Following along and looks like this project is finally to a point where things are mostly working. Thanks for the awesome work!

#727 5 years ago

Anyone have a real BOM? I want to build 4 of them, so it makes more sense to just source all the stuff myself. I have most of it figured out, but just want to double check things and see if I have anything wrong or missing.

#729 5 years ago

I did. I think the only thing I cant figure out what it is is the U7 5v dc-dc step down module. The rest took some digging, but I have it. Can you give me a hint on what I am looking for? Thanks!

*Edit* Found the module you were using. Haven't ever seen the mini buck modules before. Good to go

I ordered 2.5d boards on my own a few weeks ago and they look great. Still waiting for all my components to show up from China though I have everything except the amps now I think. As soon as I get them, 3 machines will be getting new boards, and Ill probably build one up for a buddy since minimum order was 5 pcbs. Cant wait to try them out!

Quick question. I have 2.5d boards, is the correct audio output the equal-dac to use just the normal speaker out?

#795 4 years ago

Im having some issues getting my newly built board to work. Not sure where to start. I have tried with both 1.25 and 1.27. This is the error Im seeing on boot:

Here is the full logfile: https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArdtzWfkcdJUh5NclBRw5pOy02fy5Q

No idea where to even start. Ive been in IT for 18 years, so I can do anything you ask

#798 4 years ago

Awesome, Ill give it a try this weekend. Thanks!

#802 4 years ago

OK, so the new image is way smoother! Thanks for updating that. Way easier. My problem now is I get no sound at all from the speakers. I also have no errors that I can see in the logs. I dont hear the boot sounds, game sounds, nothing. Here is my log if you want to look, but is there some other thing for me to look at and see why I cant? I assume the issue is somewhere between the pi and the speaker out. Could it be a bad connection between the pi and the amp? What pins should I check continuity between?

Here is my log if you want to look at it: https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArdtzWfkcdJUh5NclBRw5pOy02fy5Q

#803 4 years ago

So I went through and verified that all points from the pi to the sound boards are ok. I have 2 boards, both do the same thing. It looks like they should be working from the logs, but nothing. Points have continuity. Not sure how to test/verify if the pi is putting out sound though.

#805 4 years ago

I removed the data connection for testing. No more 0x8b commands. My jumper is on the WPC position, and WPC is set in the config. If I hook up a 3.5 speaker to the pi, I hear the sounds. So that is working. I tried connecting it to the DAC module, and im not getting anything. Which audio device should I be choosing? HiFi DAC direct, HiFi DAC with conversion, the sndrpihifiberry, or one of the alsa devices? I have 2 different 2.5d boards, so it seems weird that they both would have bad DAC modules (though I suppose it could be a bad batch from the factory or something). Thanks for the help.

#808 4 years ago
Quoted from Jim-Beam:

Is your DAC Module connect with all pins to the main board ? If so, thats wrong and connect it like on the TiltAudio Website described.
The Output device is Hifi DAC or equal-dac for example...

It totally is. Oops. I'll have to remove those pins and try again. Thanks for the input!

#810 4 years ago

Ill hopefully know soon. I was unable to remove the DAC in one piece (soldering iron slipped and hit one of those tiny ass resistors off and instantly lost it on the carpeted floor ‍♂️) and have a new one arriving soon. Wish there was a cheaper/faster way of getting them than either $7 off of amazon or 45 days from aliexpress.

#815 4 years ago
Quoted from WW2GURU:

Digikey is less than 24 hours for every order I’ve ever made

Do they actually have the proper DAC? Got a part number? I searched but didn't find anything.

#816 4 years ago

So my new DAC arrived and I installed it the correct way and it works better. Looks like the soundset for fish tales is scrambled. All the links to the old descramblers are dead, is there anything available anymore?

The major issue though is Im getting a constant sound played over and over. This is in my fish tales. I have WPC set on both the jumper and in the software. Any ideas on what to try? This is basically the entire log without starting a game, over and over and over again. Attract sounds are off, so nothing should be playing.

You should be able to sudo or su to get root. I swear I did that when I was trying to chase down problems (but that might have been something I was working on for work too...I cant remember).

