Hello all!

I am picking up an AFM pinball machine soon and was wondering if anyone has installed LEDs into their machine? If so, did you go for a full LED conversion or mix your LEDs with more traditional incandescent bulbs?

The main reason that I am thinking of putting in LEDs is to try and do everything I can to protect the machine and, since LEDs output far less heat than incandescent bulbs I thought this might be a good idea. Plus, I like the look of LEDs and since I was considering adding the Bill Ung saucer kit (with green LEDs to help balance so much red on the table) I thought an LED might go well.

Finally, if you did install LEDs where did you buy them? Then only kit I see is from cointaker.com...

Thank you all for your input!

I have all Leds in my AFM, and I even added extras.
I got them all from Cointaker, but I didn't use the kit, I made my own.

Pheobe's AFM is also the best looking AFM I've ever seen, and I've seen some beauties!

I would recommend going with your own as opposed to the kit, then you can add your own personality to the machine, and probably have led's left over at the end of the day so you can mix and match as you see fit. Don't forget that pinside discount with your order.

LED all the way. Tricked mine out with cointaker kit. you'll love it.

I have all led under inserts, all regular bulbs for g.i....looks great to me.

#6 11 years ago

Cointaker supers for under the inserts, and frosteds for GI and backbox.....looks awesome.
Mix and match colors to taste.

Thanks all! I greatly appreciate the thoughts! I am certainly leaning towards LEDs, yet I have never put a kit together myself. I was guess just look at the manual for the bulb listing and the order the LEDs. However, is it cheaper to make the kit myself?

Thanks again!

Yes... cheaper to put together your own kit, but you will need extra's to figure out what colors look best to YOU.

I really enjoyed playing it at the Ohio show! Gorgeous example!

You don't need a lot of colors, I used red retros under the rollover guides and the one GI next to it and the two led 555 base for the pops, the rest are warm white and cool white for under the clear inserts.
I used retros for the GI and two white condoms over the two lower sling retros.
Cool white flexis under the two hallway plastics.
I also added a 3rd led to the Return to Battle insert and lighted the scoops with super brights.
Hard wired a flexi to the saucer board to eliminate the 906 that constantly was blowing.

The purple and blues on Butterflygirl24's machine look fantastic. That's a great example of changing the character of a pin!

Go for it!!!

the best you can do insted of buying the kit, is to buy the bulbs individually to choose the colors you like the best on some spots
with the kist you dont same money, so it's funnier making your own kit.

Thanks everyone! I will give making an LED kit a try since the bulbs and flasher types are in the operator's manual.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone chosen green LEDs for the Bill Ung saucer kit? Along that line, I really like the purple in Pheobe's saucer kit!

Thank you again!

I like the look of tracelifters-

I have the green ing saucer leds and love them. I also changed the mini saucer domes to green.

If you like it, do it. To hell with those guys that want to tell you what should or shouldn't do to your pins. BTW you should definitely LED it.

LED the inserts with frosted LEDs and Warm Whites. Leave the GI alone.

Congrats Sam.

My original saucer kit was red so when I did the hallway mod extension I just went with red as well.
When I replaced the PF I drilled it under the small plastic in the back and ran the saucer looms through it rather than snaking it through the hole for the gate coil.
On the hallway mod I ran the wires like this, much cleaner than the way in the instructions.

Well, I am about ready to order. I agree with color matching the insert to LED and I think I will go with Pinball Life's Ghost Buster LEDs (please see: http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=2166&parent=192 and http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=2165&parent=192).

I hear you Vic (thanks by the way! ) yet I am a bit leery of incandescents due to the heat and power draw, thus for the GI I think I will go with the frosted LEDs.

However, what do you all recommend for the backbox?

Also, I did not see in the AFM manual where it lists how many #44/47 bulbs are required for the GI and the backbox. Does anyone know?

Thanks all!
