A few of us are trying to start a pinball league in the Triangle. If anyone is interested in participating and/or hosting, please let me know.

    #2 11 years ago

I drove the 1:45 to the greensboro tourney. Couldnt go any further for a league. Good luck with it!

    #3 11 years ago

I am in Greensboro and would like to have a local league, I know we have the tournaments at The Lost Ark bit other than that I am unaware of any other local group. Update
    me!

    #4 11 years ago

I'd like to connect with other pinheads in the area, but, to be brutally honest, I would be no competition in a tourney. I have fun with my machines, but I am a mediocre player.

Sent you a pm at bash

+1000. Would love to have one. The tournaments are cool but a league would be great. I know at one time the boys (Astrodan and NeoAce) had talked about it. I'm not that good but a league would be nice so me and my son can play. Let me know what I can do to make this happen.

Triadwatch, are you talking to me, I do not remember any invitation to an event until I heard about one but it was after the fact when I seen some emails going around about ow much fun it was. Let all get together and play some silver ball and talk more pinball stuff. Thanks

    #8 11 years ago

too bad there are no more arcades in the triad

    #9 11 years ago

I don't think skill level matters. We can always do something to make the teams fair.

    #10 11 years ago

I agree to that, let's get together and just play alot of pinball and talk the talk. Have fun....life is too short!

    #11 11 years ago

Sounds fun goodluck with that. Anyone go to college at East Carolina. I grad there in 2003. Also lived In knightdale(east Raleigh). And in Wilmington after college. Love NC... And the women!

Yea thats right just do a A,B,C,D player like in golf tourneys.

Good thing. I feel sorry for the team that gets stuck with me!

I'll ask my son if he'd be interested, too.

    #14 11 years ago

I'm interested but based in Wilmington so I'd be more inclined to hit a weekend tournament than a weeknight league. G'boro is too far for me - 8 hour round trip - but the triangle is doable.

    #15 11 years ago

Hey Jimmy, I drive back and forth to Wilmington alot and I do it in a hair over three hours one way.

    #16 11 years ago

Guess I need to mount up and go to a lost ark tournament. Give you guys a taste of my awesome D player skills!

Full disclosure: I've never played in any tournament, so I may well not even rate the D list.

    #17 11 years ago

No worries there are plenty of us so so players

    #18 11 years ago

I'm interested in meeting up with others. I've never competed in a tourney and I'm not a very competitive player, but definitely interested in playing some pinball and talking about pins.

    #19 11 years ago

    Interested and could host

    #20 11 years ago

My son will play as well. Can we get an email list together. I also put a similar post on the bash. My email is [email protected].

    #21 11 years ago

I am definitely interested. I played for a few years in the Ohio Pinball League and it was really fun. League is more about the social aspect...and learning tips on how to get better. Tourneys dont always have the same impact. I think people would be surprised at how much better you will get by playing in a league...even if that isnt your primary goal. Plus, its a hell of a lot of fun!

    #22 11 years ago

My son and I are in as well! We're really excited and very hopeful this is going to work out. To that end, I've made a few successful contacts and have made some early progress, stuff that others here and on Pinball Bash might be interested to know about...

I've done some talking to the folks at Fat Daddy's, and am going there today to meet with the route guy for Thorp out of Rocky Mount, whose machines are in the basement there.

Fat Daddy's has agreed to let me negotiate with the operator to have the current three games there removed and replaced with shopped games, and up to three additional games, fire code permitting.

The management at Fat Daddy's said they would welcome regular league meetings downstairs there, and would allow us to publicize meeting days/times upstairs and in the bar/game area downstairs. Other than Fat Daddy's, Frankie's is the only other public location with at least 3 pins that I'm aware of--I would love to be told that I'm misinformed!

I spoke with the management at Frankie's as well, and they also said they'd welcome us, offering the advice to meet on a weeknight--they said it's dead there at that time, and games are available on a "first come, first served basis"--I asked if they would be offended if this group of people showed up and seemed to be monopolizing a few of their games. I didn't talk to them about their lineup, but will the next time I'm in there.