Anyone have an unscrambled sound set for Fish Tales? Trying to get mine working one part at a time. This is the first hurdle.

#857 4 years ago

So I finally got to try putting my board into my Shadow instead of my fish tales, and Im getting the same error. So I assume that means maybe one of the SMD chips isn't on right or bad maybe? Any ideas? Here is what I get spammed over and over again in the logs with no game started and no attract sounds. Should be silence.

That's interesting. I cant get mine to work correctly in any of my machines (I actually have 2 boards and they both act the same way, but I moved the pi with them). Maybe Ill have to get another pi and try it out.

#869 4 years ago

I posted up my errors before, but basically, Im getting sound requests that shouldn't be there (the same request in multiple games). Also, the sound set is way wrong, and I dont think its scrambled (not sure how to tell if it is though, so who knows).

#881 4 years ago
Quoted from nutty:

Did you ever fix your issues with the Tilt Audio ?

Nope. Still need to try a new pi, but my other one is a pain to get to (its not in a fun or easy place to access). Other than that, not sure what else it could be. Get the same error on 2 different boards (same pi) and on different games.

2 weeks later
#930 4 years ago

I kind of gave up trying. I keep getting a sound triggered constantly when it shouldn't be (on 2 different boards and in multiple machines). There is another member having pretty much the same issue. Its not a commercial product, so it may work for you or it may not. That's the chances you take I guess.

@Nutty, did you fix your issue with the sound being triggered constantly?

#948 4 years ago
Quoted from lucky1:

Can you see any specific command in the logfile triggering the sounds. Maybe just a wrong mapping in the soundset.

Ive posted it before, but this is what I see in my logs over and over and over on 3 different games and 2 different boards (I didn't change soundsets, so it triggers the same sound on all). This is from first boot. It plays constantly, even if there should be no sounds playing. Disconnect CPU and it doesn't play anything except the license info stuff that it should.

Did you try disconnecting the display instead? It definitely sounds like there’s a lot of noise that’s confusing the board. Definitely double check your soldering work - that’s a key area I had trouble with

I didn't try disconnecting the display that I can remember. Ill try that tonight when I get home. Not a soldering work issue. I have repaired many a board. If it was just one board, I might question it still, stuff happens. But this is 2 separate boards doing the exact same thing.

#958 4 years ago

I have color DMD's in 2 of the 3 test machines. They all get the same error.

Unfortunately, I plugged my pi into my board incorrectly last night when moving things around (put the row of pins 1 row over) and didnt see it, and fried my pi. I need to order a new one, so I can't test anything else till that gets here.

I have the exact same issue with all 3 games Ive tried it on (with 2 different boards also). 2 have colorDMD's, 1 is original DMD. Always get the random triggered sound. Would love to see this fixed.

Quoted from kba78:

Also, I would like to suggest that, those of us who have a known working soundset, to post them for others to use.

LOL! You assume way too much! Besides Steve, I'm not sure anyone has a fully working board/setup. It was a great idea, but there are too many issues with the project. First one being the constant hardware refreshes. Setup the hardware and be done. Stop constantly iterating it. Get a single version done and working, THEN iterate a new version with more features, etc. That way you can concentrate on the software and getting that working. There is a great framework setup here, there is just too much jumping around between stuff. Get a base set of features working, then add extras.

#1045 4 years ago

I get where you were going, I'm just saying that nobody should probably even try to tackle this at this point. I bought 5 boards thinking this was going to be amazing and I was really excited to be able to add better sound and shakers to my games. Unfortunately, that looks like it wont happen now unless some serious updates/changes happen. Steve, prove me wrong

I have attempted to contact steve to purchase this product in bulk, assemble, and offer on my online store. I need these for my pins, and might as well build extras while I am home.
Parts will be at pinballcups.com
If steve sees this first, please respond so I can purchase multiple kits and parts.
Thanks,

I would HIGHLY caution you against selling the kits. People will get pissed at you when things don't work. I was thinking about doing the same thing way back, so I ordered some PCB's and attempted to get things going for 3 of my games. The end result was heartbreak. I have a bunch of PCB's sitting here and things just don't work right. I have 3 different PCB's that I had assembled, but none of them work right in any of my games. I wont go into details, look back if you want to see. Anyways, if you really think its a good idea, I would suggest doing 1 for yourself first and seeing if you can get it to work as is. My guess is you won't.

