Watching Royal Rumble at my location and running a pinball tournament on my WWFRR. Players draw numbers, game will be set to 1 ball. 4 player game, last place is thrown over the top rope and next number enters the fray!

Also having KFC cater the event since they are the sponsor of the Royal Rumble this year!

    Quoted from djreddog:

Anyone going on the Jericho Rock N Cruise?

Me and a group of friends are looking into it, we just got our tickets for NXT Live coming to Indianapolis on March 4th, and we booked the full weekend pass for Wrestlemania that has Hall of Fame tickets and NXT Takeover tickets included, road tripping it from Lafayette to New Orleans together for that one.

We are watching the Royal Rumble next weekend at my location and we are going to do a tournament on Royal Rumble. WWFRR will be set to one ball. Players will draw numbers before the start. #1-4 start off, lowest score is thrown over the top rope, work our way all the way to #30 if we have enough people there for the event. I figured it should be a fun way to include some pinball into a wrestling filled day.

I've been hearing Taker vs. Cena at Mania gets set up tonight, Hogan was the surprise I could think of but that seems to be pretty much not happening. I don't think I would be made if he came back at this point though.

    #102 6 years ago

So who you got winning the rumble?

I'm praying for not Reigns or Cena, but have a bad feeling it will be one of them.

Women should be Aska but strong rumors point towards Rousey showing up to spoil the party. NXT I'm sure will steal the show the night before anyway.

    #105 6 years ago
    Quoted from Rascal_H:

Isn’t it in Philly? Better not be Reigns unless they want the arena burned down.

Yeah that was my thought too, but maybe they are counting on the local Philly fans to be in a good mood since they are headed to the Superbowl. I would love it to be someone a bit more of a surprise. Speaking of which they have announced far fewer participants this year compared to last year which I really appreciate, part of the fun of the rumble is the mystery.

    #113 6 years ago

Yeah, I felt like both Rumble matches delivered this year pretty well, but a lot of the rest of the card was pretty underwhelming and Rousey showing up at the end was just odd, should have just saved her for Raw or Smackdown this week.

    #116 6 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

The Rumble itself was booked VERY well. The Heath Slater recurring gag was pretty funny, and he got to eliminate Sheamus; probably more TV time than Slater's had in a year! And Rey's return... holy crap that was stunning. He must have the best knee surgeon in the world. Up until the last minute I thought it was going to be Cena or Roman... again... but Nakamura winning, and then Asuka... those were outstanding matches. The rest of the card... eh...

Rey coming back made my night, and man that dude looked the best he has since like '97. The final 6 with a staredown of new school vs old school was pretty cool as well. I really think the Philly crowd may have stormed the ring if Reigns went over in the Rumble there again. I'm curious to hear the back story on Mysterio coming back. Basically wondering if it is a actual contract, if it was a one-off, if it was planned for awhile, or if he was brought in as the emergency because the WWE has lost so many cruiserweights in recent months and they are hoping he will jumpstart the division again or something. Regardless he is one of my all time favorites and I thought he looked great during the match hitting everyone he could with the 619!

    #122 6 years ago
    Quoted from lancestorm:

Brock's stiff head punch to Braun was rough to watch. Uncalled for.

Yeah I was really surprised when they replayed that a few times, I figured it was something they would want to cover up a bit.

Only other thing I didn't like was the use of the under the rope hang outside the ring thing done a bit too much during the woman's rumble. A few times I forgot who was actually in the match.

    1 month later
    #136 6 years ago

Yeah she needs to be put with Heyman, its the only thing that makes sense as she can't talk.

I got to go to the NXT show in Indianapolis the other night and catch Johnny Wrestling's last match against Andrade Cien Almas and they tore the place down, a great show. The only disappointment was no Purple Rainmaker from Velveteen Dream and no elbow drop from Kairi Sane, oh well, maybe next time. I should get to see both at NXT Takeover New Orleans in 1 month!

    #139 6 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Well Brock appears to be leaving - she would explode if they put her with Heyman. He'll teach her a ton too

Yep I figured they run some angle where Heyman basically ditches Brock for the newest legit fighter in the company and that is Brock's exit plan then.

    #142 6 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

The angle they are running where Brock is half-assing and no-showing house shows is interesting; it’s at least semi-creative for once. I do not think it will get Roman more over. But when Brock actually leaves maybe that allows AJ to come in as the top heel. Or SOMETHING. They are wasting so much amazing talent between Finn, AJ, even KO. And Braun Strowman is a great attraction - they really should keep him doing funny stuff and lighten up a touch on the ridiculous feats of strength. He’s getting over huge, because him and Elias (what happened to Cena?!) have great chemistry. I still think he’s green but he will get there
My son watched the end of elimination chamber last night, and he is starting to sour on Ronan a bit; he could hear the boos. he thinks for a minute and says “Roman should go up and say I’m sorry I ended the undertsker’s career, I didn’t want to. I wanted him to stay forever too. But Brock beat him first, and I am going to make sure Brock never comes back around here again. I’m dedicating my match to Undertaker.”
I almost choked on my dinner. He’s 8, that is genius.

