difficult to adapt though, but without having a machine at hand to test and measure, I really cannot say if RasPiSound will work or how much work it will be to adjust. You could use one of my old data east only pcbs and just try.
/Steve

Understood - thanks for the clarification!

#613 5 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

In one sentence: the Frenchmen don't like the fact that there is a competitor.
Even though I don't see my project as a direct competitive product. RasPiSound still requires some diy work and it's still lacking an easy to use documentation.
Capability wise it's indeed comparable and even have some unique features like the new ui and it's quite cheap.
Also they don't like the idea of somebody using sounds from their community website other than with their products. Even though all the good sound mixes are created by community guys and not them.
Nevertheless they decided to threaten me legally and we spent hours and lots of euros with law firms with only little or zero outcome so far. Its a shame spending money and time on that instead of improving the products.
Let's see where it will end.
One thing's for sure: the name will change.
RasPiSound from their perspective is to similar and could confuse customers.
New name will hopefully revealed soon, but anything else is still in discussion.

I hope this ends up working out - I understand the French brothers not wanting to see a competitor. But you are right - these are not similar at all. Plus the sound dumps can be created using M1, so I don't see that being an issue. Also, they do not own the sounds, so WTF.

I don't know how trademarks work in Europe, but in the US if there is marketplace confusion, the trademark owner is obligated to take action. On the other hand, you are basically just selling parts and some software you put together. I don't see how it is similar.

Too bad they have to do this, I own 4 PinSounds, and this puts a very bad taste in my mouth. Plus they have not delivered on several promised products AND keep raising prices. I can not DIY PinSound as much as this board, which is why I like it so much. Good luck Steve, this is obviously pretty much nonsense.

Quoted from kba78:

I guess I will hope I kit comes with more than just assembly instructions. As far as some of the programming, I am kinda lost. I have worked with raspbarry pi before (Dr pinball dmd extender). But never had to hook it up to WiFi.

DMD Extender doesn't work with wifi - I tried over and over again...

#689 4 years ago
Quoted from Phantasize:

I actually got wifi working now
My image must have been bad somehow, as i were never able to run dietpi-config. And it wasn't offered to me when logging in via SSH. But via help from Vimtoman and a new image i got it working
After that i tried downloading the small 1.24 image again for smaller SD cards, as that would be more ideal to me. And even though i think the windows partition in that image is broken somehow (it isn't readable in windows at all), it works and boots in the Pi. I then tried logging in again via SSH, and i was then presented with a "dietpi intro/menu" that told me i could run dietpi-config. So i entered "sudo dietpi-config", and the config script launched! And then it was only a matter of turning on wifi, selecting SSID and entering the correct password. And after removing the ethernet cable and rebooting, i now have WiFi!!
So only "problem" now is the non working windows partition in the small image (if there is supposed to be one?), but this isn't actually a problem, as the Pi reads all data (including update files) from the connected USB stick.
Now i just need to find out if i can actually change the host name to something like STTNG so that i don't have to remember the IP address when connecting.
Thank you to everyone who helped out. It really was extremely simple, one i wasn't working with a corrupt / faulty image. Something must have gone wrong when i tried making the 16gb small enough to fit my 16gb cards.

Great news that this is working!!

#703 4 years ago
Quoted from Phantasize:

Hi Stefan
I haven't got that exact combo, but i had similar issues on my Pi3 with 1.24. What ended up working for me was updating to the latest 1.25 RC, and then accessing the Web UI. From there i was able to select between a lot of different drivers for the USB sound card, and now it works like a charm. On previous versions i just had the use-usb.txt file.
So i would really suggest hooking up your Pi to the network to access the Web UI. But with all of the problems people have had with the DietPi WiFi setup, it seems that it would be best to start with a cabled connection, and from there SSH to the Pi and run DietPi-config.
I don't know the Pi Zero, but i bet it doesn't have an ethernet connector? And in that case, i actually don't know how you get WiFi working, as there seems to be an error in the DietPi software, that makes it impossible to setup WiFi by editing the txt files. I think steve45 mentioned looking into it , and perhaps come up with something easier. But he is a busy man, so that might take a while. And seeing as DietPi is a finished distribution he is using, it might not be that easy.
Don't suppose you have a ethernet to USB adapter that would allow you to make a cabled ethernet connection to your Pi Zero?

If you happen to have the power connector for the Google Chromecast which has an Ethernet jack built in, this works natively with the Pi Zero. It’s $15 (in the US) on Amazon.com

I took some time this afternoon to dig into that weird equalizer not running problem and finally found it. Damn the programmers of the ALSA sound system and especially there error handling!! If there is an arbitrary little piece wrong in the setup the driver (or plugin) simply crashes with no comment why.
In this case the equalizer plugin relying on the HOME environment var set when process executes, if not set then exits with a misleading error message and a "half open" device. In addition systemd on the one hand executes all services as root be default, but ONLY if you configure "User=root" it also sets HOME and USER environment vars. ARRGGHH!!