I tried to get a copy of the source files to help fix things, but was unable to get in contact with Steve. I feel like a debby downer in this thread, but I really don't think anyone should attempt to do this project at this point.

I replaced all 74LXX chips with new 74LVC chips. Fired up and from looking at the log, seems like it might be working better now.

I can play the sounds from teh sound set from the web interface, but no sounds play during the game. Like, nothing at all. Any ideas?

Quoted from Zigzagzag:

Well, I am happy to say I now have 3 working 3.0 cards.
I ordered my PCBs fron JLCPCB with the 3 SMDs presoldered.
Using the BOM from https://oshwlab.com/steve45/tiltaudio I chose these ICs (LCSC part numbers in parentheses) :
74LVC138 : Nexperia 74LVC138AD,118 (C6061)
74LVC00 : Texas Instruments/TI SN74LVC00ADRG4 (C7802)
74LVC754 : Nexperia 74LVC574AD,118 (C6097)
On all 3 boards I then had issues with wrong sounds, extra sounds etc. as described in previous posts.
I then got the exact part numbers from Steve :
74LVC138 : Texas Instruments/TI SN74LVC138ADR (C7816)
74LVC00 : Nexperia 74LVC00AD,118 (C6044)
74LVC754 : Nexperia 74LVC574AD,118 (C6097)
As you can see, 2 of the part numbers were different - but all chips were 74LVC series.
I ordered the 138 and 00 chips and had them changed by a professional.
Now all cards work as they should - no more wrong sounds, no extra sounds.
Steve45 : So it seems the WPC interface/bus part is very picky about parts - perhaps this should be reflected in the BOM ?
Can someone tell me what the exact differences are between the chips I chose first and the ones Steve has used ?

Well, that is good news! Looks like thats probably my issue too. Now, do I order new 3.0 boards or try to rework my 2.5d boards. I guess the question is, are those the same chips needed for the 2.5d boards or did they change?

#1411 3 years ago

Anyone put together an actual BOM for the 3.0 boards? Might as well order some new ones.

Alternatively, steve45 can you give us a list of actual part numbers? It should help tremendously in making sure people order the correct things and they work as intended.

#1412 3 years ago

So Ive been poking at the BOM. I need help with a few things and want to confirm a few.

Confirm:
RN1,RN2 4609H-101-472LF‎
RN3,RN4,RN5 4610X-101-470LF
B1 GBU406

Unknown:
R1,R2,R3
R4,R5
C4,C5,C6
L1,L2,L3,L4,L5,L6
C7,C8,C9,C10,C11,C12

I couldnt find FRAME1 anywhere in the files, not sure what that is.

I have links for the random stuff and part numbers for everything else. Hopefully Steve can either just share all the part numbers or at least confirm the first 3 and give part numbers for the other 5.

Just want to announce that I will no longer accept paypal payments from the US. There are folks here on pinside that start filing paypal cases for refund even though there is evidence that I sent out everything, that it arrived in the US, even in the "JERSEY CITY NJ NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER" but the guy still requests refund from my (at least partly).
Not sure what your opinion is on that, but I'm not a company. I sell kits for more or less purchasing price and ship it also to the US, now I'm being held accountable for the US postal service not being able to deliver?!?!
So either for US no paypal just bank transfer or you provide my a prepaid shipping label of your choice.
Br Steve

Dang, that sucks. I hate USPS. I didn't think they could get worse, then COVID hit and bam, they figured out how. I literally had a letter from my mom who lives 2 hours away get "lost" and took 5 weeks to get here. My packages go back and forth to cities not even close, etc. We all have seen it lately Im sure. Anyways, if you are serious about shipping to the US, either use UPS or DHL. They definitely are more expensive, but you know it will arrive. Second thing is paypal sucks. I hate paypal. The dispute process is ridiculous. Basically, the seller never wins, which is just assinine. Buyers know that, so they will file a dispute even if they got something. So bad.