That is awesome, and Roman is great worker, but the way he is booked he is always going to struggle, I honestly think the whole company will as long as VKM is running the show and not HHH. Look how great NXT's stories are booked compared to anything on the main roster. And agree so many talented guys and gals all over the company, but they rarely give us a reason to care about their matches now.

Is anybody going to Wrestlemania 35 next year in New Jersey (NYC)?

After going last year and scheduled to go this year, I think I will take next year off.

    Quoted from mkecasey:

I anticipate a Shane turn as well. I think Owens/Zayn need to win so that they are hired back. (Unless the plan is to have Raw hire them). But turning Bryan heel would be stupid. So Shane turning seems logical.
I think you can put money down that Sasha and Bayley are going to finally blow up. Hoping it is Sasha who is the heel.
AJ and Nakamura shouldn't close. Don't get me wrong, it is one of the matches that I am most excited for. But I think WWE is giving this match to the die hards and we should be happy about that. I think it makes sense to close with Cena/Taker or Brock/Reigns. People who are known to people outside of WWE.
I think the Usos vs New Day vs Bludgeon Brothers is going to be a really great match.
NXT Takeover is also going to have some amazing matches.

Haha I was actually hoping for the Bryan heal turn leading to the victory for Owens and Zayn and they form some sort of trio to terrorize smackdown for awhile. I'm at work today for 5.5 more hours and then hitting the road with some friends to drive down to the show. We have about a 14 hour trip. I can't wait for the food and culture of the city on top of it being filled with so much great wrestling all weekend! I'm pretty much useless at work for the day due to my excitement to get out of here.

    #162 6 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I wouldn't mind heel Daniel Bryan, personally. When I said it would be stupid, I was thinking from a business standpoint. DB merch for the next year is going to be like printing cash. There is more money in him being a face at the moment.

Yeah totally makes sense, but he could also be an Austin like character in a heel that sells a shit ton of stuff. I think no matter what he is going to be money. Him turning heel would be too fun though and vince wouldn't like that I assume, he only seems to want to crush what fans want. Regardless very cool to see him again. After being at last years mania and saying goodbye to the undertaker I was really hoping he wouldn't be back, but I think the return of the biker gimmick is inevitable at this point. Should be fun regardless.

    #167 6 years ago

I really hope they just let him win the titles alone, it would be something fresh at least.

The we want Nicholaus cheers during the horrible main event were awesome.

    #184 6 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

This is genius. Braun is the next Roman (edit: I mean he’s next on top and the big kid magnet), and he should be. He’s way more fun, has a GREAT sense of humor (Brains Strowman, plus all the appearances he did on Instagram riding roller coasters, his podcast with Jericho and Gallows/Anderson. Now there’s a great stable for ya)
My son had to go to bed before the Nicholas match but I can’t wait to show him

Them relinquishing the titles on Raw last night was hilarious.

    #186 6 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

Nicholas has a scheduling conflict. He is still in the 4th grade.

The sadness that Braun delivered that line with was great.

    #187 6 years ago

Also the cheers for Nicholaus during the main event, I get it, a bit rude when two dudes are out there busting their butts, but man I really hope Vince took note of just how badly people do not want to see Reigns and Lesnar anymore. And Joe's promos on Raw destroying Roman was great and made me want to see him destroy him in the ring.

    #190 6 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

I really feel like that wasn’t helped by the length of the show. 7 hours?! The arena is waaay dead by hour 4. Just because Vince doesn’t sleep doesn’t mean crowds don’t get tired. They were quiet for most of AJ/Shinsuke which shocked me. Draft next.

Yeah I think there was genuine disappointment Shinske and AJ weren't going on last, and then they did the slower paced almost Strong Style match, my guess is they did that though with the heel turn because they are building a series instead of a one off, I'm hoping we see the match 2 more times culminating at Summer Slam, at least then it makes sense to me how they put the Mania match together.

    #192 6 years ago
    Quoted from TomGWI:

Tommy how did you think WM34 co pared to going to WM33 with regards to the event/Matches. Which was better?

