This is actually fairly easy to do. Take off the cap nut on the end of the rod where the spring will go. Slide the rod just far enough inward to clear the frame of the drop target bank. Slip the spring onto the end of the rod and into the position shown in the illustration. Slide the rod back in place, and replace the cap nut.

The only tricky part may happen when you are sliding the rod. The rod tends to bind on the metal levers of each drop target, especially when sliding in one direction. So you may need to slightly adjust the position of the metal levers as you move the rod, to un-bind it.
