You can get to the grass anytime... The play field is much more exciting to play with.

#353 4 years ago

I only planned on removing the rest of the playfield stuff but then I soldiered on and sanded it to a 800 grit - ready for a clear coat after some clean up and masking.

Nice progress.

It's all done! What a breeze.

Seriously though, I need to get my ass in gear. Seeing wamonkey's progress makes me super jealous lol

I have done playfield swaps full rebuilds etc. On this one I did the cabinet first as I waited for the hardtop, some people won't like it as I did the cabinet with the decal instead of a stencil but I think it looks better. I have powder coated the rails all black after I saw that in a HS forum which I think looks cool. I have the new clear ramp etc. It will look good basically better than new when I am finished.

But, to take this down to the bare wood sanding was easy removing everything to clear the inserts and get ready to apply it was the hard part, just like it will be when when I put it back together. You know how it goes flipper rebuild will be thrown in, new coil sleeves, etc.

Certainly a hardtop is easier than a playfield swap but it is far from easy for sure. I thought I was behind when my machine has been sitting disassembled for 2 months plus.

#357 4 years ago

Just doing the hardtop (and replacing ramp with that wonderful freeplay40 red ramp at the same time) plus flipper rebuilds will take me quite a while.

I should do some powder coating too, while it's all torn apart. Mind showing yours off a bit?

#358 4 years ago

My powder guy is awesome and I've been itching to do SOME pinball.. Might as well be the one that's getting torn apart to hardtop. Just gotta decide on colors.

That rough coat came out great Jordan! I need to redo my High Speed Coin door as well.

#362 4 years ago

I love the texture. It looks outstanding on the Neo Geo. Mine was a real ugly turd when I bought it lmao

#363 4 years ago

Here is the cabinet....

Black on black will be nice with a hardtop- all LED’s

Just put a coat of clear on the playfield

#366 4 years ago

I'm kicking around some various ideas -- red, yellow, black.. I love the texture I got on my neo geo but it seems everyone who puts powder on pinball machines goes with glosssssssy sheen, no texture. Just not sure it would look as good.

I'm going to try tearing into HS this weekend I think. I want to get started.

Looking good wamonkey! Still haven't had a chance to do much with mine.. I put new legs on and removed the security bar over the weekend though!

Hoping to pull the PF and finally get to work soon. Maybe seeing you finish yours will help push me forward.

This is a Hardtop thread not a High speed playfield swap thread.

#375 4 years ago

oops,my bad. Sorry. Meant to post in the High Speed Club thread. Maybe the mods can move it.

In my defense, I saw KSUWildcatFan High Speed post and got a bit excited.

#376 4 years ago

Slow progress. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit queasy about this.

I hear ya.

No individual part of the process is overly challenging, but collectively it's a good amount of work.

Just keep looking back at the post-install pics to keep yourself motivated

All I have to do is play my hardtopped Space shuttle to know this NEEDS to happen.. But that doesn't make me any less nervous lol

How has it held up over time? Any dimpling, scuffing, anything at all?

Hardtops seem like a much better way to go than paint and clearcoat, to me.

#380 4 years ago

I can't really say as I've only owned it a few weeks. There was a scare when I brought it home because I didn't adequately protect the bottom of it from the sun and it lifted slightly but it appears to have settled back down. I got lucky my own stupidity didn't ruin it.

It's an amazing product and plays like a sheet of glass. I can't wait to try high speed with it.

I can’t speak to a hardtop specifically, but I’ve had a lexan protector on my FP for about 4 years with LOTS of plays. I eventually pulled it and clear coated, however when I pulled the lexan I noticed where repeated ball travel was starting to cause scratches/dullness (this was far less visible when the protector was on the playfield). As a test, I pulled out my drill and buffing disk, loaded it up with some Manzerna P126 to see if the scuffing would buff out. It did! While this is anecdotal evidence, I believe the same would hold true for a hard top.

1 week later

Painfully slow progress

I'm feeling sicker about this as I go along. I really hope I can sort it all out from my pictures when I go to reassemble.

I took video for that exact reason. Was concerned I would miss a critical angle. Just make sure to move slowly.

I believe I posted some of my vids in that album, but reach out if you need pics of anything.

#390 4 years ago

In theory this SHOULD be pretty straightforward but I'm definitely getting overwhelmed / horrified of the prospect of turning what was a fully functional machine into a giant brick. No idea if the pictures I've taken along the way have been sufficient or if my sorting of parts will prove effective in any way. I definitely need to get to sanding soon so I can start reassembly sooner rather than later.

#391 4 years ago

It is definitely intimidating, but you’ll be able to do it. One step at a time

The worst that will happen is that you put something in the wrong spot and then have to redo a bunch of work.

I think the anticipation and fear of messing something up is much worse than the reality.

You got this!

Good God I hope you're right.

Getting pretty close to being able to lay down the hardtop to check alignment.. Then start sanding.

I'll will myself forward enough to sand and apply the hardtop, then worry about reassembly from there. This is definitely further into the deep end than I was probably ready for, only having done minor adjustments and drop rebuilds in the 6 or so months I've been doing things with pinball machines.. Lol

I definitely had to reinstall some stuff due to not thinking through the order. Nothing damaged, other than my pride

Probably not - I haven't even placed my parts order. I'm waayyy ahead of myself. I'm just trying to strip it as quick as possible so I can spray some poly at the first warmish day. I basically have everything to do still. I'm 2 hours in on a 50 hour project.

It's taken me so much longer than that to get this far, lmao

You got this- always worth remembering the following. There are probably three or more of you doing this at the same timed some with a lot more experience who willl lend advice. Also- lots of intact games around to get reference photos if needed. No worries!!! Enjoy