Hmmmm...I would probably say 33 was a little better overall. Perhaps because it was my first in person. Hard to top the crowd feel of Daniel Bryan coming back at this one, but we also had what we thought was the Undertaker's last ride at 33 so they are very comparable moments as far as the feel goes. The Superdome was amazing for its size, and the stage and screen setups were really cool, but the stadium was a disaster in the concourse area, they ran out of water in my area for the last 4 hours of the show, also most food and sodas as well, lines for restrooms were insane and just getting to and from your seats was awful. I missed the entire Usos/Bludgeon/New Day match waiting in line for a restroom. It was like the arena was completely unprepared which makes no sense to them hosting just 4 years ago. I had a much better time at the stadium last year and even at NXT the night before. Speaking of which NXT killed Mania by far, I don't think any of the Mania matches outside of maybe Flair v. Asuka came close to matching them at all. I did go with a few more friends this year, and being in the city of New Orleans was awesome, I hadn't been back since the year before Katrina hit. Also the crowd's pure displeasure with that main event really left a bitter taste in your mouth on the way out, oh and the Jinder victory when all I heard all weekend everywhere I went from Independent shows to Bourbon Street to NXT, to Mania was Rusev Day chants.....most over thing of the weekend for sure and Vince just seems to hate the guy for cutting his hair...it makes no sense. So again overall probably give the slight advantage to 33 for me. Already decided we aren't going to next year's Mania, but we are going to do NXT, it is simply that much better of a product right now.

Also, a huge shout out to Joey Janela's Spring Break 2 as an awesome and fun Independent show that we checked out on Friday night and it didn't end until almost 4 AM.

    #194 6 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I'm planning to go next year since I'm pretty close to NYC/NJ. But the thought of sitting in a stadium for 7 hours sounds like a nightmare. Especially if next year gets crap weather, it could get pretty cold by the time midnight rolls around.

Yeah, it certainly does get a bit tiring. I was glad they didn't have any music acts in the middle of the show this year.

    #199 6 years ago

I’m really curious how much wwe is making in that show.

    #203 6 years ago
    Quoted from spiroagnew:

Tommy, you must be all wrestled out for the time being. It was an exhausting slog watching it at home. I can only imagine it made for a really long day live and in person.

Haha man, you have no idea. We literally drove through the night on Thursday, called when about an hour out from New Orleans to make sure we could check in early and they said yes. We got to the hotel around 9 AM and they said nope not ready haha, awesome. So we went to our other hotel (we had multiple groups with us), two of them went to sleep and me and my buddy headed to Bourbon Street for the day. Came back to the hotel around 5 PM to shower and head off to our first independent show of the weekend that started at 7PM and ran until about 10:30, that was going to be followed by an hour break and then Joey Janela's Spring Break 2 which started at 11:55PM, the main event of that show went on at about 3:30 AM, we got back into downtown around 4:30 AM and headed back to Bourbon Street for a few more hours before finally taking a nap and heading to Axxess at 8 AM. Then you are absolutely right, I don't think Wrestlemania stood a chance after that amazing Takeover. The greatest Royal Rumble thing just seems so odd, but like we have all stated I'm sure its a nice payday for the boys and girls and company overall. And yes please for the love of god give Becky Lynch something relevant to do, she is so talented and so beautiful, I just don't get how she isn't pushed more. I do think Charlotte and Asuka stole the show for me followed the by IC Triple Threat match.....not getting a Balor Demon entrance was my biggest let down of the weekend and also gave away the finish of the match for me because then he could take the loss knowing Miz would want some time off to be with his newborn, and if he came out as Demon he was going to win, if not it would be all Rollins. I think between Thursday night when we left and Monday morning when we started the drive back I only got about 7-8 hours of sleep, my buddy I was staying with got even less as after NXT although we went out for several more hours I at least took a nap before Axxess that morning, he just stayed out all night at bars and came back at 8 AM when we had to head over to that again. I haven't gone back and watched Mania on the next work yet but I will get to it eventually as I do miss the commentary aspect when I am at a live event.

I want to watch it on one of the streaming services just to see if I missed much. I missed the entire battle royal in the merch line. Only show I've ever been to where it was easier to get beer than merchandise. We waited about an hour and the line was way longer when we left so I can't imagine how long some people waited.

    #219 5 years ago
    Quoted from catboxer:

I've been to a handful of indie shows and I enjoyed them, but after watching All In, it made this weeks RAW almost unwatchable. Its been a cell phone checking snore-fest for years, but that juxtaposition drove it home. I think I am going to stop watching the weekly shows and stick to the PPVs. They play 10,000 recaps during RAW (Here's what happened 2 minutes ago!!) and those are all replayed on the PPV to get you back up to speed.

That was the general consensus from the group I went with too. We are thinking about a 12 hour trip to the NWA 70th anniversary show next month.

Yeah I’m betting he is 3-5 million for this event.

I was subscribed to Network since day 1, cancelled for first time last week. Taking a break, wwe is so stale and I was getting frustrated. MAY check back around royal rumble but for now I am stepping away. I made sure to mention in my last wwe survey

I just did the same thing. Trying out Ring of Honor Club instead.

