Hello you all.

i would like to share my very special T2 restauration here.

i love working with metal and so i came to the idea to turn a T2 into a véry special special Chrome Edition.
so i bought one.
there will be many different customised parts added to the cabinet as well as the playfield.
here are some ideas:
for start, i want my cabinet to be different; i would like a metal cabinet, to match the chrome theme.
so, i have made a stainless steel shell, made of 1,5mm gauge brushed stainless steel, wich coveres the entire cabinet and backbox.
next, this metal cabinet will be covered with 'normal' Chrome edition decals and then i will cut out parts of the artwork at some areas, to reveal the stainless steel cabinet underneith.
there will be illuminated siderails with tekst cutted out, illuminated custom coindoor, illuminated apron and illuminated sideblades and backbox hinges.
also will there be a full custom stainless steel plastic set, wich will also be illuminated.
this and some more ideas.
here are some photos, beginning with the old machine.

first made paper templates, before cutting the metal.

image00003 (resized).jpegimage00003 (resized).jpegimage00004 (resized).jpegimage00004 (resized).jpegimage00005 (resized).jpegimage00005 (resized).jpegimage00007 (resized).jpegimage00007 (resized).jpegimage00008 (resized).jpegimage00008 (resized).jpegimage00010 (resized).jpegimage00010 (resized).jpegimage00013 (resized).jpegimage00013 (resized).jpeg

this is the stainless steel shell.
here it still has a white protective film on it.
the coindoor area is held in place with a few tabs and is cutted out later, to keep all straight during transport and istallation.

image00042 (resized).jpegimage00042 (resized).jpegimage00043 (resized).jpegimage00043 (resized).jpegimage00044 (resized).jpegimage00044 (resized).jpegimage00045 (resized).jpegimage00045 (resized).jpegimage00046 (resized).jpegimage00046 (resized).jpegimage00047 (resized).jpegimage00047 (resized).jpeg

my plan is to cut out the entire big rectangle area in the side cabinet decals wich sais T2JD and reveal this area in stainless underneith.
then cut out each indiviual letter of the T2JD decal's tekst and place them back in on the stainless rectangle cutted out area on the cabinet.
hope you understand what i mean.

the cutted out text will be blue illuminated, just like the sideblades.

here are some pics of the metal plastic set.
this is also made of brushed stainless.
there's still a white protective film on it.

image00061 (resized).jpegimage00061 (resized).jpegimage00062 (resized).jpegimage00062 (resized).jpegimage00063 (resized).jpegimage00063 (resized).jpegimage00064 (resized).jpegimage00064 (resized).jpeg

#64 3 years ago

underneith each metal plastic, will be a blue semi-transparant version, so all cutted out parts of the metal will light up.
the plastic version has a offset of 2 mm from the outer contours of metal part on top of it, so the outer edges of each plastic will also light up.

#65 3 years ago

red arrows are for the rotation of each plastics , the way it's mounted on the playfield. red Arrow shows the brushing direction.
to get all brushed marks in the same vertical direction, so all brushing marks will line up nicely.

Quoted from Bongiorno:

I luv my T2.. make sure u put a pinsound in.. Your game deserves all the best..sweet job !!

tnx. yes, planning on Pinsound and Colour display.

many thanks!

#88 3 years ago

yesterday, i have cutted the outer contours of the cabinet decals.
normaly the exess material gets trimmed off, after installing the decals on wood.
i would like my decals to be trimmed back a bit more then usual, to show more of the stainless on the cabinet edges.
to prevent the risk of scratching the metal, when trimming back the decals the normal way, i had to do it before putting on the decals.

#89 3 years ago

fist, made 3 metal templates, using the dimensions of the metal shell.

IMG_4152 (resized).jpgIMG_4152 (resized).jpg
#90 3 years ago

the inner contours will be the outer dimensions of the decals.
the cutout slots are for alligning the decals edges underneith the template.
this also offers the oppertunity to allign the decals arcs before trimming.

using a metal table and heavy duty magnets to make sure the template stays in place.

#96 3 years ago

yes. sounds crazy, i know.

#99 3 years ago

precutted the corners of the decals so the stainless corners of the cab will be visible.
next post the decals will be on the cab!

#104 3 years ago

finaly the decals are on the cabinet!
the cutting out of the letters by hand did not go as well as i hoped.
so, for now the square on the side decals is empty.
there will be new text printed and cutted out by machine and these letters will be placed back later.

IMG_4225 (resized).jpgIMG_4225 (resized).jpg

#106 3 years ago

on the front decal, i have cutted out the T2 letters.
also made 2 cutouts on the bottom side.

IMG_4244 (resized).jpgIMG_4244 (resized).jpg
#107 3 years ago

the seam of the metal shell in the center of the front is hidden by the small tab between the T and 2.