I left a voice mail for local pinball celebrity Orin Day, but have not heard back from him yet--I certainly hope to! I also contacted the person who ran the former Triangle Pinball League, and though he can't be involved now because of scheduling, he offered moral and logistics support.

Let's get together and play/talk pinball! Maybe a weekend daytime at Fat Daddy's sometime between now and the new year, if not to do anything other than see who shows up and talk about what we'd like to do? Of course, there's a couple of games there, too...

    #23 11 years ago

Thanks for the good work! I haven't been to Fat Daddy's. What pins are at Frankie's?

    #24 11 years ago

Frankie's has Shrek, Iron Man, Avatar, and Tron. Obviously these are all fairly new games, and all are in good shape and usually running, though I've been there when Iron Man was down because of card reader issues.

Surprising in a place like this, but I've also had to ask the management to come windex the playfield glasses because of all the dust bunnies. No joke. I'm a very tolerant person, but it was really that far out of control.

    #25 11 years ago

Thanks, again. I'll have to go there someday to play the Tron. Good to know there is something a little closer than Lost Ark that has a few pins.

    #26 11 years ago

    Dan,

Awesome work. Let us know how that goes. I have been to Fat Daddy's when they have had football league ans a fantasy draft. They seem to welcome those kind of things. There seems to be interest from 8-12 players at least. I would be up for an informal meet at Fat Daddy's or Frankies. How about next weekend?

    #27 11 years ago

I'm up for a meeting anytime folks think they can make it!

So here's the update. I was able to meet the tech from Thorpe today at Fat Daddy's and explained to him what we were thinking and hoping. He was very receptive and said he would take what he'd heard from me back to his management, and if they agreed to help us, we'd see lineup changes there in as soon as 2 weeks. My fingers are crossed!

He told me they used to have a Medieval Madness at Fat Daddy's. They sold it to a collector for more than 3 times what they bought it for, and that was many years ago.

The High Roller Casino was down when I arrived; the plunger was shot. The tech promptly got down to fixing it as I was leaving. The DMD on that game has also recently been replaced.

    #28 11 years ago

Sounds cool. I quit going to FD's because of the condition. I've talked to old man Thorpe and his son several times and didn't get very far, so I'm glad you had some success. Although the proof will be in the pudding.

I know Orin so if you have trouble getting a response let me know....

And again, if you want to come by and talk about this and play some pinball, let me know.

    #29 11 years ago

I may have to take you up on that. You have a great collection.

Most are in some state of restoration however....Games for play currently are SS, MC and TSPP.

It would be fun to travel to Raleigh since plenty of you Guys and gals travel to lost ark in greensboro. Keep us informed on progress

    #32 11 years ago

I'd be interested as well, and could bring my Fishtales for any of the local private hostings around Raleigh.

    #33 11 years ago

It may be too hard to get everybody together in December with the holidays and Lost Ark tourney. Does January work better for everybody? What would be the smallest amount of pins that would be necessary for a venue, public or private. I assume 3, what does everyone else think?

    #34 11 years ago

    Hi all,
I don't meant to hijack this thread with an introduction, but this is my first post to pinside. 3 years ago, I moved to the Charlotte NC area from NY, and I've been involved with pinball for over 15 years now.

Currently I have a collection of about 20 games that are mostly higher end Williams and Bally DMD titles, as well as a bunch of nice 80's SS titles, and currently one late model EM (Old Chicago)

I get most of my satisfaction out of bringing back to life the old and beaten up equipment that I am able to find, and generaly do more repair work now than I do playing any games.

To that end, I now have a basement full of good clean games that don't get played much, and I'd be happy to discuss hosting a night to come and play for those that would like to, and possibly even a re-curring event for a league etc.

Of course, being a bit far away from Raleigh, might preclude a lot of those who have responded to this post, but I know there's a bunch of pinheads around Charlotte that also cruise this forum, so I figured I'd shoot this out there.

If you have any interest, please either PM me or respond to this post, and I'll start a new thread if there's enough interest.

    Thanks,
    Vinny

Thanks. That is a great offer and you have a great collection. I would definitely be interested in coming.

There's several members that mostly hang out on the local forum pinballbash that regularly rotate hostings of 'bashes' in Charlotte area. I'm sure they'd love for you to attend as well as add your home to the rotation.