    #234 5 years ago

Anyone else going to the NWA 70th Anniversary show in Nashville on the 21st?

Do to some miscommunication between me and my wrestling buddies we ended up with 8 General Admission tickets instead of just 4, so if anyone is interested in the extra 4 tickets just let get ahold of me.

    #237 5 years ago

Plus you have a 20 minute video package replaying everything we just saw on raw or smackdown a few nights beforehand between every match.

Cody va Willie Mac on ROH for the NWA Title was a good match posted to YouTube yesterday. If you haven’t subscribed to the NWA YouTube channel I suggest you give it a shot. Free for starters and it is updated regularly and they are really putting out some good stuff.

There was a pretty entertaining interview with Billy Corgan on the latest episode of The Masked Man Show. Talks a lot about the 24/7 direction that wrestling is going, plans for NWA, and the business side of the industry.

    Got a link?

Just got a text about it. Crazy

    #250 5 years ago

Best raw ending in a long while.

    #252 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

What happened? I missed the last 20 minutes

Seth and Dean won tag titles then Dean turned. Brutally beat Seth. Crowd was stunned and silent.

    #254 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

    Wtf
After that roman announcement? Will be interesting to see how this plays out

Yeah worth looking up video. Most shocked crowd I’ve seen since Brock went over Taker at mania.

    #258 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I think it was a combination of people not expecting it due to Roman's announcement AND the fact that they just won the belts. A lot of people suspected have picked up on WWE teasing us with a Dean turn, but didn't expect them to become tag team champions and have it happen immediately after winning them.

Yep same here. My buddies and I watching said okay well obviously next week Seth and Dean are going to be singles guy's again because that is what happens when the Shield isn't at full strength. Then that tag match was obviously very good and they won it! We were like wow guess they are staying together this time, and then the turn. It was well done.

And yes the WWE does have a ton of the talent out there, but I've been getting more and more into ROH and NWA stuff. What they are doing has been great. My friends and I made a 12 hour round trip this weekend to see NWA 70th Anniversary show because we wanted to see the rematch between Cody and Aldis. It was really great. New Japan has a ton of great talent as well. With all the streaming services now it is much easier to see the other options out there besides WWE. Last night was the first Raw I've watched in a few months, and I still missed the first half. I was sleeping at home when a friend called about the news of Roman so I figured I should at least turn it on and see how the show finished out. I'm glad I did. Anyway check out NWA on youtube and even Being the Elite if you want a different take on the wrestling business in 2018, both deliver regular content, way less fluff, and some really great wrestling. Cody vs. Willie Mack from like a week or two ago was a great match.

    #260 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Interesting, I didn’t watch the whole show but it sounds like this was one of the 10 “good” RAWs of the year! We attended Smackdown 1000 last week and that was a truly awesome show - I’m not sure what ended up on tv but man they went all out, and there were 5 matches after the show went off the air, all of which were killer, (Becky /Charlotte was the main event, which was really good for a dark match). They also did 2 mixed match challenge matches which were great.
Really good suggestions - I’ve followed NJPW for a while now, but getting to actually watch it lately is a whole different experience. I’ve not been able to find ROH but I’ll try harder.

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSHCTJS2P4Hvu_reLKtiT6g/playlists

Lots of good stuff here. Just a different way to present pro wrestling, I think it is a bit more modern in presentation style while remaining a bit truer to pro wrestling's origins.

    #263 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Awesome, thanks!! I don’t mind the WWE soap opera most of the time, but the creative has been SO BAD for quite a while, i am basically not watching RAW any more and only watch smackdown occasionally so we can actually see some wrestling. This seems like it will help with that!

Yep it has been the cure for me. NXT helps a lot too as it is much more wrestling focused and only an hour per week.

    #266 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Yep that’s exactly what I’m doing. I am on the fence about cancelling the Network though, yes because of Crown royal . I started out as a journalist so not to bring politics in, but it really bothers me that US companies are taking SO much money from that regime, and that Linda is part of the president’s cabinet. That does not seem right. But ae’ll See what happens with the sanctions. Anyway, sorry - wrestling:

Yeah that totally makes sense. Very interesting to see what happens with that show at this point. I've heard the latest rumor is they are offering Stone Cold upwards of $10 million to make a comeback match. It is like they have become a real-life version of the Million Dollar Man.

    #269 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

LOL. 1) that is hilarious, and 2) I can’t see Stone Cold coming back; he always says he’s done on his podcasts - (although that pop at Raw 25...)

HBK said the same thing, then enough money was laid down. I can't even blame the guys, they put their bodies through so much for so many years for so little, hard to knock them for suddenly having an easy pay day.