IMG_4291 (resized).PNGIMG_4291 (resized).PNG

#108 3 years ago

the arcs meet up nicely. the grey lines below don't. not much i can change about that.
unfortunately you can't win it all..

IMG_4260 (resized).jpgIMG_4260 (resized).jpg

IMG_4259 (resized).jpgIMG_4259 (resized).jpg
above the arcs the decals are cutted back to show more of the stainless corners on the cab.

#109 3 years ago

next up: siderails!

removing foil and cleaning up the stainless.
when cutted, the protective foil ets melted on to the metat at each cutout..

#118 3 years ago

last few days i have been busy cleaning all parts of the inside.
wire harness, mechanics etc. not very many pictures to be posted..
ordering small parts, getting the PCB's shipped for technical overhaul.
display panel is almost finished.

3 weeks later
#121 3 years ago

well, it's been a while since the last update, but here are some new photos.
the speaker panel is finished and installed. the backbox hinges illumination is installed and the backbox is installed on the cab.

IMG_4830 (resized).jpgIMG_4830 (resized).jpg
#122 3 years ago

the speakers are red illuminated.
for now, there still is a orange plasma dmd.
this will be replaced later for a colour display.
not sure what system yet. Colordmd, or some other brand.
suggestions anyone?

Quoted from Malenko:

The ColorDMD has the video mode in color, so even though I'm the guy who colored T2 for Pin2DMD I think the ColorDMD is the better choice, LED version.

thanks.

#125 3 years ago

also made a new backboard.
my first intention was to place a small metal emblem, just to replace the Original BB decal.
now made a bigger version, wich covers the complete backboard, the entire backboard is now stainless.

Quoted from mark532011:

Absolutely beautiful!
What do you use for the blue glow? It must run on GI 5v?

i have used EL panels for the blue and red illumination.
this material is very thin (thin as laminated paper)
the EL panel circuit runs on its own inverter, (producing about 120 volts)

#129 3 years ago
Quoted from pinballjj:

amazing work! this is executed so well I suspect that any of the original cabinet or backbox hardware that is not upgraded will look out of place

yeah, still don't know if i will keep the Original style translite, or install a custom one.
think the Original version looks pretty good.

#130 3 years ago

these last few photo's where very crappy.
here are some new in higher resolution.

this is what the cabinet looks like at this moment.
the text for the cabinet side decals has not been finished yet, hope this will be done very soon.
at the back of the cabinet, i would like to have the same warning tekst like normal, but executed in black vinyl.
these vinyl decals are also still in progress.

#134 3 years ago

no problem man.
everybody's opinion and advise is welcome.
can't win em all.
the big hole in the side decals will be filled with it's Original tekst T2JD.

#141 3 years ago

well done.

editing artwork is out of my zone.
i think i'm going to stick to the original translite for now.

#144 3 years ago

kind of stuck with the cab for now. waiting on the final artwork to be finished.
Next up is the playfield.
I did not have a playfield tipper yet, so made my own.
Here shown with my old playfield in it.

the new playfield will be something special, to suit the cabinet!
It is a custom made, one-of field with different colours than the original one.
silkscreened the old fashion way.
Many thanks to Peter and Leon from Buthamburg - Germany for making this possible.

yes, it's time for a update.
other things got in the way, and more parts had to be ordered.
the playfield has had it's resting time for the clearcoat to cure and harden out.
i have started rebuilding the playfield in the tipper.
the bottom side of the playfield is now finished.

Quoted from dudah:

Great idea.

the huntership is not realy a new idea, it's just my own version of it, since i liked the plasic edge, surrounding the bottom of the ship, to have a smaller offset than the available mods.

(and ofcourse i don't like to pay $200 for it )

#176 3 years ago

the cannon laser aint a new idea either, again just my own version.

this laser sender is hidden from normal vieuw, inderneith the cannon.
the laser will be ativated for as long as the cannon motor is powered.

this, along with a SHAKER will rock the game!!

here's my shaker.

it's made fully out of stainless steel.
the two weights are ajustable in two positions.
the motor speed will also be adjustable by a switch on the relais.
the shaker will have it's own power supply by a separated trafo, wich also feeds the 12v Led illumination of the coindoor and the display panel.

they cause quite a rumble

sorry for the dark picture, could't find any better.

#182 3 years ago

moving on with the playfield.
for testing i hooked up the inserts + the GI to a 6v adapter.
the playfield is still in the tipper.
not all lights lite up the way they should, due to the complex system of diode's.
for example, i can't get both eyes of the skull to light up at the same time.. and some lights are brighter ten others. but it does not matter for now.
later, when installed in the machine yhey will llight up more evenly.
i'm still trying some different setups and perhaps i need to install some more extra lights in dark area's like the left rear corner.
here are some pics:

for the skull plastic, above the left ramp i made a sheet of clearplastic, to ligt up the skull's eyes with 2 red LEDs. i was not sure if i would use this. guess i will now.
and maybe some extra GI spots on the dark corners.

