I'm thinking a lot about the state of pinball. My most favorite hobby.

Do we even want things bigger? I'm not so sure.

There are things I would change, getting pinball more popular is desirable but precarious.

So does it matter to you? Its popularity?

    Im curious.

One benefit to heightened popularity would lead to better games. Perhaps more builders.

Heightened popularity might makes pinball worth more. That is not a motivation for me, though.

Never happen (never)... and I'm normally a "never say never" person.

Pinball has never been "mainstream" not even at it's peak in the 70's. It's WAY less popular now.

Setting aside video game recreations of pinball, pulling pinball into the mainstream has to mean public venues.

But I just don't see how that could happen on a large scale.

Well with the US men's soccer team out of the world up, pinball may pass it in popularity

I think if it went mainstream, we would see a lot more route operators. That imo would be a very good thing, as it would mean more used games on the market.

I think pinball is on the verge of a Renaissance. I have two boys 13 and 10, and all their friends marvel at our pinball machine. And it’s an ol EM. All these kids who grew up on xboxes, have no experience with anything arcade or pinball. They are used to interacting with a 2d television screen. Pinball is 3D, with bright flashy lights, mechanically moving spinners, bumpers and flippers. It’s as if they had grown up on b/w tv and are shown a color tv. (Ya I just dated myself) the younger generations are valuing experiences more and more, and introducing them to pinball IS an experience for them. I really think we are at the end of the dark ages now, and as more and more home brew companies pop up it will catch the attention of the Williams and Bally’s of the world again.

And btw my avatar pic is from the Chicago arcade expo last year, they spent two whole days playing machines that predated them by 30 plus years and loved it. They still talk about it, and the people they met. So what’s old CAN be new again. Don’t sell the hobby short!

Pinball at it's least popular in a the US is still far more popular than soccer has ever been.

They are trying to bring pinball into the mainstream by showing a guy playing one on an arthritis medicine commercial.

That lets the general public know how cool it is to be in this hobby.
