It's a disposable part, and Stern is replacing them for free.

Stern sending me new flippers and a new score reel. I will also say rubbers are sub par . With very little play i am having to change out broken rubbers

This is definitely not new. It's been the case at LEAST since Tron...

Quoted from Zablon:

I don't know, seems like it would make sense to play the hell out of one of them (not going to customers) to check for any bad parts, before going and making them all. This particular issue isn't a few years of play, this is a few days. It looks bad. The whole "i've been in this for decades and it is just how it is" doesn't cut it when you are dealing with people who aren't pinheads who just dropped 8k on a toy. Pride and quality is a lost art these days.

It's a general QA issue in manufacturing. You get a huge shipment of parts, you test maybe 5% of them, and accept/reject the whole shipment based on how the few randomly selected parts perform and match the specification. They don't have the time to really test each and every single contracted part before it goes to the assembly line.

All large-scale manufacturers who rely on outside vendors operate like this.

Quoted from turbo2nr:

My playing field really dimpled for only a week of play. Soft wood! Im coating mine in very hard epoxy next week.

But you're putting bottle openers on this precious thing that you can't stand to see a dimple in..lol.

Let us know how that epoxy works out...

I'm sure the flipper supplier found the gas problem in a few hours and it's back to normal.

People make mistakes running machinery and don't even know it.

You get 1100 flippers in a box (maybe even more on the 2" ones). If 90 are bad due to poor welds, it's not like you can visually find the problem ones. Maybe Stern already replaced a bunch that broke after a single flip in testing.

You said the magic phrase, it's a toy.

It's not a child car seat, it's not an airbag, it's not a heart monitor.

It's a toy for rich people.

If you are not a pinhead, you call the 800 number, and Stern sends you a new set of flippers - same as anyone else

#107 4 months ago

What I get tired of hearing on here is people saying grow a pair when something breaks, and those that scream, for $8K we should expect more from a toy. What they should be saying is we expect more from a $8K machine made to be used as a way to make an honest living. If you want a toy, pay the $49.95 for a marble in a plastic box with 2 AA batteries, 4 blinking LEDs, and cabinet legs made by Rubbermaid. Walmart has plenty of toys to choose from.

I think the mindset of the company is what makes the product from that company great or worth crap.

Stern is not who I want making my boutique contract pinball machine if I want it for HUO, because Stern will not care about these machines like they care about a run of Pros off their line for themselves. These things were thrown together, flipped a few times and boxed. Any defects will be handled after the fact. From the factory tours I have taken over the years, the actual amount of care taken on the final inspection seemed higher on the Pros than on any other model. This makes sense if your major market is ops using Pros to make money.

Child car seats get recalled, and they are made by companies who love and care about children.

Car seats are one of the most tested and regulated products in the world, yet things still go wrong.

Pinball machines have about 9,000 more parts than a car seat.

#109 4 months ago

@vid1900, I get that, but nobody is expecting a pinball machine to save their childs life either... so the outrage is somewhat different, don’t you think?

Yes I agree.

The way people carry on here is much worse than parents who've had their child safety seats recalled. Much higher level of outrage.

#111 4 months ago

crazylevi, that wasn’t the actual gist of my initial thought, but your take is 150% accurate for Pinside. Lol

Quoted from Bublehead:

This is the problem with analogies. Child seats cost considerably less, have many different manufacturers to buy from, and if a childseat fails, those people will sue for millions. Not really an option with pinball machines. The best we can do is complain and hope things get better or just not buy.

Exactly.

That's that problem with sad people.

They are OUTRAGED that a piece of plastic/metal on a toy broke.

Even worse, it's people who did not even buy the toy that are outraged, lol

It's a toy.

Them's fightin' words.

#116 4 months ago
Quoted from dnapac:

The pic makes me sick. This type of damage should not happen on a new machine. I’m pretty relaxed about things with pinball, but this is a boutique/limited machine...Stern should send a new machine.

I agree - BMW replaced my car for something less...

Who would have thought that in 2019 they'd still be making painted wooden toys?