Awesome work, Steve! This is an interesting coincidence - I am programming the light and video show for an upcoming gig with my music group, and we use the Reaper audio workstation to control backing tracks and send commands to control the other hardware.. and it used Lua to do a lot of the custom interfaces! It is about controlling rgb light ring based on your soundset, features the latest firmware with some lua and arduino magic on top.
See youself:

Br Steve

very cool! Are these the standard pop bumper rings? They are only two wire, yes? And so not individually addressable

#924 4 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

Rings are with 16 x 2812 rgb LEDs each. They are individual addressable. You can easily change the Arduino sketch to create different effects.

NICE! I am expecting my package today, I can't wait to install it!

Me in HS2, FH and DrWho. And a couple of guys from the flippermarkt forum. CFTBL I know for sure. I myself did tests on IJ, STTNG, AttackFromMars, and a few more.
Maybe the impression is wrong as more people with problems posting.

I will Be shortly. Just received my new board - rev. G! As long as I don’t blow it on the really small surface mount components I should have it up and running this evening.

#939 4 years ago
Quoted from HerrBerzerk:

Would you do me a favor and try one thing. Unplug the ribbon cable from your display controller board and see if this brings any enhancement to your problem.

What change might this bring? Does the display introduce noise into the connection?

I have not had a chance to solder my new board together yet, but I am looking forward to it this weekend

#940 4 years ago

Also, I watched this video several times to get some good recommendations for soldering those surface mount components. The pins are SO small, it can be hard to see them, and even more difficult without a tiny solder gauge, and very very small tip. I also wasn't initially using flux, which seems absolutely critical.

Just an update, but too be honest I have not got a lot of faith left in getting this to work. What is annoying is steve45 has a video of it working in a Getaway yet when I asked for a pi image for Getaway I was told he could not provide an image for specific machines, there must be a reason for this ??
1. I updated to 1.29 got no sound at all checked all settings no go no sound.
2. Loaded 1.27 and do a sound test, sound is back, 50% sounds play correct then after a couple of minutes testing they all do not match, very random, interestingly the test selection tone (when you press the 4 Getaway buttons in the coin door) is always correct but it sometimes play another sfx along with it.
3. unplug DMD board no change.
4. updated to 1.28 no change
All sound sets 4 in all (links provided by steve45) do the same unreliable output.
I was going to test this in my Funhouse but I cannot be bothered until I get a replacement board for a rebuild

Something is wrong with your board. Are you sure the soldering is ok?

#950 4 years ago
Quoted from BrewNinja:

Ive posted it before, but this is what I see in my logs over and over and over on 3 different games and 2 different boards (I didn't change soundsets, so it triggers the same sound on all). This is from first boot. It plays constantly, even if there should be no sounds playing. Disconnect CPU and it doesn't play anything except the license info stuff that it should.

Did you try disconnecting the display instead? It definitely sounds like there’s a lot of noise that’s confusing the board. Definitely double check your soldering work - that’s a key area I had trouble with

#959 4 years ago
Quoted from nutty:

I use a LCD with a Pi Zero as a DMD so no high voltage, I believe colorDMD and PIN2DMD would use the display board as I am so the issue would probably remain.
I have wondered because I use a Pi to produce the DMD image that there may be a way to use the data straight from the bus to the pi and do without the controller.

There are multiple ways to power a Pin2DMD, you can power from HV off the board, or a separate power supply. My STTNG (where this Tilt board is going) has a Pin2DMD with an external power supply.

I’m also using a Pi-based display in my TZ so I can test a couple different configurations once I build my board this weekend

Quoted from Aetios:

Hi guys ,
I've received my kit for my Tales from the Crypt this noon... I ordered the PortExtender too but I don't have the IC
Then, I tried to install 1.25 on my raspberry Pi 3A (the one which doesnt have RJ45)... and it's very tricky to configure WIFI.
There is no "dietpi-wifi.txt" so I can't activate it at the first launch.
Of course, I tried to configure it by connecting me with SSH with the wifi as Hotspot but it seems that changing parameters in dietpi-config doesn't work too.
I can't find any exemple of this file on the web.
Any help will be welcome
Best regards

This took me a while to figure out too. But what I discovered was that I just needed to wait longer for the hotspot. Don’t bother with the dietpi changes

Quoted from nutty:

ok so I am basically stuck on the same old issues with my Getaway, this is my second board. Random playing sounds not all sounds in the correct place or triggering incorrectly.
I know this is diy but I have built other mods no issue, and looking through the forum I cannot see anyone claiming 100% success.
I have rebuild the board, changed ribbon cables, run from a dedicated PSU, run 1.25, 1.27, 1.28, 1.29.
I am going to try a different make faster sdcard and a different Pi3 and try and find my old L-2 rom chip to put back in if that does not work I am done with it.
Then off to Pinsound.

