Here’s an update on the project.
So I put two layers of plaster on the cabinet.

When dried I sanded the surface and removed the dust before I applied two coats of primer.

Then two coats of final black paint was applied and once dry I sanded the surface smooth.

Final coat of black paint applied.

Once the paint was dry it was time for the topbox to meet the cabinet for the first time.

Up next is to use the stencils to make the patterns and to fit the lower playfield into the cabinet.

Thank you very much naf_llabnip
I’m glad you are following it and to everyone else who follows this thread. I will soon post more photos of how the project proceeds.

You're doing an amazing job on this and it is a fun thread to follow. I have a Haunted House that I repaired and it is really a great game. One worth keeping.

Will be nice to see you complete the game so you can enjoy it.

Yes it will be nice to play it Robotworkshop but I try not to rush things now that I’m so close to finish it.
Hopefully a parcel from Rob will arrive this week with the last metal parts that I need.

Last weekend I got some time to do some more painting on the cabinet.
Using stencils from Pinball Pimp Stencils it was pretty straightforward. Very nice instructions on their website.
Starting with the green

Once the stencil was aligned I used a airbrush to apply the paint. This is the result after removing the stencil.

I let the green paint dry for 24 hours before repeating the procedure with the yellow layer.
This is the finished result, just a few minor touch up need to be done but I’m pretty happy with the result.

This weekend I will paint the last side and when it’s done it will be time to start installing the rest like coin door, side rails and playfileds.
Can’t wait to see what it will look like when it is finished

Getting jealous but i have seen from the beginning and your getting the result after a lot of effort.

#112 2 years ago

cp1610 it has taken a couple of hundreds of hours but the result will be worth it.
Question is what I shall build when this is done?

You could do Xenon… that would be cool.

What eras of games would you consider for a build from scratch project? I would assume older games are easier, and that the newer the game the more difficult of a project it would be. Would you agree, and if so, where would your cutoff point be where you wouldn't undertake it? I keep noticing The Simpsons Pinball Party playfields for sale, but building it from scratch seems way beyond what would be feasible, with all the game-specific toys you would have to source. And someone on my local craigslist is asking $25,000 for a Medieval Madness, and someone else is selling a Medieval Madness playfield for $700, and each time I see those two ads, it gets me thinking...

Amazing project, and the quality of your work seems off the charts! Thanks so much for sharing, it's inspiring!

Having done a Gottlieb game go do another game like Black Hole or Spirit. Or just to prove you are the king a Goin' Nuts. Could change manufacture the limit is how much you want toil lots of hours chasing parts or making them.

#116 2 years ago

trecemaneras yes, older games are easier but I think games up to the early -90s would be possible to build.

cp1610 it has crossed my mind to build a Black Hole so we will see in the future.
I will first give my Bally Spy Hunter a good clean up before I start with a new build from scratch.

#117 2 years ago

Last weekend I got some job done on the project, last side of the cabinet was painted.
Here are some step by step photos, it’s a little bit of repeat from previous post but I hope someone will find it interesting.

Starting with the stencil for the green pattern. Here is the stencil with the transfer film still on. First make sure the alignment is right before sticking it in place and then carefully remove the transfer film.

Masking everything thats not going to be painted.
B21570DE-C9F2-46A8-BA52-44E6B5E36AEA (resized).jpegB21570DE-C9F2-46A8-BA52-44E6B5E36AEA (resized).jpeg

Layers and layers of green paint applied with air brush.

The green layer finished and set to dry for 24 hours.

Then using the small square boxes to align the last stencil.
18FF9D93-14B2-4577-837D-0D11EB92C5B1 (resized).jpeg18FF9D93-14B2-4577-837D-0D11EB92C5B1 (resized).jpeg

Again masking everything that is not going to be painted and then starting with the yellow paint.
54263D19-C88E-4A9A-AD38-04A700006B11 (resized).jpeg54263D19-C88E-4A9A-AD38-04A700006B11 (resized).jpeg

Once the yellow is done its time to start peeling of the stencil.
969C7998-B845-428A-85EC-8F3FEE1FCAA3 (resized).jpeg969C7998-B845-428A-85EC-8F3FEE1FCAA3 (resized).jpeg

And here’s the result.
97822FF4-2B88-4F2D-BF10-64B375021E47 (resized).jpeg97822FF4-2B88-4F2D-BF10-64B375021E47 (resized).jpeg

Once the paint was completely dried it was time for some fun, putting temporary legs on and to start fitting the lower playfield with the main playfield.

I got a parcel from USA on Monday, it was the last metal parts that Rob W C had sent me so hopefully I get some time this weekend to polish them and install them on the playfileds.

Here’s a video of the first test with the lower playfield and the main playfield installed in the cabinet, some adjustments are needed but it gives an idea of what it will look like,

#119 2 years ago

EXCELLENT! Looks really nice with that neon green

#120 2 years ago

Thank you PinballPimp , the stencils are great!

#121 2 years ago

Will you do a gameplay video when your finished?

#122 2 years ago

When he's done he will not sure who more excited him or us watching from the beginning. Mach1 is not going to rush when it's this close. With the baby and this he's got a full plate.

#123 2 years ago

pinballboy yes, when it’s all done I will make a gameplay video.
cp1610 small progress at the moment, not much time to spend in the garage working on the pinball but when I can I have been doing adjustments to line up the lower playfield with the main playfield.
Had a little snag when suddenly all sounds came out wrong. After testing with different MPU board and sound board without any progress I discovered that the wire for sound 16 had come off one of the connectors, so when that was fixed the right sounds are played again.

It’s been awhile since I gave you guys an update on the project, there hasn’t been much time to work on it but last Thursday I got a whole day in the garage, uninterrupted!!
So what I did was making the metal parts behind the backglass.
First cutting a sheet of metal into a strip.

Flattening it to be able to make the bends and drilling holes and polish it.
278BA293-F5A4-4FCE-8100-E1F2AAF47DAC (resized).jpeg278BA293-F5A4-4FCE-8100-E1F2AAF47DAC (resized).jpegE4747D58-B728-4645-9534-DE8AE49BB6C7 (resized).jpegE4747D58-B728-4645-9534-DE8AE49BB6C7 (resized).jpeg
Finally mounting it in the topbox.

Side rails are polished and mounted.

The project is now in a stage of gameplay testing and adjusting switches and stuff.

I will upload some more photos later.

Yesterday the game moved from the garage and into the living room next to Mars God of War.
After a little more then a year the game is mostly finished. Some more fine tuning of switches needs to be done but the games playes well already.

I will make a video of the game and game play some time near in the future.

I have to wave the flag here to the pinball podcast gods just in the interest of sharing a really amazing story. RandomTask / Ron Hallett (not sure his Pinside username?) / ZMeny / and many more amazing folks in the media that bring us pinball stories and news to our ears: this guy built a freakin' Haunted House from scratch! This isn't a barn find resurrection where a pinball machine was buried in Pet Sematary and came creeping back into the market as a Craigslist special ... oh no, Mach1 has created a whole new life from almost nothing!! It is a true Pinball Miracle!!!

Anyway, if there is perhaps a Silverball Chronicles: System 80 (Black Hole / HH / etc.) episode down the road, this might make a nice mention that these machines are still so beloved that at least one new one has been created since the original run in the early 80s. Everybody have a great and pinball-filled day!