Yep needs a little refinement but that is awesome! Make the areas I circled clippers pointed at each other instead of just the symbol it is now, and I'd stick with a skull in the middle, flippers through the mouth instead of guns, and pinballs instead of bullets. Love it though!

    #277 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I'll make those changes sometime this week when I have some downtime again. And what do you mean by clippers?

I mean flippers and I just don’t type well haha.

    #281 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I took some of your advice. I brought back the skull, intersected the flippers below it. I played around with using multiple balls to replace the bullets but it seemed a little crowded. I replaced the arrows with pop bumpers since I didn't want to use flippers in multiple spots. But I like it, I think I'm going to print one. I suspect if I wear it to pinball shows it'll only make sense to a very small group of people, but that's fine by me.
    [quoted image]

Definitely do Takeover, it has surpassed Mania for me that last two years in person. This weekends Takeover was so much better than the main roster, the stories actually make you care.

    Quoted from mkecasey:

Raw was kind of a turd last night

I just don't get Vince's hatred of Finn Balor, it drives me insane how badly he has killed momentum for up and coming NXT guys the last few years, and how he insists on pushing people the crowd doesn't care for. My group of friends and I have all started moving to watch independent stuff via Fite app and ROH and NJPW, they at least aren't terrible at telling stories. Raw was on at the bar last night and I only stopped playing pinball to watch some of Finn and just got to see him get destroyed by 3 of the biggest guys on the roster for no reason, and Rollins vs Ziggler for what feels like the 8th week in a row.

    #290 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I took some of your advice. I brought back the skull, intersected the flippers below it. I played around with using multiple balls to replace the bullets but it seemed a little crowded. I replaced the arrows with pop bumpers since I didn't want to use flippers in multiple spots. But I like it, I think I'm going to print one. I suspect if I wear it to pinball shows it'll only make sense to a very small group of people, but that's fine by me.
    [quoted image]

So the bar where I operate pins and we watch wrestling legit just designed something very similar without me knowing as a surprise. It has the bars name "North End Pub" instead of pinball club, but then a skull, flippers, and pinballs to look like bullet club logo. Anyway let me know if you want one, once they get in I'll score some.

Heard rumor today of Netflix. To me that would be genius. Still excited to see what they offer regardless just because it’s at least another option. Also anyone else watch Wrestle Kingdom? See New Japan is coming to Nashville soon, may have to make another drive down like we did for the NWA 70th anniversary show.

    #304 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

That would be brilliant - Lucha Underground proved the more traditional episodic stuff works. I’m on the fence about Kenny. He should prob stick with AEW. In WWE he’d get lost or neutered.

    Agreed

Mean Gene and Bobby The Brain both gone within a year of each other though is sadly fitting, man those guys are the voices of a lot of my youth.

    Quoted from lancestorm:

Anyone host parties and make a points sheet choosing winners to see who guesses best? I’d like to steal than setup my own

I'll see if I can get the one my location uses. We do the random buy in and pick entrant numbers from a hat, and then we also do a prediction sheet as well. This year we are running our own tournament on Royal Rumble Pinball Machine, drawing numbers, 1 & 2 start it out, and then after that we draw a number 1-3, that is how many entrants enter next, then we draw again to see how many get eliminated from that game, making our way down the list.

    #313 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I didn't do it this year due to a lack of time. In years past I've ran a Royal Rumble pool where I sell spots for $5 or $10. Then I'll go on Facebook Live and draw numbers. That way somebody who doesn't watch any wrestling has a chance to win because you are randomly selecting numbers and you don't know who will come out at any given spot. It's actually a lot of fun because you'll find yourself rooting for people you wouldn't otherwise cheer for. I'll probably do it again next year but this year just creeped up on me.
I think we're having another couple over to our place to watch it. I don't have any games planned but I'll be serving some wrestling themed food. So far I'm planning to do Over-the-top garlic ropes, Macho Man's Macho Nachos, Daniel Br-yams (sweet potato fries w/ aioli), Zack Ryder's Sliders (a TBD slider sandwich), Souplex City (soup), Cesaro Salad (caesar salad), Dolph Twizzlers, Sasha Franks (hot dogs). Beverages will include Bruiserweight Brews (beer), Coffee Kingston, Booker Tea, and some Triple H2o bottles.

Did you see the WWE has a cookbook coming out soon?

    #323 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

WWE needs to stop with these 7 hour shows, it's ridiculous. I don't think I'll have any other Royal Rumble parties going forward. The event is too long to keep casual viewers engaged. That was what I used to love about the Rumble, I could have people over who don't watch at all or haven't watched in years and they would get invested in the Rumble match itself. But people who aren't fans do not want to stay over until midnight on a Sunday night to see the Royal Rumble.