*edit* just thinking, did the person contact USPS and have them follow up on it? They have a phone number you can call to do that, or talk with someone at your local post office. They do actually take that seriously. I didnt get a piece of mail that showed up on my informed delivery and they were all over it pretty quick.

#1479 3 years ago
Quoted from steve45:

of course, yes. maybe I will change shipping to dhl but this would more than double the shipping cost.
from my point of view the easiest solution would be one of you US pinheads would offer kits. I would appreciate that and still sell some licenses.
next rev of pcb will be even easier to assemble and has less parts

Let me drop you a PM. Id be willing to take that on probably, but have a few questions first.

#1492 3 years ago

For US pinsiders, I plan on taking up selling kits in the US. I had ordered enough stuff for a few boards for myself about a month ago and those should be arriving shortly (I had planned on keeping them all for myself, but Ill sell 4 of the 5 to help people out). I plan on ordering a bunch of stuff to do a lot more kits, but shipping times for anything electronics is insane. My order from Digi-key has taken 3 weeks and everything was in stock. So Ill be slow to get started, but once I get a big order of components, should be ready to rock. Im guessing it will probably be the end of April or so by the time stuff gets here and I can keep anything going with regularity.

3 weeks later
#1505 3 years ago

Im just waiting on a few things to start selling boards to US people. I have enough for one Williams kit currently with what I had sitting here. If someone is interested, let me know and I can sell that. Hopefully the rest of the stuff will be here soon. I'm having huge issues with sellers claiming they shipped something, then after asking them about it, they claim "it must have been lost, we will resend."

#1517 3 years ago

In case you US people are looking for kits, I have just listed the 4 kits I have in the pinside shop. I finally got all the stuff to get the 3.0 kits out for Williams (data east would need the ADC, if you want to use in in a DE, let me know and I can include the other connectors at least). I will also take care of soldering on the SMD's for you if you would like me to no charge. Here is the link to them: https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1180-slap-save-creations/05007-tiltaudio-sound-board

I will be ordering the stuff for 3.5 kits (I already have all the components on the way, but I need to order the boards still), but its going to take a few weeks before the boards are ready. Hopefully going forward, Ill have enough stuff on hand to keep a steady supply for everyone who wants them

#1521 3 years ago

Heh, I noticed the same thing. Was wondering what was up with that.

1 week later
#1523 3 years ago

I have good news and some bad news. First the good news! I received the 3.5 boards I ordered and put them up in my shop ( https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1180-slap-save-creations/05007-tiltaudio-sound-board ). There are 2 options. One is the regular full kit. This includes everything needed to get going except a pi and SD card. It even includes the OLED display (I feel that really helpful for troubleshooting, so its worth just including it). The second option is an "upgrade" kit. This is for those of you with a 3.0/3.1 board already who want to get a newer board. This basically strips out the expensive things and makes you remove them from your old board.

Now the bad news. The silk layer in the files was wrong and I didn't catch it before I ordered the boards. So some of the writing is missing. Functionally, this makes no difference, but you will definitely need to refer to a diagram for assembly. Ill include one in the kits I sell. Im also in the middle of setting up a wiki with some info in it to supplement the excellent info Steve has on his website, and it will be located there as well.

I also added an option to have me assemble the board for you for an additional fee. All you need to do is pop in a pi with the image on it and away you go!

If anyone has any questions, please let me know. There are pictures of the kits and a general idea of placement of the components on the store page.

#1527 3 years ago

Just wanted to mention I have added a wiki to my website with some helpful notes to supplement the excellent info that Steve has on his website. Eventually, I would love to get a list of modifications to the sound sets for every game, so that people know what to apply where to make it sound like the original (ideally this would either be for the already available altsound version or a customized one that goes along with it). That way its easier to get up and running with a board. If you have something you would like me to add, please let me know!

#1531 2 years ago
Quoted from Zigzagzag: - perhaps the language setting could be stored server side ? I hardly think there are many user cases where more than one user with different language preferences connect to the same TiltAudio card.