Doesn’t Steve have a working Getaway ? How could it possibly be so different I wonder

#988 4 years ago
Quoted from nutty:

Ok so last night I test metered all connections from the WPC connector to the 3 ICs and through to the Pi, I found pin1 of the 74LCX374 (READ_OC) not making contact with pin24 of the Pi.
Its not the board I think i have a bad solder joint on the IC so I will fix that today and try again later.

That's good news, report back when you can!

#990 4 years ago
Quoted from nutty:

Ok I have fixed the board connection I have now made sure the board is 100% no errors.
More of the sound FX now are triggered correct. On the Pinball Test menu about 50% are correct. The music is still triggered wrong but I believe it is now not random it is triggered from switches which are supposed to trigger sound FX in play, I still get the unwanted sound effect playing whenever it feels like it.
So its onto the soundsets they must be wrong in some way ??
I have not bought a licence yet so I get the interruption of the Pi serial number, I take it that all it is as in an interruption not totally miss timing the sounds ?

That would be my guess. Good news at least! The sound sets being scrambled/unscrambled is much easier than a hardware issue

#991 4 years ago

Hoping to get time to finish my board today- I am missing one of the small capacitors so hopefully I have one in my workshop somewhere

#995 4 years ago
Quoted from nutty:

Just an update, I have checked the hardware all working, new higher speed sdcard, I know my 1 soundset is ok and not scrambled.
Here is a log from the start of a game (Getaway)
'electric_touch_5' Still playing whenever it feels like
DEBUG SndServi [playSample] [sdl_sound.c:1393] playing sample 186:0 vol: 15->64 'sfx' 'electric_touch_5' on channel 0

WARN SndServi [handleSoundByTypeWithIdx] [sdl_sound.c:1470] sample for id '46' not found
This seems to very different to steve45 Getaway video so I am at a brick wall to go any further, some support on the log would be good.

If it’s trying to play IDs which do not exist, this implies to me maybe your sound set is scrambled - or at least needs to be reviewed. How do we confirm the IDs?

You should try joining the tilt!audio slack channel and posing your question there. Steve has a day job too!

Steve, I have a 1.3 data east for my LOTR.
I wanted to know how to connect it to the speakers as there are no amplifiers on the board.
Are you still on this project?

Doesn’t Whitestar require an interface for the sound chip because of how it was designed? I’ll let Steve confirm but I know it’s nit a straight forward connection like DE games are

Hello Folks. I am new and really lost. The website isn't really helpful on addressing my needs plus the 25% of the site is still in German even if I select English. I need a sound board for my data east TMNT. Do I buy the TILTAudio or Kit 1.9 for Raspberry Pinball Sound Project?
On the TILTAudio -
"The new board has an additional 3.5 jack , so you can use standard cable. Also has installed a DC converter from 12V to 5V" What?
With the TILTAudio, what is the difference between With/Without Amplifiers. Difference between power Supply Internally or external ? Nothing on the website explains this. Can someone help me out?

How much soldering experience do you have ?
Get a kit with amplifiers. External power supply is generally better for DE games

12V to 5V converter is for internal power, but as I mentioned you should use an external PS.

How much surface mount soldering experience do you have ?

Quoted from boy141:

Hi! Plenty of experience soddering transistors, header pins. zero experience on SMT but I do have flux AND a hot rework station. On another site, I've been reading posts where Steve hasn't fulfilled orders. Getting a bit worried here.

I think he's gotten a bit busy since he started a new job, but I've received 4 different orders from him pretty quickly, and not that long ago. So I wouldn't be *that* concerned. He's a little hit-and-miss to find him on here or on the slack channel, but he does respond. Also, the thieving french dudes have been harassing him with legal action without basis, so he may not be as quick to post here. you can always PM him.

Quoted from boy141:

Thank you for the reassurance. I just wished his FAQs were more helpful. So here's what I have down. I need an external power supply and a kit with amplifiers. So I am guessing TILT! Audio Kit with a new 2.5 board ? External power supply - is it 12v or 5volts? After this is all said and done, I will volunteer to write a FAQ for him. Some of the links take you to version 2.2 . Google is not his friend at all.