Yeah I'm sitting here exhausted at work today, that was a long long show, and it still couldn't top NXT from the night before. I don't know what they tell those NXT guys before every takeover but they just straight up kill it.

    #326 5 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I don't think they have to tell them anything. I bet each one of them treats it as a job interview for the main roster. They know if they look amazing in front of a large crowd at Takeover, they'll get noticed by the people backstage who decide who is going up to the main roster.

And then largely get buried once on the main roster it seems. I was really hoping for a huge surprise win from Aleister Black in the Rumble so when he entered I got pretty excited for a bit. It would be nice for Rumble to be used as a launching pad for someone instead of a platform to maintain the guys that have been at the top for awhile.

Hell yeah we did and it was awesome. The pace those guys had in that match was amazing.

I went to ALL IN last fall, and got signed up for the Double or Nothing ticket notifications last night. Going to skip Wrestlemania this year and instead head out to Vegas for the first time to check out what AEW is all about. I'm looking very forward to seeing what their TV deal is. Still really wish they would do what I read as a suggestion somewhere and that is just going to Netflix.

I did the last two Manias but skipping this year and doing Double or Nothing out in Vegas instead. Looking very forward to watching NXT and well having Wrestlemania on while hanging with friends...if they screw over Kofi though...that place may riot. Should be a good time, we are having a timed matchplay event before the big show starts on Sunday.

Anyone else going to Double or Nothing? What about G1 in Dallas?

I'm actually pumped for the Cody vs. Dustin match as much as anything else. It really interests me how AEW is building this card basically through a 10-minute weekly youtube video and WWE has 5 hours of tv per week to build stories and can't do it.

    #360 5 years ago

This is the latest video in the series just in case no one else knows what I'm referencing.

    #362 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

I think that’s exactly the problem - you can’t tell wrestling stories with 5 hours of tv, but only using 20 people or so.
They have SO many people on the roster that aren’t being utilised well, or even at ALL! there are no squash matches which helped get big monsters over without requiring much of them, and there are title defences almost every night which seems like too much to me.
I think I’m way more interested in AEW now, because of the promise of what could be, instead of the disappointment of what is. WWE is doing the right thing bringing back some of the old names to help write and produce the show

Yeah for sure. It certainly seems to me they have just lost the art of story telling. Or they try to move story telling at the modern pace of today's twitter world and they just go so fast they don't have time to build.

AEW using a life long brotherly feud is certainly an advantage, but even with the Young Bucks vs Lucha Bros they are smart enough to present the match as a battle that is 3+ years in the making, not the actual 3 month build up it is, and they are able to do all of this without having the guys interact all that much...sometimes less is more.

If WWE focused on maybe 5 stories overall, and then in between just filled up the Raw and Smackdown with good wrestling matches by any member of their huge roster they would be doing so much more.

Woof. What a terrible week of WWE.

    Wildcard

    #375 4 years ago

Yeah I'm looking very forward to seeing what AEW has to offer. At my location we watch Monday Night Raw every week, and typically have parties for the major shows.

Lately Monday night has turned into just hanging out and playing pinball with WWE on in the background but we have started to watch more independent shows, ROH, and NWA, as well as New Japan when we actually want to see wrestling.

Is anyone else going out to Double or Nothing? I get in Friday morning and we are planning to check out a bit of Starcast Friday, Saturday the show, and Sunday the pinball hall of fame.

    #377 4 years ago
    Quoted from mkecasey:

I don't think AEW is going to put WWE to rest. WWE is making more money than ever before despite the declining ratings. My realistic hope is that the competition from AEW forces WWE to change for the better. From the talent side of thing, I think we'll continue to see people leave WWE for AEW as long as AEW can continue to pay close to (or more) than WWE is paying. I know some of the guys in AEW are getting paid WWE type money for far less dates.
I don't think AEW will go head to head with WWE on the same night of TV. Cody Rhodes has said multiple times that they want to co-exist with WWE and aren't trying to beat them. With that mindset, it would be foolish for them to broadcast on the same night in the way WCW did.
At the end of the day, I'm hoping for healthy competition because I think there is enough room for both to be successful.

Yeah I agree, I don't think that any one will eliminate WWE as long as they want to exist. But I want to watch good wrestling matches and storytelling. The Cody vs. Dustin story has me so intrigued. Lucha Bros vs. Young Bucks will tear the house down, and the battle royal format is unique and makes sense based on the show name, location, and future opportunity....unlike lets say the fucking WILDCARD rule in WWE now...it is like they are trying to see how shitty they can make their television product and have us still tune in. I'm starting to think cancelling the network is the way to go.

    #381 4 years ago

I followed suit and canceled my WWE Network subscription. Just not worth having at this point. NXT is on Hulu and I already have that at $.99 per month and it was about the only thing I watched regularly on the network. No more money to WWE until shit gets better.

