Quoted from cookpins:

I just watched the movie this weekend, and I think you are wrong and this other theory is correct. After Butch kills Vincent with the suppressed Mac-10, he leaves his apartment and stops at a red light. Crossing the intersection in front of him is Marcellus, who is carrying a pink donut box with two coffees on top. I always wondered why Vincent would leave the gun on the counter, and also why he had this obscene firearm instead of his characteristic polished pistol.

The other theory is saying both were at Butch's apt but Jules left his gun and went to the coffee shop. (And then Vincent is killed.)

Jules being at Butch's apt is never implied nor depicted in the film.

Vincent just was sloppy and didn't take his gun to the bathroom with him.

#2453 1 year ago

Jules was not at Butch's apartment. After leaving the diner and Pumpkin/Honey Bunny robbery, Jules and Vince go to the club where Marsellus is meeting with Butch. It is assumed that Jules informed Marcellus at that time that he was out of the life. Butch finds the MAC-10 on the counter, hears Vince flush, and fires on him when he opens the bathroom door. Is that Vince's gun, or was it Marsellus' gun? We don't know. My theory is that Vince, working alone now, insists on taking more firepower on jobs (i.e. "We should have shotguns for this kind of deal"). We do know that Marsellus was clearly there prior, though, because after Butch wipes down the gun and his apartment quickly he gets in Fabienne's shitbox car parked a block or so over and encounters Marsellus walking across the street bringing doughnuts and coffee toward the apartment. Marsellus was so offended by Butch's double cross that he went on this job personally.

Marsellus was so offended enough by Butch's double cross that he went on this job personally.

And then Marcellus took it in the ass all over spite.

This movie is pure fucked up goodness!

#2455 1 year ago

Oh, and Marcellus is still packing a hand cannon when he is outside Butch's apartment, because when he comes to and realizes what happened, he pulls and fires and hits the tank-assed broad in the hip, then proceeds to take wild pot shots at Butch as he chases him down the alley and into the pawn shop. So the MAC-10 is probably Vince's, and he was sloppy. Vince was always sloppy*, so it tracks.

*why was Vince still holding the gun, especially with no trigger control, in the car after leaving Brett/Flock of Seagull's apartment?

Quoted from RTS:

The actual chronological end of the movie is when Butch and Fabienne ride off on the chopper.

It’s too bad the chopper isn’t represented somewhere on the playfield. More so that Butch isn’t a part of the main cast of characters having game modes.

Ya, mark said in the loser kid podcast that he had marcellus and butch as characters but the licensors said no and made QT one of them. He then said he won't say why. I wonder what the reason is. Is there beef between Bruce and Quentin?

Bruce isn't exactly in a place to approve licensing material these days. And Bruce's wife has been very clear that she wants him and them to be left alone. I very much suspect that his condition is the hang up.

This is exactly how I saw it too, except I never put it together that Marcellus was bringing donuts and coffee to Vincent. Seemed so out of character for the boss to do that.

I agree with your interpretation though. (Technically it still isn't definitive if Wallace was returning from a donut run, or if he was just arriving late with treats.

I think you're right though. Totally agree that Jules has already left the business at that point.

Man, the rules to this movie are too convoluted / deep....this is what happens when you have an LCD screen

That's probably true. The story of how Bruce got the part is pretty awesome as told by QT.
Also, just realized the whole pawn shop MB will basically be like a butch and marcellus mode.

#2462 1 year ago

The one thing I know that there is much speculation over is how many days are documented in the film. You will find many people that insist it is over the course of two days. But, the Mia/Vince date night chapter proves this untrue. Vince tells Jules and later Paul that he is taking Mia out while Marsellus goes to Florida. This is on Day One, when Butch takes the bribe from Marcellus. Vince does not specify when he is supposed to take Mia out, but we know that it is supposed to be while Marcellus is away. Well we know that Day One cannot be fight night between Butch and Floyd Wilson because Marcellus was at the fight. After the fight Mia is at Butch's dressing room door smoking and tells Vince she forgot to thank him for the night out. At a minimum, it has to be four days.

Day One: Big Brain Brett/Marvin's brains on the floor/Bonnie situation/the Wolf/Pumpkin & Honey Bunny/Marcellus pays off butch
Day Two: Vince buys heroin/Jack Rabbit Slim's/Mia OD/Adrenaline Shot
Day Three: Watch flashback/Butch fight/Esmerelda Villalobos/Fabienne
Day Four: Blueberry Pancakes/Butch's Apartment/Spider Caught a Couple of Flies/Zed's Dead, baby

I would say your day 1 and 2 are actually the same day. It's known that when they go to the apartment it's early in the day. Also, at Jimmy's Jules says this morning air is some cold ass shit and Jimmys wife isn't back from working the night shift. They go to the bar and then butch keys Vincents car. Vincent sees it and is mad and tells his drug dealer about it.

I like the Soul in a Box theory. Ancient Chinese culture (supposedly) holds that the soul leaves the body from the back of the head. Marcellus wears Band-Aid on the back of his head/neck. The briefcase lock combination is 666. As such, Marsellus sold his soul to the Devil and hired Brett/Flock of Seagulls to steal it back.

