My Silverball Mania was working OK--
On thanksgiving I opened it up to change a few bulbs
I had to leave the house in the middle to get something,
When I came back all the kids were pressing all the things
on the playfield (bumpers, roll overs,).

I noticed problems when I got them off...
1) missing last flash on MPU [flashes 6X after initial on - forgot if that is correct (does initial ON count?) ]. Plays PowerUp Tune
2) momentary coils not working (ie start game, bumpers, slingshots)
3) Self test shows switch 34 stuck [50 PT. REBOUND (4) AND TOP BUMPERS (4)]

[All transformer/rectifier fuses & solenoid fuse OK]

For #1:
All TPs on MPU have correct voltage
disconnect connector MPU J1 - no change
replace J1 and disconnect J2 and J3 - no change
Correct voltages on U14 (for zero crossing)
Replaced U10/U11 with W65C21S6TPG-14 from Mouser. [Is this the correct part, or shoudl
I have used current limiting resistor version, or another part altogether?]

For #2
Replaced both playfield fuses (even though only 1 was blown), verified by voltage
and continuity fuses are Ok, and seated)

Q11, Q12, Q15 transistor grounding solenoids OK
Self Test 3,6,11 [Kicker and flipper relays] OK.

For #3
Did quick visual inspection only, working on #1 and #2

Anyone have any suggestions for any of the above?

Did the blown playfield fuse blow again when you powered it back up? Check to see if you have power at the coil lugs. Do the sling/bumpers make sounds when the switches are made?

#3 11 years ago

No, fuse on playfield did not blow again.

Will check coil lugs tomorrow.

Sling/bumpers make silent when switches make contact, no noise when
transistors grounded on the solenoid board.

I'm trying to trace the brown wire to flipper coils J1 pin 6 to the playfield.
Anyone knows the first stop this wire makes?

#4 11 years ago

OK, I finally realized the common flipper coil goes to the fuses first. Then splits out
to the two fuses (two white wires, going to the rising kicker solenoids; two yellow
going to the other momentary solenoids). The "Yellow" fuse is the one that blew
before, and these are the non-working solenoids. Maybe blown fuse was too
high - causing other problems?

#5 11 years ago

Pulled up the playfield. Found the fuse was blown again (actually a temp circuit breaker)

Reset it, and when I tried a momentary solenoid (like outhole kicker), it blew again.

I'm thinking there is really a problem with the zero crossing circuit. That makes sense, correct?

Should've stuck to rule start with problem that first is detected. No 7th flash.
OK.

Any tips on finding problem with zero crossing?

#6 11 years ago

If it plays the power up tune, then it's booting correctly.

1 flash, pause, then 6 flashes...

It would finish booting if no 7th flash (43 volt section not working)

Since the kids were monkeying around with it, I'd check every switch for to make sure nothing is bent, or wedged in there.

When u replaced the playfield solenoid fuse and booted up, did any coils lock on?

#7 11 years ago

I didn't notice any locking on....
I looked at the switches, all seemed OK,
34 is a total of 8 switches in parallel....
I'll have to pull some pins out of the connector to see if it really is that
those switches, or something else shorted - with J2 unplugged from the MPU
no problem is detected.
[maybe i'll add some molex connectors so I can remove sections from the
switches... lots of molex connecting!]

Well J2 is the playfield switches, but also U10 is in the mix there (see pic) so that might be an issue.
Could be a bent pin, or bad socket...you might want to get a 6821 from big daddy or some other pinball parts source.

I know I had a PIA problem with my SBM. Someone before me had replaced the sockets with machine pinned sockets and the brand new 6821 I put in did not seat in it well enough. Ended up putting the old one back in. Weird...

#10 11 years ago

I reflowed the solder on the pia's, and u14. no help.
Am going to order a new 6821 anyway, can't hurt to have them on hand.

I have uploaded the clip to:

There is a quick Flicker, Bright On, a few second delay, and then 6 flashes
followed by powerup tune.

Is this correct?

Just printed out the J2 pinouts and switch matrix, so I'm going to
delve into that "stuck switch" tomorrow...

#11 11 years ago

The diagnostics were correct. In the 8 switches with #34
I found 1 with a bad diode (it was only the 4th one I unsoldered).

I have put together and attached fairly comprehensive switch matrix
table - it includes the MPU J2 Pin Numbers, Wire Color, Signal Name,
Switch Name, and Switch Number.

I have included the PDF, and also the CSV file (Rename .txt to .csv!)

Finally got it going again. I changed all the diodes on the solenoids, and there were
five transistors that were blown.

Now I need to refresh my TIP 102's. Maybe its time to get an Ultimate Solenoid Driver-- the reviews are good. Anyone used it in real life?

#13 11 years ago

5 transistors!

Glad you got it going.

#14 11 years ago

If you had five blown transistors you might have a bad 3081,

I have fixed a board where every transistor in the 3081 was toasted and every tip120 connected to the 3081. What a pain in the ass.

What the hell did you kids do to it, short across the coil lugs of 5 coils. eep!

What they did was they were pushing all the buttons at the same time, continuously
Slingshots, pop bumpers (yep, the kids got bit!)

Thanks for the old thread. Same problem on my SBM 6 flashes. Was caused by F4 fuse blowing because Q13 on the SDB was shorting.
