I just got these games in from Italy and I'd like to accomplish two things. One, make them look as good as is possible with my skills/abilities/time and two, prevent them from deteriorating further. From the aspect of cleaning, waxing, etc. I have a handle on that from what I've read over the years. I have done some "self made" restoration on a Jurassic Park before using epoxy to fill in large missing sections of inserts. I've never done any mylar removal, color matching, clear coating, decal re-application, etc. I've watched some videos, read some things but I'm not 100% on where to start. I have two or three specific areas if someone might comment with any specifics that would help a lot.
1. The missing label on ToM that should say "Spirit Ring". I found the decals already and purchased the whole set (mainly for that one area). Off the top of my head I assume I am going to want to cleanly slice out the rest of the old decal, cut out the new one to match somehow and apply it and then clear over it somehow. I hope that is the process, in general. The biggest question (but I'm fuzzy on the whole process) is how to finish it once done. Can I clear just that one area? Do I need to clear the whole playfield out of the game? Can I mask off a larger area and clear just that... what clear to use, etc.
Just below the decal there is a crack in the wood which is raised up. It's hard to see in the image, it goes from the black into the purple. That seems like it needs some glue (like a CA glue?) injected and then some pinpoint pressure applied to re-adhere it?
2. Lifting inserts in TAF. I've seen others talk about fixing this by injecting some clear coat under them and apply pressure to let it dry. I am really not sure what the best method is, if I want to try and remove them and put in new ones, how to finish them (per #1 above), etc.
3. The solid color inserts like the "Tiger Saw" insert on ToM. It's missing some yellow paint and I figure if I color match and repaint it there will be a opacity difference when the light passes through it.
4. Do I do anything with the mylar on TAF or just leave it? It all looks somewhat ok except the semi-circle around the left sling. Looks like it is starting to come up a bit.
5. What do I do to protect the playfields overall? Seems like they are quite worn and more play will wear away more paint. Can I do a light clear coat with the playfield in the machine and just mask off the various mechanisms? I am thinking like the large area that mylar would cover, not every little area. Or do I need to look at getting mylar installed?
Thanks to whomever takes the time to help!
