Quoted from jonesjb:

I’d buy one, but with my limited collection (3 pin max). I’m not sure it would work well with my Shadow... given they have very similar locks.

Ripley’s and The Shadow do both utilize a magnet located top/center of playfield that grab the ball and throw it backward up the playfield. Only seen that on 3 games, these and Dialed In! Otherwise, I agree, very different games. To me, Ripley’s is a slightly simpler version of Dialed In, with a dash of TZ. Even the code is similar. Visit continents, hit shots, collect letters to spell Ripley’s. Or, hit cell phone, start disaster, hit shots, collect letters to spell Dialed In! DI is a polished, modern version of Ripley’s. In my opinion. I owned them both and had them next to each other. They are definitely cousins.

I’m not sure why this pin is so underrated. Theme, most likely. Callouts can be a bit goofy too. But as for pure shots, it’s one of the best.

After 4 years of collecting pins and owning about 50 at various times, I’m starting to cycle back to games I regret letting go of. I first played Ripley’s in early 2018 and was sure I wanted to own one. I traded for a very nice example and really enjoyed it, but decided to sell it after about 10 months. The stars aligned again and now I’m waiting on delivery of my 2nd RBION! Really looking forward to owning this great pin again. It’s strange and a little ridiculous sometimes, but the design and shots are a blast and the code is nicely done. Some cool looping, flowing shots, but a fair amount of stop-go too, which I like. Happy to be back in the club, mon!

Grats on getting a Ripley’s again. I love the theme, totally remember the show on TV as a little kid. It was pretty much the weird side of YouTube before we had YouTube lol

Thanks! It’s on its way to Michigan from just down the road from you in Phoenix!

Quoted from Kenz:

I would like to powder coat my machine the same colour as a Dialed in LE. Anyone know the colour of blue I should ask for and what do you call the sparkle..

JJP calls it “Quantum Haze,”. The powder coat painter can probably match it. Many colors with and without sparkle at Prismatic powders.com. Here is an example of a blue they offer.

After a year without one, Ripley’s has returned to our collection! Found a very nice example in AZ. I’ve been looking for several months. Sold a really nice, loaded example last year. Now we have a similar example. Needs a color DMD, down the road. I forgot the terrific shots and flow this pin has. Great use of spinners and magnets. Tons of shots. One of Pat Lawlor’s best. His “kitchen sink” pin. He threw in many of his signature features. This game has 6 pop bumpers yet doesn’t feel cramped. Underrated. We are very happy to bring this game back for a second visit. Hopefully it stays a very long time. It’s moving up my list of favorites.

Definitely needs a color DMD, this game looks great with one. That's coming soon, maybe 2-3 weeks. Had this pin twice now, and 45-50 other pins. This one is top 10 for me.

Quoted from Flippermatt:

I just swapped my super-bands to silicone bands and it is somewhat better from airborne point of view. The two criminals to the darn airballs are as said, the two posts guarding the scoop. They are 3/8"'s according to the manual but will still want to deflect the ball through the glass and to outer space if hit spot on... Never going back to super-bands again btw. Much better controll and feeling with silicone bands.
//Matt

I personally agree. I like silicone too. I get the Titan flipper rubber. I have trouble getting the super-bands on sometimes too. Too tight.

For those that have this game and DI. Do they shoot similar ?

I’ve owned both games twice, and I did (and do) see similarities between the two. DI has better flow, and is more refined. But they do feature some similar shots and gimmicks (upper right flipper, magnet up the middle) and the rules are sorta similar (start modes on both, spell RIPLEYS vs spell DIALED IN). Lots of differences, to be sure, and I still own both. They are more different than alike. But they are at least 2nd cousins!

Quoted from liftmagnet:

Still having issues with this game, I originally posted this in a different thread a week ago and never got any responses so I thought I would try here.
Having walked away from this game for about a month I started looking at it again the problem is as follows.
-Ball 1 and 2 Idol will be lit at the beginning of play, it will not trigger until opto is broken and will score 1 idol hit as it should.
-Ball 3 idol will light for less than a second after ball served into shooter lane you will hear the idol audio and the opto will turn off, this is not counted as an idol hit.
-During the entire game a shot into the lower bumpers or the scoop will only light the idol for 1-2 seconds before you hear the Idol audio and the opto truns off, this also will not score an idol hit.
-During muliball the idol will be on an score hits correctly.
-The only time when I am getting extra idol hits scored is during the bonus countdown; it will add a idol hit and then score one more than the number of hits. (ie. upon draining you have 5 idol hits, when the bonus countdown starts it will always add one extra and you will hear the idol noise, the display will then tell you that you had 7 idol hits even though it only added one, beginning of the next ball it will display that you have had 6 idol hits.)
This is 100% repeatable, I have never seen the game award a extra idol hit when the transmit opto is on and waiting for a ball to break the beam (ie. beginning of ball 1 and 2, as well as during muliball). The only time I get random "hits" is when the transmit opto is off and should not even be expecting hits.
Hopefully someone maybe has some insights, because at this point I am thoroughly confused especially the bizarre behaviour during the bonus countdown.