    #37 11 years ago

Always wanted to see your collection, Vinny!

    #38 11 years ago

I'm up for a once a month league in the triangle. Noysboy and I talked about one a couple years ago but we never got it rolling. I had to sell most of my games shortly after but I am slowly rebuilding the lineup. Add me to the list.

    #39 11 years ago

If we have 8-12 people, then figure on groups of 3-4 plus one extra game in case of one going down. So, 3-4 pins should be enough to host. Obviously, we could make it work on less if necessary.

I will end up with four games and would be willing to host, but probably not until January.

Im happy to meet up somewhere with everyone to figure it out and play!

BTW, Im headed to Lost Ark tonight to drop off a WCS. If anyone doesnt have plans, I should be there for a couple of hours...at least.

    #40 11 years ago

Sounds like we're building some good momentum here and on Bash! I hope we can really get organized statewide in 2013 and do enough playing to identify a rigorously battle-tested IFPA North Carolina state champion.

I think I'm going to head over to Fat Daddy's tonight and eat, then go downstairs and play for a while, if anyone's in the neighborhood...

    #41 11 years ago

+1 for once per month in the triangle, that is realistic for me to make the drive. I would be happy to bring a game for a tournament as well. I also sent word to IFPA that I would volunteer for the state tournament to help any way I can.

    #42 11 years ago

Someday down the road we could have a meeting at my house, but that will have to wait several months. Too much going on my with elderly father right now to make any such plans.

    #43 11 years ago

FWIW, in the ohio league...they play in Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland...about 2-4 hours apart in travel time. If people are up for it, Im sure we could have people in the Charlotte and other areas in the league...as long as people can commit to travelling once a month.

    #44 11 years ago

I wanted to compile all the people that have expressed interest in a Triangle pinball league. Here is what I have so far:

Site Name Name Location Where Responded
    Olivas Robert Raleigh PS, PBB
    Olivas Dante Raleigh PS, PBB
    PsychoSonic Dan Raleigh PS, PBB
    PsychoSonic Andrew Raleigh PS, PBB
    PinPlayer2 Greensboro PS
    DeafDumbBlindkid Durham PBB
Triadwatch Keith Greensboro PS, PBB, LA
    Noysboy Pat Durham PS, PBB
    Morphis72 Raleigh PBB
    Craig Craig Durham PS
    Craig son Durham PS
    Soapman Bill Stokesdale PS
    Soapman son Stokesdale PS
    TopJimmycooks Wilmington PS
    MMP Ben Raleigh PS
    robertmee Robert Raleigh PS
    thegiven Cary PS
    Vinnypin Vinny Charlotte PS
    MarcG Marc Raleigh PS
    Tim Raleigh
    David Durham LA

Please let ms know if I have made a mistake or misunerstood. The list is 21 people. Some seem very firm and others less so. In any event we have more than enough to get started. There are also a few people that said that they could host. One thing we need to sort out is skill level to make the teams air. I say we self qualify A,B,C,D. A would enter A division in tournament; B would place top 10 in B division, C would place after 10, and D would not enter tourney. We also need to decide when we will play on weekday or weekend. The other related issue is where we will travel to? Do we stay in the triangle or go to Greesboro, Charlotte, Wilmington? Please let me know your thoughts?

One last question is when do we want to start? Do we want to have an informal gathering to meet each other first? and if so, when?

    #45 11 years ago

Weekends and local for me only....I travel extensively for work during the week and have my kid on the weekends (hence local events).

    #46 11 years ago

    Two thoughts.

    1) we should have a single location for posting. Maybe a google group? it stinks to always have to check the bash and pinside.
    2) how many are up for the lost ark tourney on the 15th? if enough of us can meet there, we can chat about the league...there is typically a lot of waiting around...

    #47 11 years ago

    Pat,

I agree with both thoughts. Do you want to set up a Google group? That is why I wanted email addresses. I also have an excel file with all the data I gathered from everyone. We will be at LA for the tournament.

    #48 11 years ago

We have just set up a google group. Please provide email addresses to [email protected] if you are interested.

    #49 11 years ago

The name of the new Google group is Triangle Pinball League. It is a public group so you can join yourself.