    #383 4 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Yep. They even made me not care about vintage matches! End of

Yep agreed. I'll sign up with some burner email for a free month if there is ever a time that I actually need to see something on there. For now back to enjoying companies that are putting on good matches and stories. MLW has been quite entertaining if you guys haven't checked it out I think it is worth a watch. The New Hart Foundation down there are entertaining as hell.

    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Thx for the reminder! I’ve heard Court(sp?) Bauer on a bunch of

I got sucked in by reading an article about the life of Teddy Hart after seeing him on an indie show at Wrestlemania 34. It was pretty interesting and the stuff him and little davey boy and pillman jr are doing is quite entertaining. Check out the moonsaulting cat if you haven't seen it. Silly but entertaining in a good way which is what wrestling should be to me.

    #413 4 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

I missed it, but was this the first episode, that was only 1 hour while they gear up for the 2-hour show?

Yeah the first hour was on USA, then the second hour was on the network still and I guess they had a lot of technical difficulties with the network transition. Sounded like some great matches (which we have come to accept as the norm for NXT) and some very cool stories with Imperium vs Undisputed Era being teased for War Games it seems which is only 2 months away. I've already got my tickets for that one and looking very forward to it.

As for AEW, I'm psyched for it's TNT debut. I'll catch up on NXT via the network as I have for the past 5-6 years now when I have the time, but as far as Wednesday night graps go I'll be tuned in to see what those guys are doing on TNT. I've been to All In, Double or Nothing, All Out, and I have my tickets booked for their Indianapolis and Chicago shows in November. The show and crowd at those events is just awesome. Anyway, great time to be a fan of both wrestling and pinball with competition all over the place bringing out the best in everyone.

    #415 4 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

I’ve PPV’d all the AEW events, and I’m really psyched about what they’re doing - I do hope they tone down some of the really dumb stuff. I think it’s super interesting how they’re doing so much to be inclusive, although I’m confused about how they are booking Nyla Rose (shouldn’t she just be a monster heel /special attraction?). On the goofy stuff, I am starting to come around to Jim Cornette’s point of view. I know kayfabe is dead, but it’s not like they have to shove it in our face.
Anyway, it’s awesome that WWE is finally getting nervous, hopefully they turn the ship around as well

Yeah I get that viewpoint at times as well, but watching Orange Cassidy in person as I have at a few events, his whole gimmick is amazing, and his athleticism is through the roof to do the stuff he does with his hands in his pockets haha. Anyway like you said seems the competition is making everyone raise the bar. MLW is also putting on some really good stuff if you haven't checked them out. Jacob Fatu and the Von Erichs plus the Hart Foundation 2.0, and who knows Impact never dies maybe they will even get revitalized on a new network.

    #418 4 years ago
    Quoted from DBLM:

NXT was incredibly inclusive tonight and in most cases. You had Dream, Mia Yim, Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, Lio Rush, Street Prophets and a variety of other folks on the show. It did not feel like at typical Raw.
Regarding AEW and the dumb stuff, I think that is going to sink or swim them. There is no doubt they have unbelievable talent. It is going to be curious as to if the very insider stuff plays well with a casual audience or not. It could be a generational thing as well. I am 42, so I grew up on WWF and Jim Crockett Promotions. I loved ECW, which had some schtick-yness to it, but for whatever reason the Elite stuff has not hit the mark with me. I will definitely try the show. Them having Arn and Tully on the show is a win in my book!
I know that this is a bias, but I really like seeing the big guys who can go work. Brock, Walter, Keith Lee, Dijak, Brian Cage, Jeff Cobb, etc. Growing up, Sid Vicious was the man, even though he could not work. He had attitude and and an aura to him. Wrestling is more about skill now than at any other time but I still think a good big man is an attraction. Do you think AEW will try to get any big guys or if that will even matter to them?

Haha I always liked the small guys, but I imagine at some point they will bring in some big guys as long as they can work. That really seems to be the main thing in AEW to me. I do agree though, Sid made you want to watch even though the dude wasn't a great worker. However, to this day when I hear his name the only thing I see is the clip of him snapping his leg.

LOVED IT! I had a few friends there sending me updates. I can't believe you didn't stay for Jurassic Express! Those guys are awesome. The whole show delivered for me, top to bottom enjoyed it. We had it on at my location and about 20 people showed up to watch and it felt like a party the whole time. The electricity and energy, I know exactly what you mean man, I was at each of their major Events so far ALL In, Double or Nothing, and All Out and the vibe is just different from other shows I've been to and that includes two Wrestlemania's (Orlando and New Orleans). NXT also put on a hell of a show, and this competition is just great for wrestling fans.