The Bonnie Situation is definitely in the morning. They get to Brett's apartment at "7:22 in the A.M." But, that would be a lot to pack into one day. In order for that all to occur in on Day One Marsellus would have to be leaving town after paying off Butch, Vince would have to leave the bar and go change into another suit, go to Lance's to get the heroin and shoot up, then go get Mia. Problems with this timeline: Vince never tells anyone that he is taking Mia out "tonight." In fact, he specifies that he will be taking her out when Marsellus is away to Florida. BUT, if Butch did key Vince's car, Vince's conversation with Lance as he buys the heroin tells us that it can't be the same day. In fact, Vince tells Lance that "some fucker" keyed his car "the other day." Not "today" ("Oh man, you know what some fucker did the other day?!?").

On a side note, shouldn´t the .45 pictured on the playfield be stainless if it is supposed to represent the gun Vincent or Jules used?

Vincent shows animosity toward Butch in the bar scene, but it doesn't appear that Butch even knows who Vince is.

There is no indication that Butch keyed Vince's Malibu. That is completely made up.

As I recall, the night of the fight is never made clear. It was definitely after the date with Mia, so it could've been a few days later allowing Marcellus go to Florida and also attend the fight.

Some great theories presented here & I agree that gambit3113 is correct on the timeline.

I had never considered before that Marcellus was returning to the apartment from the coffee shop. Since he was packing the hand cannon in his suit, I think it's safe to assume that careless Vincent left his upgraded firepower Uzi on the kitchen counter.

And Marcellus' soul is in the case. No debate about that IMO, especially with the number of the beast combination. That rumor has been around since the movie was released.

Also seems like Butch would have keyed Vincent's car outside the bar, considering the WTF look he gave him in that long beautiful panning camera shot.

I'll also throw in how cool it was, after seeing the film repeatedly in shitty pan-&-scan VHS release over the early years, to finally see it in widescreen again when it was released on DVD. Seeing the full widescreen shot of Butch & the cab driver was memorable. Just like the full elevator shot in Ghostbusters when they fire up the proton packs for the first time.

Fun read tho!

He is running a illegal casino out of the hotel room he is in when he gets the call to help out. That is why he is dressed in a tux. Or he could have just been their gambling.

My take exactly on the first watching.

#2479 1 year ago

So, did Marcellus sell his soul to get Mia? Explains why he threw a brother out a 4th story balcony.

And I think the gun on the counter was Vince's piece, since he didn't seem to have one on his person whilst on the shitter.

I never pieced together that Marcellus was going to / returning to Butch's apartment when they "ran into each other" on the street, and I'll definitely look for that next time I watch. But it always made sense to me that Vincent left his gun on the counter while he used the john, heroin dulled his edge and it cost him.

#2481 1 year ago
Quoted from VGC1612:

It was not his gun but Wallace's.Both go to Butch's appartment and since it will take some time,Wallace go to the local coffee shop for some drink/food,he left his gun behind.

Never thought about that. It makes sense. I always thought it was quite a coincidence Butch encounters Marcellus at a crosswalk. Always thought the cups of coffee he was holding were just a funny touch. Your explanation makes perfect sense though. Good job.

Just to say, I’ve seen QT say in an interview that Butch does key Vincent’s car outside of the bar while V is meeting with Marcellus. You don’t fuck with another man’s automobile!

I’ve always wondered what Vincent’s animosity towards Butch is all about though. Like someone else here said, Butch doesn’t appear to know who Vincent is in the bar. What did Butch do that unknowingly pissed Vincent off in the past?

I stand corrected. I couldn't find the interview, but I did see references that QT made that claim.

Somewhere between the restaurant scene and the bar scene, Jules and Vincent had to stop to get his Malibu, and they never changed clothes. They didn't have a car when they went to the restaurant from Monster Joe's.

I have this “must/must not” thing about hearing from the writers about their art if I think it’s good. It’s good to take the time to think about it, kick ideas around with others, and just to not detract from the magic—the way it affects you. I’ll usually cave after I’ve had enough time with it, and we’ve certainly had that since the film’s release. I didn’t mean to learn anything about the movie, I just happened to be walking by a tv when the interview was on and stopped for a few minutes when he said it. It was pretty recent, I think—last 5 years or so—and he kind of said it almost deflatedly, like he was disappointed to have to be “revealing” this between-the-frames moment for the 20th time.

Maybe Vincent and Jules took the cab from Monster Joe’s to get Vincent’s car, and he dropped Jules off after eating before he went to the bar. Maybe the car was at the bar, maybe Jules and Vincent met there in the morning to “carpool” to get the briefcase. I don’t know what gangsters do, and this post will suffice as my defense if and when I am ever arrested for gangsterizing.

It would make sense that they would take the cab from Monster Joe’s in Torrance to Vince’s place to get his car in Redondo Beach, because Inglewood is quite a bit further north. They had the briefcase that needed to be returned, and Vince had apparently not even seen Marsellus since returning from Amsterdam (assumed based on the greeting Marsellus gives Vince in the club).
