Steve ships fast after he has all your parts. I got mine in only a few days, and I STILL havent had time to install it. I have everything built, just need to load the sounds and install the license.

Order arrived. Thanks Steve. Couple of questions. Looks like one of the volume knobs was mounted on the wrong side of the circuit board from the factory. Are both amps suppose to be the same? Also do I need to have Linux installed on sd card partition before installing RasPiSound image that I downloaded?

You will have to fix that potentiometer, that’s a bummer. They should be identical.

And no just image your SDCard with the raspisound image using Etcher or something. You do not need to do anything additional

Ok. I am waiting for my board but I have been reading etc. A buddy of mine is having trouble setting his up and I have been looking through trying to get answers. For a project like this and especially if your selling something, the documentation on how to make this work is just not there. There needs to be a step by step instructions on what to do to set this up. I think that there are assumptions made as to what everyone knows.

Can someone post a step by step guide on how to set this up from step zero. I have a board In front of me. What do I load on the Pi, how do I load it? Etc . There are too many variables to figure out on your own.

We need some help. I would install this on several of my games but if I can’t get it working then I will just move on.

I think most of the pictures are with either the old board or Pi zero.

Did you read the how-to on pinball-mods.de?

1. You need to put an image onto the sd card. You can get it for free in the shop at go-dmd.de. there's a couple of image writer programs like win32diskimager etc.

2. After imaging is done you will find two partitions one with Linux for the pi (the firmware). One windows readable partition for sounds and config. On a windows machine you will only see this partition.

3. Copy at least one sound set and do some basic configuration e.g. setup vendor setting for your machine (see how-to).

4. Do a try run. Connect some speaker or maybe only earphones to pi audio jack (or speaker outlets of the amplifiers) and power the thing up. You should a boot sound and some announcements (including serial number to use for licensing).

5. If you going to use sound sets from pinsound, these are scrambled most of the time. You can recognize this as the folders have big mixed numbers in the folder name. If so retrieve a descrambling config file from pinball-mods.de download section. There's one per sound set. If you don't find yours, give me a call, I'll create it.

6. Connect it to the real machine, by connecting the ribbon cable and do another test. If it works out go ahead and install it.

7. All kits 2 and newer need 12v power supply. I recommend a new separate switched power supply, but to connect those you need to touch main power, which is not everybody's taste. Alternatively you can draw power from the old power supply from the soundcard.

Here's a real rough draft of where I'm at right now. Toward the last two steps, I'm make some assumptions as I didn't see anything about where the translation / descrambling file goes. I'll continue to update this as I work through the install on my end. I'm sure I'll have more questions for Steve BTW - Thanks again for making this possible Steve!

Things you’ll need before you start:

• A completely built 2.x Raspisound board
• 12v DC power supply
• 1x 6” USB micro to USB Male adapter
• 1x USB Sound Adapter
• 1x 6” Male to Male 3.5mm Stereo cable
• 1x Raspberry PI Zero (Standard or Wifi Version)
• 1x 16GB Micro SD Card
• 1x Micro SD adapter (I’m using a USB to Micro SD Adapter)

• The most current version of Raspisound firmware for the Raspberry PI Zero from https://go-dmd.de/produkt/raspberry-pinsound-image/
o At the time of this document, V1.14 is the most current
o V1.14 File Name - raspisound-zero-v1.14.img.xz

• A disk imaging utility. I use Windows and have found Win32DiskImager to be easy to use and it’s free
o https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/files/Archive/win32diskimager-1.0.0-install.exe/download

• 7zip (for extracting the .img file from the .xz archive)
o https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

Setting up the Micro SD card

• Once you have the most current raspisound-zero firmware, open the archive with 7zip and extract the .img file to a folder like your desktop.
o ** This will expand to roughly 15GB

• Connect your Micro SD card to your PC and wait for Windows to install the “drive” and assign it a letter
o Take note of the drive letter as you will need it for the next step

• Open the Win32 Imager software
o Using the “Device” drop down at the far right, select the drive letter that contains your Micro SD card
o Click on the folder icon to the left of the “Device” drop down to browse to and select the raspisound-zero-v1.xx.img file
o Click “Write” to start the process of writing the image to the Micro SD card. This will take anywhere from 10-20 minutes

• Once you’ve successfully written the raspisound-zero-v1.xx.img file to your Micro SD card, you will get a message from Win32DiskImager saying that it was successful, and Windows will shortly after ask you if you want to format the newly discovered drive
o Click NO

• I downloaded the “JP OST Endprodukt” soundtrack from the Pinside community
o Since this is already a known soundtrack that needs to be descrambled, go to https://pinball-mods.de/downloads/ and download the corresponding file. In my case, the downloaded file was “config.raspisnd3.zip”

• Open Windows file explorer, and browse to the drive labeled “PINSOUND”
o Browse to “Data” and then “Sound”

• Extract the “JP OST Endprodukt” zip file to the “Sound” folder and rename the folder to which position you’d like it in the selection
o In my case, Jurassic Park was extracted to <Drive Letter>\data\sound\JP_OST_Endprodukt and I renamed the folder to <Drive Letter>\data\sound\1
o Extract the contents of the “config.raspisnd3.zip” file to the newly renamed folder from the step above

Of course it should. You should even get starting RasPiSound announcements if some speaker is attached.

Check SD card. Did you download the right image? There's two different ones for PiZero or Pi3.