I agree. I cannot for the life of me get the setting to stick, even on different devices.

#1534 2 years ago

I have a favor to ask. If you are running a tiltaudio card, can you tell me which soundset you used (a link to it would be icing, but not totally necessary) and what issues you had with sounds? (fixed or unfixed) If you could send me your config file, even better! I would like to compile a settings list for each game in my wiki, so people know how to setup each soundset. You can respond here or PM me. Either way, I really appreciate it. Why should everyone work through the same issues on their own if we can hivemind it and get things fixed is my thought.

To start, Im using the altsound fishtales mix (http://altsound.vpin24.com/). There are quite a few issues with sounds ducking correctly, and with some sounds running too long. Im currently trying to rework the altsound csv as much as possible to fix the issues that can be fixed inside of altsound (so it just "works" for others). Ill also have a link to my config file eventually for the other stuff. Im working on like 30 things right now, so its slow progression.

I've been following this thread. I think the idea is super cool. I do think that the info is too spread around, and the German web store does not help.
If this idea truly works, it would benefit from having better documentation and how-tos, and a standardized web site. I had to correlate 3 sources to get an idea of where this project is today. Anyways, my 0.02 dollar. I want one for my Last Action Hero.

I started a wiki here: https://www.slapsavecreations.com/tiltaudio with some of the important things that I felt were hard to find, in this thread only or on slack and not on Steves site. I can add more if you have suggestions. I would love to add each game that is covered by this and then a settings file/sound pack so its fairly plug and play. I feel like that is the biggest thing missing. Problem is, I dont have all the games to be able to do that If you have a board and can pack up your sounds/settings and send them to me, I can put them out there.

In the past few months Steve has updated his site a lot with some really great info. I just wanted to make it a little easier to find things or make things clearer. If you have any suggestions, PM me and Ill get things added.

As to board availability, I have all the parts for as many boards as people want except the PCM5102 DAC's. I cant for the life of me get them. I am on vendors 6 an 7 right now :/ As soon as I get a vendor to actually send me some instead of a bogus shipping number, Ill have boards ready to go.

Quoted from ViperJelly:

ok...I got mine assembled but the pi 3B+ will not plug in, the USB ports are in the way. What step did I miss?

You need to use a raised/extended 40 pin GPIO connector. A normal one wont work as RobotWorkshop alluded to.

Just got another shipment of boards in for the US people if you were waiting for them. They are up in the shop.

#1657 2 years ago

He is using a 3.6.

Since you are getting sounds from the web interface, it seems to me like its not seeing the commands from the game. Make sure the cable is in the correct direction and manually set it to DE mode (the auto detection hasnt worked for me or others) and reboot.

If that doesn't work, you are going to need to download the log and post it or look for errors in it.

Anyone have a picture of the board in a Data East machine? Trying to see what the oled looks like (which way it needs to be rotated). Thanks.

I would say if you are getting 12v to both amps, one plays sound and the other doesn't, then the amp is probably bad. The DAC outputs the same signal to both "channels" so there is no way the dac is bad. I suppose it could be the potentiometer or resistor (the only other two things after teh dac), but I doubt it. Have you tried to hook up a speaker to the amp output itself? That way you can make sure none of the traces from the amp to the board connecter aren't bad.

Cats out of the bag I unfortunately versioned this poorly. I should have called it like 3.65 or something because it could collide with what Steve puts out if he doesn't take my additions. Anyways, I added a few asked for additions to the last batch of boards I had made. You can rotate the OLED for DE machines (but only the more common OLED pinout), and I added a second 34 pin connector for WPC95 machines. WPC95 machines needed a special cable made in order to use it in them. Instead of that, I added a second connector which you can just use as a jumper. WAY easier than making a special cable. Unfortunately, I have no way to test it out. The biggest and what I consider the best change is I added markings to the PCB to make it easier to know what/where to connect. The header pins that need pins removed have a big white square over them. For the DE and WPC ribbon connectors, I put a white box on the side that gets the cut out (you can see it towards the upper left of the pic above). Lastly, there is also a wider white box around the pins for the DAC.