I had heard that Jake Hager (Swagger) was likely going to be there so his appearance wasn't that big of a surprise, but I agree he looked good in how he did it. I'm curious if it will be a stable or not with Jericho but definitely seems to be a connection. It was also amazing to see how big he looked in the ring with those guys. You forget how large some of the WWE guys are because they are all that size, and then they get in the ring with average-sized humans and he looks like a giant.

What a time to be a wrestling fan. Don't forget we have NWA doing weekly TV on Tuesdays now as well, and MLW has been putting on great shows too, and ROH and Impact seem to be making lots of positive changes as well. So much talent out there. You can literally be a wrestling fan 7 days a week right now and catch something good. There are more wrestling companies than pinball companies now haha, my two favorite hobbies are booming and it is awesome.

I've got tickets for their Dynamite shows coming up next month in Indianapolis and Chicago, looking very forward to those trips.

Also, it was great to hear JR and Tony Schiavone back together, I also enjoy Excalibur, but man those voices paired up was like a time machine.

Busted Open Radio on SiriusXM is a good show if no one else out there listens (I don't do the full show just the podcast summary on my commute home) and Tommy Dreamer yesterday did an amazing job of attributing all of this resurgence to Dusty Rhodes, it was really interesting to see how he was able to show that Dusty basically has had a hand in all of these companies and how much influence he has had on the pro wrestling industry as a whole. Great stuff!

    Quoted from DBLM:

Watched both shows. I think NXT had far better wrestling and AEW looked better as a show. Some nonsensical stuff on both but overall a good night. I think NXT needs to get out of Full Sail but we shall see. Finn was a bigger surprise than Jake. The AEW folks with the exception of MJF still don’t do much for me. MJF is going to be a star! For all of this, #ImwithNXT.

Balor coming back is huge for NXT, but I also feel bad for Balor. Love his character and in ring work, but man I just feel like he got mishandled after his injury on the main roster. I hope if he is back in NXT it is because it's what he wanted for himself.

    #440 4 years ago
    Quoted from djreddog:

All AEW needs to do now is sign the Briscoe Brothers.

Haha man I don't know if anyone can sign those guys. They are either amazing at their jobs as characters (in ring work is undeniable) or they are legit at least partially crazy/unhinged. That may be how Jon Moxley plays his character but the Briscoe Brothers have me convinced they would murder someone without blinking an eye.

    AEW Dynamite time!!

    #448 4 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

DAMN. I didn’t watch NXT but online polling says they blew it away. Can’t believe the Bucks lost! That legit shocked me. Love what they are doing with Mox in that he wouldn’t attack Kenny on the ground. That will eventually lead to a great face turn. Let him sell some shirts!
Jericho continues to teach a master class. I know some people are down on him as a self-promoter, and he does marvel a bit that he’s able to do Fozzy and AEW still, but it’s because he’s busting his ass. He’s loving every second and he works harder than any dude I know. (Except me, haha)

Yeah that was a hell of a tag match to open the show, great false finishes before the big upset. The chaos to end the show, the MJF turn teases, man they are making me excited to be a wrestling fan again. I also enjoyed their AEW Dark show on Youtube as well as the NWA Power show. Also credit to the Darby skateboard ramp attack, that is something I've certainly never seen before.

    #450 4 years ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

We watch AEW Dark yesterday too, which I thought is a novel idea to maximize all their matches - and I definitely enjoyed the Jurassic Express fiasco (who the hell is that tiny guy?!?). It’s alwyas good to see the Fallen Angel. And I’m a huge Schiavone mark so every time I hear his voice it’s like “ding! Wrestling time!” I’m not sold on Darby Allin though.. not sure what it is but he seems a little too much of a spaz. Definitely belonged on the dark show. Maybe he just had an off night though, I’m not that familiar with him

He is small and quick, and his movement in the ring is unique but I think he is quite talented. Definitely has a little of the "It" factor to me, his match with Cody at one of their shows over the summer was really good.

I'm also with you hearing Schiavone and JR together makes it feel like wrestling. I listened to Tony's podcast yesterday about his return to commentary and it was cool to hear how much he missed it and appreciated being there, you could really hear it in his voice what it meant to him.

Power has been my favorite since it launched. Partly because of the retro vibe. Partly because it is only about an hour. Party because of their youtube platform I can access it whenever I want. I went to the NWA 70th anniversary show last year and it was honestly one of my best wrestling experiences at a live show. Cody and Aldis tore the house down. What they have been doing on there has been super entertaining. I definitely encourage people to give it a shot.

Austin Idle commercials, as well as their other products, have killed it.

I’ve loved AEW. I have a weekly show that is actually giving me stories that I care enough to tune in to week after week. WWE hasn’t done that for me in quite some time. Not saying the wrestling is flawless in AEW, but I enjoy the hell out of it.