It's basically the RasPiSound "firmware" running on a windows host computer.
Of course you cannot connect the real machine to this exe running on windows, but to test the soundset and the config it's still suitable.
You can start it like: "despi.exe -d &lt;basepath to soundsets&gt;".
Its important to include .exe at the end, in order to find and validate the signature.
You can control sound effects and background music via keyboard and also playback recordings.
A simple "despi.exe -h" produces some help text.
Keyboard commands:
Digits -&gt; entering sound number.
p -&gt; play
+ oder - -&gt; Volume up / down
n -&gt; soundset 1
m -&gt; soundset 2
q -&gt; quit
d -&gt; dump current state
All config files are read and written like from the real "firmware" of RasPiSound running on a PI in a real machine.
Logfile output is written to the console.
And not to forget: its a windows cmdline executable, so you need to start a shell "cmd.exe" first and use it from there.

This is a command line tool. First start cmd.exe and then despi.exe.

I’ve got mine working enough to tell me it’s running v1.14, Data East mode and the serial number! However, when it gets to the point where it uses sound set 1, all I get is a oscillating feedback like sound and the serial number repeating. I’m thinking something isn’t mapped correctly for the sounds.

I did leave the config.pinsound in the root of the \1\ folder - would that affect it?

What’s the next step?

After I got the key file from Steve, mine stopped announcing the serial number.

And the placement of your config.raspisnd is placed correctly in the /1/ folder. Note that it is actually no longer required that you name the folders 1, 2 and so on. So instead of /1 it could be something like /IJ_Original

So the config.raspisnd needs to contain the hash mappings and if needed gain and ducking info and be placed like this:

/data/sound/SOUNDSET_NAME/config.raspisnd

And the other more general config file containing vendor info, preload options and so on is called raspisnd.ini and needs to be placed like this:

/data/sound/raspisnd.ini

But start by making sure you have purchased a valid key file via the link above, and placed it in the /data folder.

Rotary encoder is mounted to the pcb. This is before I added the jumpers as per Steve’s documentation. I ended up drilling holes through the board to better secure the rotary encoder with the two unused tabs.

Also, when I went through his documentation post, it said numbers, but either way is fine for me. In the log below, it looks like it found the files and the config.raspisnd.
Steve - One thing, I'm using a USB soundbar at the moment as my USB sound card seems to have walked away :/. Also, I snagged the log (below). Is there anything you can see any obvious errors that would affect this?

What I can see from the logfile: the board is receiving a command 0x80 (play sound effect 128 -> trex roar sound) in a high frequency, which isn't normal. I would recommend to check the shield especially bit 7. There seems to be some noise on that wire that make the sound triggering over and over again?

Also you need to check the interrupt wire SWDEN, maybe you simply missed to place the jumper correctly to DE mode (lower left of schematics)

I went back through and tested everything that I soldered, and didn't find any immediate issues. However, I did notice that the small 5v transformer is making a noticeable high pitch noise. I'm wondering if it's having issues too.

It's true you can hear these DC DC stepdown converter, at least if you younger than me
But I would not consider this to be the problem as the pi was booting and running, so the 5v seem to be okay. If you have a DMM you can also test the power supply.

I have a Pi3 B+. The firmware will not boot. I’ve tried my sd card in my friends Pi3 B and it boots fine. I have booted mine with Noobs just to make sure my Pi3 works. Is the firmware compatable with Pi3 B+ or did I miss that in the documentation?

Honestly, I've never tried Pi3 B+. From what I know it should run, because it's a simple Arch Linux based image with some preinstalled libraries and the RasPiSound service.

I will do some research, if there is a known issue with the arch Linux version I use and maybe buy a Pi3 B+ for myself for testing.

For now that's all I can say.

At this point, any other tips or should I pull the surface mount logic chips and reinspect?

There is an issue with Pi3 B+ and the arch linux distribution, so I need to create a complete new image in order to run on Pi3 B+. For now you can only use Pi3 (classic). As soon as the image is ready, I will announce it here.

There are some tests you can do:
1. try to switch the mode jumper to wpc or pull it completely out, see what happens.
2. switch to vendor=1 in raspisound.ini even if you're going to use it with DE.
3. If you have the equipment try to sample the signal on the SWDEN wire (this triggers the interrupt)

How are you guys connecting the speakers? I haven’t gotten mine installed yet and I want it to be reversible; what do you suggest instead of cutting wires? I guess I could jumper the connectors..

Still haven't had much luck. For some reason or another, it seems like it's locking up on this round. Everything stops playing and nothing seems to be responsive while using the rotary encoder.

I do have an oscilloscope, but I'm pretty new to using it. I'll see if I can dig it out and do the testing you suggested.

** Update **

Jumper placement and complete removal did not make a difference. However, I changed the vendor to WPC (1) in the raspisound.ini and the log output looks a bit different. It almost looks like it's doing more what it should be now. There is still complete silence after it says the serial number and that it's preloading the sounds.

I have had success with playing sound sets through the raspisound board to speakers but only if I select the sound. The pin is not calling for the sounds to be played. I think it’s a configuration problem on my part. I’m confused about the raspisound.ini. Is this a file I create on my own? Also unsure what to put in the use-usb.txt file or is it suppose to be empty? Sounds play fine through the 3.5mm port from the pi but not through my usb sound card.

use-usb.txt file can be empty. It's just an indication for the RasPiSound service that it should use USB sound. Unfortunately this cannot be controlled easily through config files, that's why I need an indication file.

The config file raspisound.ini is meant to be created by you to set some basic configuration for your machine. Most relevant is the vendor setting, because it controls the wire protocol use by the machine. See how-to on pinball-mods.de for description of all settings.