Other than that, assembly is the exact same as 3.5/3.6. I'll take a pic and highlight the changes as some point, but its been super busy around here and I haven't had a chance.

I know Steve has been busy with real life, so he hasn't been working on this much. Grabbing the log from it after it happens should help narrow down whats going on.

If you arent getting any sounds from the pin, but everything else works, then you have a problem somewhere in the input section (basically, top left). For that section, pinball machine input comes from the ribbon cable, through the resistor networks, then to the little black pill board. From there, it gets sent to the pi. You probably have an issue somewhere in that area. I would use a multimeter to test continuity. You can also boot it up and then grab the log from the gui. It will tell you if its not seeing the black pill board. If thats the case, then it may be that the black pill wasnt flashed right. You can either rename the file on the sd card (cant remember what its called off the top of my head) or reflash the card (or another card) and stick it in. It only flashes the black pill board once.

I hate to say it, but it appears that board is toast. Looking at the network resistor soldering, it appears you made the pads larger. That basically means you just put all the pads to ground. I would guess that if you do a continuity test from any of the legs to a ground, they will all be connected. I would start there. If so, not much you can do easily. The only thing would be to cut all traces at the WPC header and then solder in wires directly to where they need to go.

Yes, its a total replacement. It does have amps and also you can balance the speaker volume between the cabinet and head (they have separate gain wheels).

Getting the original sound is pretty easy. Having said that, it does take tweaking currently. Volume of sounds, etc needs adjusting out of the box because it plays them all at one level. Personally, I find playing with an altsound version to be the easiest. Ultimately, as more people use them, I hope they share back their tweaks so people can just download the sound set (like the other big name). Id love to host them, so if you have a sound set that is pretty good that you have tweaked, let me know.

Replacing sounds is easy, but they need to be about the same length. Depending on the situation, runover/under wont matter though.

Ultimately, if you like to tweak things and have some time to play around, its a fun project.

Wait, so it worked just fine in a different machine but not yours? Thats crazy. I would boot it up and grab the log, that's where the magic of what's going on (or not) will be.

Just some random thoughts. Are you both on the same ROM version on the machine? Any chance you could borrow his cable to test with? Maybe CPU as well?

#1757 2 years ago

You will need to download the log and see what's happening in the beginning of startup. See if there are any errors or something. As in, before you even start a game.

Quoted from Zigzagzag:

I see board revision 3.6 is released. Could you tell us what the changes are, steve45 ?

3.7 is one I created. It added an additional WPC95 port (so you dont have to use the cable adapter) and OLED rotation for DE games. I also added some markings on the silk screen layer so its easier to know what to solder/orient to. I sent the changes back up to Steve, so they will be available in a future release.

First, thanks! Feedback is always good. If there was anything you thought should be in the wiki that I run, please tell me! I would love to add more if it's useful. Once you put a board together, you kind of forget what made you stumble or what didn't make sense.

Can't help with the BT. I haven't played with that feature. Hopefully steve45 or someone else can help with that.

RE: sound libraries. Ive been begging for people to send me theirs after they get it setup and working. Even if its 90% good, its better than everyone starting from scratch. Unfortunately, Ive had zero sent to me Honestly, Im not sure how to beg even more for them.

As for the config. You can either read up on the altsound format and edit it directly, use the altsound editor that luck made, or you can use the web interface to do it as well. Some of the altsound/sound packages are better than others too. Anyways, when I had time and was working on mine, I would trigger something specific in the game with the glass off, then figure out how it was wrong. Like, if I triggered x and sound y played instead of x, make note and fix it. Same with volumes or cutting off of sounds (ducking). Depending on the soundset chosen, it can be more or less work.

Hopefully that answers some things.

Upgrading either most likely won't fix issues. The issues you are seeing are probably a function of your soundset and it needs some tweaking.

Sorry, was away from the computer a lot over the holidays. Just catching up. In order to see anything in the live log, you need to set the level AND hit the checkbox. If you still arent seeing anything, just hit download. It will download a file with all the log info since boot.