(And adults would fight like toddlers over them?)

g

Its a £10,000 toy, the top end of the toy bracket and despite saying they do- they haven't even tested it, that's why people are outraged. remember the video of GB playfield inspectors who's light wasn't even plugged in...

Just don't buy them, and don't get involved in threads about things you did not buy.

I don't agree with this at all. You are basically dismissing anyone who is concerned about quality. It doesn't matter if someone has bought or not because after you buy it, it is too late. Regardless of this pin or any pinball it's the wrong attitude to have. I'm not outraged, but every new thing that pops up (which is a good thing to know about) further tells me not to waste my money on bad products. You can take that and have the 'better off that way' all you want, it doesn't change the fact that the use case for these things have changed and the majority of people have an expectation of some sort of quality. I'm expressing my dismay and yes it will impact future purchase decisions, and not in a good way. if the goal is to make less people buy machines, then sure, I guess that attitude works. Not everyone is so addicted that they'll dismiss every little thing with some excuse.

P.S.: I am not discounting the fact they are replacing the parts (which they should be), that isn't the issue here, but this is one more example of shoddy workmanship.

That's what I'm saying.

If you can become outraged over a TOY, don't buy it.

You don't need the headache.

Every moving part of a pinball machine is going to break, maybe the day you get it, maybe years from now.

If you heart cant take it, don't buy it.

#122 4 months ago
Quoted from Zablon:

It's a disposable part.

The same company in IL has been making those same flippers, with the same specs, for over 60 years.

If you concerned about "quality", you are going to have to face the fact that EVERY product will have some defective units reach the public.

No amount of testing can catch every defect.

Sorry.

stern did replace my entire GB playfield...

#124 4 months ago
Quoted from NeilMcRae:

stern did replace my entire GB playfield...

Yep, and JJP replaced a ton of playfields, and gave other owners stickers to cover the damage.

As long as the manufacturer stands behind it's products, real men can handle normal production defects without outrage.

#125 4 months ago

Look it up people- statistically 100% inspection only delivers like 97% defect free parts so even if Stern inspected 100% of their machines, 3% are going to have delivered defects. This is true of EVERY manufacturer, not just Stern. It worked when it left the factory floor, that is all Stern is delivering or cares about. I expect this and accept it. The only thing in this thread that has made me angry is the damage to the playfield due to a dragging flipper. That would tend to boil the old blood for me. Not sure what Stern would or could do either if faced with it but say “sorry”?

If you ordered a BMW and it was delivered with a scratch on the hood, I’m sure you’d want it replaced or repainted.

That's the benefit of buying from a local dealer, rather than mail-order.

Your local distro would have seen the "angel wing" problem, and polished it out before delivering it to you.

You would have never even known it happened.

Then that would certainly rectify the problem. A good local dealer is very important.

I've been on my own since I left the motherland at 15.

So yeah, I might know a thing or two about being a real man.

Lol....white, clean cornhole bags i normally use as weights to flatten concert posters.
I dont play cornhole. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

No scratch from the little white beanbags if they touch something fragile

The best part of the Primus machine is the artwork and you've managed to wash it out with purple lights.

Thanks for the feedback douche!

You have not even seen it with all the lights on yet. Only upside down missing the white rubbers that block a third of the light.

Ill do whatever i want with my toys. Thanks.

Many dark areas needed extra lighting in my opinion. These also light up the dark plastics from below.

If you are going to add colored extra lighting for a game you better be ready for some opinions that don't like it. That's no reason for name calling. I like some of the lighting stuff but actually agree with Mitch on this one. With that said purple does not photo well so it's impossible for us to know what it will exactly look like. For me it's just to much for a retro theme and it doesn't complement the art as well as warm white would.

But, it's your game and as long as you dig it nothing else matters. I have plenty of stuff on some of my games that others would throw in the garbage.

#143 4 months ago

For sure there is no purple on this machine already.

It's not of matter of blending purple lights to match other purple areas on the game. Colored GI in general mutes the colors of the playfield. Some people love it and I actually really like it on some games. I think Mitch was just saying that since the game is essentially an awesome piece of art why mute any of it. Opinions on lighting will differ though.

I just added White LEDs
How about wait for comments at least until i power up the damn machine, eh?