This probably isn’t your problem, but my idol was acting very strange and sometimes awarding phantom hits and other times not registering at all. I decided to unscrew the optos and thoroughly clean them both, and then I cleaned the clear insert the beam shoots through from under the playfield. After that, it worked 100% correctly. But yours sounds so specific and repeatable, it makes me wonder about something with a rom or on the board? Someone smarter than I will know. Post the answer when you find out.

I added one of these bottles to my RBION for fun.

New to Ripley's club and entered back into pinball collecting. Sold all my arcade and pinball machines about 5 years ago to put a nice down payment on a nice house. This Ripley has modded interactive translite LEDs, Color DMD, idol toy, shaker motor, and full led lights. Currently having problems with head optos and may need replaced but other then that, I think I have it where I want it. So glad to be back.
[quoted image]

Welcome back. I love RBION and have owned it twice. There is a lot of pinball in this machine. Underrated, and it’s already in the top 100. I recently got 4 Ripley’s letters, my most so far. Great game! Good luck with yours. Luckily optos are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks for the input all. I ordered some basic warm white LED/SMD bulbs and the LED OCD board. I think this will fix the issues I am having while still keeping the 'retro' feel of the game.
I have been looking at the scoop light, but the only one I see appears to always keep the scoop lit, unless I'm missing something. I'd like to have the scoop light from underneath when it's active - anyone have any pointers / links?

I prefer to light my scoops with comet star post LEDs. They are bright, with 4 LEDs in each, and come in several colors. I simply tape the light under the scoop somewhere, and I recommend taping the back of the star post light with electrical tape to insulate it, or it can short by touching something metal. Each of these is like $3-4. Far cheaper than than the $25-30 for many scoop light kits mod companies offer. You will want to buy some different lengths of wire Comet sells. It’s all plug n play, no soldering. They come with different connectors to a power source (alligator clips, or special bulbs). I use Comet lamps and LEDs for extra lighting and many of my scoops. Here are a few scoops I’ve lit that way for under $10. I even went with a color-changing bulb under my Tron scoop. But these are always lit. If you wanted them powered only when the mode called for it, I would consider attaching to the insert bulb that lights up for that scoop, if it’s 6.3v.

I did install a blue Comet star post led under my RBION scoop, but it’s connected to a 6.3v lamp under the pf and is always lit. It’s super bright tho, works great if you are ok with it being always on.

Quoted from Stebel:

You can always wire the star post to the arrow above so the scoop lites when there an an award to collect.

Great idea!

I put a yellow target decal from Earthshaker on my vari-target. Stuck on and then trimmed with an exacto knife. [quoted image]

Clever! I might try something like that. You might want to consider some standup target supports for your tombstone targets. Some tend to lean. There are different versions. Pinball Life has these...

Just got my RBION in yesterday. it's a HUO and in top condition.
Only need to change the coin door lock. What's the part number or what size should I get ?
Is it always 7/8" like on a an older Williams ?

You might want to consider going keyless. I like keyless as it really simplifies access. Just an option. Pinball Life carries them as do other suppliers. The size seems to be standard from late 80s pins to the present.

Quoted from nwpinball:

I've been doing these on all my games. The downside, when I take them to shows I have to swap in real locks, but they save a lot of time at home.

That would be an issue, at shows. Although depending on how many you have to convert, it might not be too bad. I’ve swapped so many locks for keyless it probably takes me a couple minutes to change one. The exception is when the locks aren’t the same length, and the door rattles when closed and latched. Then I have to use a different latch, or bend it slightly to close tightly.

#1105 2 years ago
Quoted from nwpinball:

Yeah, it's a couple minute swap. I do bring usually 6-10 games to the Northwest show and smaller amounts to Emerald City Comicon for the classic arcade, swapping the locks to keyed is just part of the game prep. For the 25 times during the rest of the year when I want to change the volume, a setting, or get into the game, I really like having the quick keyless action. I do it on all my arcade games too.

Very cool you bring your pins to shows.