Quoted from Malenko:

You could put an LED strip..

could give it a go. the plastic is to dark now also.
the cannon also still needs to be lighted.
this will mean pulling more wires and connectors.
well, what needs to be done..

is there any way to upload a short video here without using y tube?

Visiting this thread always makes me sad.
Because, some day, I hope to get a T2 for myself. AND IT WON'T BE THIS ONE!!

no need for tears man. anything is possible.

the warning tekst decals are finished.
it is black vinyl, with all tekst and blocks cutted out.
the smaller sheet is the piece with the patents.

IMG_6263 (resized).JPGIMG_6263 (resized).JPG

#190 3 years ago

for the last week (!) i have been applying the black vinyl warning tekst to the backbox.
i started with the smaller decal, with the patents.

since the letters where so d@#* small, i choose to apply the letters and the outer sheet (how do i explain this) in one piece on the cabinet and remove the outher sheet later. this worked well.

IMG_6264 (resized).JPGIMG_6264 (resized).JPGIMG_6268 (resized).JPGIMG_6268 (resized).JPGIMG_6270 (resized).JPGIMG_6270 (resized).JPGIMG_6273 (resized).JPGIMG_6273 (resized).JPG
#191 3 years ago

then came the larger BB decal.
i also kept all letters and the outer sheet together and sticked them on the cab, since this worked ok withe the smaller one.
but when i tried to remove the outher sheet, it started breaking up at each individual letter.
leaving me pealing each corner, gap and square out with a mini razor blade.

like this.

IMG_6358 (resized).JPGIMG_6358 (resized).JPG
#193 3 years ago

i should have peeled the outher shell first, before placing the remaining text on the pin.

#194 3 years ago

slowly getting there

#195 3 years ago

after peeling for over 10 hours it turned out this way:

#196 3 years ago

i messed up 2 letters, they will be replaced when i have some new vinyl.

#200 3 years ago

finaly, the new text for the side decals is finished

these letters are all cutted out.
the black square has the same dimensions as the square hole in my side decals. alligning this is critical, since the two "claws" have to meet up with the new tekst.
i changed the Chrome Edition to ULTRA edition

yes, made a laser for the cannon. will show more of it later. first i want to have the playfield hooked up to the machine for some real testing.
i am making a mod out of this cannon laser and put this mod on the market soon.
there are also Morpheus mods for BSD and SS

BSD: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/bsdracula-3-d-tombstone-cover/page/18

it's been a while, since i have updated.
i have finished the cabinet and backbox and placed all pcb's and hooked up the wires.
made some small changes to the playfields plastics and swapped the awfull looking aftermarket skull for a different model.
this new skull has more detail to it, and i think the colour better suits the stainless theme.
it is a skull from Terminator Genisys. know that's is not correct, but just think it looks better.

the playfield is ready to go into the cabinet.
work on the cabinet is 99% finisished, time to place the PF in the cabinet for the first time.

the translite is not as bright as it seems in the pics..
first, for testing i start with the orange plasma display and the old Original soundboard.
if all works well, without big problems, i will later put in a colour display and the Pinsound board in and hook up the new speakers.

thanks guys.

the machine still needs some final work. Pinsound, color display etc and also some final cabinet work, but it is finally nearing completion.
i will keep you updated

#230 2 years ago

it has been a while since my last post, had issues with my powerboard and getting the pin ready to play, but all finaly works.
the Pinsound has been installed as well as a set of Cliffy's.
for the display, i have chosen for a Pin2Dmd, i will give this system a try.
the laser on the cannon also is completed as well as the shaker and anti-glare glass.
i have to make a new stainless cover for the cannon, this one is a bit to long and touches the sideblades of the cab as the gun swivels when its loaded. also i want to change the design on one of the metal playfield plastics.
i will fix these last things and get back to you guys with some photo's of the final result.

made a new cover for the cannon.
i had to loose one corner, but then the T2 cutout also had to be smaller, so could not rescue the old one.

and then there where the rampflaps..
these had their original black finish and dit not match with the stainless.
so, i cutted some new stainless flaps. think they look way better.

Still have some small things to do. The colour display still needs some better software and still a few more hours to spend on the cabinet, but then it is all finished.

i might as well drop the bomb here;
i am planning on selling my T2 when it is all finished.

It must sound crazy after all this work.
But I have very limited space, i could use te space for a new project, not sure what that will going to be..
I started this project, to go once, all crazy with modding and pimping and the T2 theme suited perfect for the metal theme. now that the project is nearing its end, its time to move on.
When all last small details are finished the pin will appear on the marketplace. Thanks to everyone who followed on my project and all your replies! i will shoot some new photos when the machine is powered on and post them for you folks.

Would be curious to know how much it weighs now with all that stainless steel not that it matters.

i have added 60 kg of stainless.
don't know Arnie's starting weight was, but he gained quite a bit.
