I just finished restoring a Williams Flash pinball. As on all older bally/williams (at least that i have seen) with double flippers on one or both sides, the activation switch for the secondary/upper flipper is located on the lower flipper eos. This will result in a small bit if delay for the upper flipper so it's kind of hard to get the timing right. For some reason the lag was more than usual on my Flash upper flipper and i could not seem to get the adjustment of the switches correct to get the lag down. Then i thought about it for a while and came up with why not have the secondary flipper switch located on the flipper button just as on newer machines. You'd get the same action as later pinballs with staging and no noticable lag. I relocated the switch and sure enough it works great, no lag! Is it somehow not electronically correct to make this mod cause i can't seem to come up with such a reason?

Does anyone know the reason why they put the flipper activation switch on the lower flipper eos instead of a second switch on the flipper button?

Of course, on some other machines like paragon or harlem, it would mean you could stage and cradle up and perhaps make the game easier. Not sure, but maybe it would be a nice change in competition to alter the gameplay.

Upper flipper is activated by lower flipper EOS to prevent loading the power supply with two coils energizing at the same time, which would cause voltage drop and weak flip. The downside is that there is a slight delay, as you noticed.

Ah ok. I don't notice any weak flips, if anything, the upper flipper became a lot more powerful actually, and I'm pretty sure it's not just because of the lag that went away.

The staging double cab switch is definitely superior, and serves a similar purpose. Williams had only invented it a year earlier though, and maybe had a patent? Other manufacturers didn't seem to make use of staged flippers for a long time

The EOS and upper flipper activation should be break-make. Meaning the EOS opens just before the upper activates.
