I think the difference is many (most?) businesses that start-up are primarily risking their OWN capital, not their future clients capital.
JJP had a pretty unique gig in that he essentially presold a few years worth of operating capital....this obviously afforded him some luxuries that biz owners risking their own money just can't take.
Kudos to him for creating enough excitement to have MOST of those investors still "staying the course"....