This is just a hobby thing - you do have to do a lot of your own research. Part of the deal. If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution, buy the Pinball Thieves Pinsound. $400 and the documentation is better.. but not much

#1020 4 years ago
Quoted from BENETNATH:

Calling them thieves seems a bit.. rude.
They developed a high quality product with a brand. I'd say that Steve was also playing a bit when calling his product.
Anyway, everybody can do his choice.
Pinsound is a wonderful device, for pinball fans. It's plug and play and HQ.
Tilt audio is a DIY cheap solution, fun to setup but personally, I did not manage to have any working setup, whatever the config (wms, whitestar). I reached each time a "nearly good level" but not sufficient to remove the original sound card.
My 2 cents

I don’t feel it’s incorrect. Nothing to do with Steve, although I don’t appreciate how they throw their weight around with him.

It’s been several months since Steve posted on this thread even though he continued to visit pinside as recently as 10-12 days ago. At least take the time to say youre busy or anything really. I got into this project on a recommendation from another member telling me this was easier and better than pinsound. Between the scattered support, ambiguous instructions, failure to launch and lack of comms I feel like I wasted my time and money. I’ve been patient but that’s over. I don’t recommend this product in its current form at all.

Have you posted Questions in this thread at all? Or on the slack channel?

I don’t know if it’s been discussed before, but does the pinsound board unscramble sound sets when it’s loading a new set from USB? Could I then take that decompressed file it made On the USB stick and use it in the tilt audio?

It messes with the files, but not in the way you're hoping. I think Steve still has to help with descrambling, if a sound set hasn't already been descrambled

Hello tilt users.
I'm using a Tilt audio 2.6a with RPI3B+ on Last action hero
I get no sound while playing, it's because i use a scrambled pack.
I don't find others pack for Last action Hero(i got one original and on remastered on pinsound website).
Can someone help me to find an unscrambled pack or explain how to descramble it myself ?
For testing i tried Lethal weapon and tales from the crypt pack( from pinsound too) and it work

You have to send a message to Steve; he will unscramble it for you. PinSound has changed the way the sounds are scrambled, and I believe Steve has a method to fix it

Quoted from Ashram56:

To be fair, this is a legal grey area , since the original sound pack authors do not own the rights in the first place anyway... So authorization is not theirs to give, unless it's their media (and for that matter, strictly speaking, it's unlikely they have the right either, it's just that everyone is closing their eyes - guess that's why these soundpacks are on a community website... )

Think of it as more an act of goodwill - one is much more likely to get assistance or updates if one does not have a reputation for taking people's hard work for granted.

Just want to announce that I will no longer accept paypal payments from the US. There are folks here on pinside that start filing paypal cases for refund even though there is evidence that I sent out everything, that it arrived in the US, even in the "JERSEY CITY NJ NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER" but the guy still requests refund from my (at least partly).
Not sure what your opinion is on that, but I'm not a company. I sell kits for more or less purchasing price and ship it also to the US, now I'm being held accountable for the US postal service not being able to deliver?!?!
So either for US no paypal just bank transfer or you provide my a prepaid shipping label of your choice.
Br Steve

That sucks Steve. Sorry to hear that. Some people seem to expect that "mod makers" in the community act as big companies, and wreck it for everyone else.

#1480 3 years ago
Quoted from Ashram56:

To clarify, my point was not about not_ asking permission to the sound pack author (out of courtesy as you point out), but on the fact that just because they give their permission does not, strictly speaking, cover the rights to use it, since they don't own the rights in the first place.

Definitely true!

I'm starting to do some spring cleaning and have a pair of TIlit Audio boards that I no longer need. Was going to use them in a custom re-theme of a Data East game but decided to pass on that project. Both boards were built for Data East so they aren't setup for a WPC game unless more parts were added so I wouln't recommend these for a WPC game. Both include a Raspberry Pi 3A+ and MicroSD card. I had purchased license files for each of these and that is included on the MicroSD cards as those licenses stay with the RPi they were purchased for.
It's been a while since I looked at these so I would recommend saving off the license files and starting fresh with a current build and then put the license back on the new image.
I was looking to get $120 shipped for the V2.5d board and $135 shipped for the V2.6a board. If someone wants both then $220 shipped for the pair.
Since Raspberry Pi are so hard to get these days I'd consider selling the boards without them and just reuse the 3A+ boards for a different project.
Please send a PM if interested.
[quoted image][quoted image]

This is a really good deal, especially with the inclusion of the PIs and SD card. Even if you were to want them for a WPC game, it's only a couple of headers that need to be added - the WPC ribbon cable (which you may already have if you have a Raspberry Pi hanging around) and 4 pin connectors for the speakers - not too bad.
