Hello Everyone,

I'm interested in a Diner pinball machine nearby. I've been a LONG time pinball enthusiast (since I could reach the flippers standing in a chair), but have never owned one and don't know the first thing about maintenance, repairs, etc. NOTHING whatsoever. One of the main reasons I'd like to purchase a machine is to learn these things so I can see if I am interested in the game beyond simply playing it. I love to learn, and I can usually "figure" most things out if I have some sort of starting point (such as, in this case, schematics).

I went to take a look at it today, and found that it was not in as good of condition as I was expecting/hoping. The owner did not open the machine up or take the glass off so I could inspect more closely. The backbox wasn't opened so I could see the boards or anything. I would want to see these things before agreeing to buy.

The machine is NOT a diamond plate, and has the silver habitrail.

- Buzzing sound coming from speakers (I guess this is common with System 11)
- None of the EAT letters light above the playfield in the back (not sure if this is 3 blown bulbs or some other issue)
- Two broken plastics - center plastic above the 3 drop targets is busted, and one of the ice creams has some damage to a lesser extent. i see a replacement center plastic is available, and all plastics are available as a set as well.
- Playfield shows wear where the balls drop from the ramps into the inlanes.
- Lots of areas on the playfield where there are black streaks from the ball. Not sure if these are just grime or if there is wear underneath.
- Mylar is peeling on the right near one of the lanes, to the extent that probably 1/2 inch is sticking up off the playfield. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of it.
- Several light bulbs don't appear to work, and the rubbers and posts have seen better days (needs a shop job - seems reasonably cheap parts wise, and I'm excited for the labor of doing all of that and really making it look great). Parts wise cost, it really doesn't seem like that big of a deal.
- on the outside, there are some subtle scratches on both sides of the cabinet body. There is fairly moderate damage to the left side of the backbox, with a gouge all the way to the wood about the size of a nickel. The backbox on that side is also missing a bolt, and there is a cracked spot on the edge of the backbox that faces the player.
- The plunger seemed a little weak
- The right button felt a little odd, but both flippers appeared to have plenty of power. The flipper buttons themselves are mismatched (one is clear red, other is solid red.
- a few of the diner patrons in the backglass appeared to be leaning forward quite a bit, but they did move when I shook the machine.
- Everything did appear to function. The ramp opened for ball lock, the coffee cup registered the score, the drop targets functioned as expected, bumpers and pops, kickout holes, ramps etc. the sound was fine.
- The game was not displaying any errors, but we did not access any admin menus and maybe some errors are only displayed there?
- Lots of areas where there appeared to be bubbling around the inserts.
- The most important cosmetic issue for me is the apron. The fork and spoon in the apron are totally roached out. I am not sure what happened, but it literally looks like someone scraped the paint right off. Maybe there was originally a state commission sticker there or something and someone tried to remove it? No big deal - buy some decals right? Well, unfortunately, Diner replacement apron or even a decal seems to be unobtainable as of now. If anyone has any idea on how to solve that, let me know.

After my phone charges up some, I'll add some photos. Please let me know your thoughts on what you think it might be worth. I know it's a fairly expensive game for what it is because they didn't make that many of them and they are fairly hard to come by.

Thank you for your time.

A picture is worth a thousand words ( literally).

Added some photos - in the photo near the Today's special kickout, you can see the peeling mylar and also there is some playfield wear to the extent that the paint is totally missing.

And here is an image of the apron damage I'm referring to.

You have been here for 7 yrs. Time to jump in.

#6 5 years ago

I agree. What would you say is a fair price for it?

#7 5 years ago

They made 3,500 of them so it's not a rare machine. What you show is typical SYS11 wear on a game of this age and much nicer than some I've seen. Fair price would be $2,100.

2k is decent. If it plays fine, it’s worth it. Apron wear kinda sucks. The rest of the stuff if fixable, or won’t be noticed.

Edit: schudel5 beat me to it. If you can get it for less, go for it.

#9 5 years ago

I would also say $2100. Your description made it sound like a $1500 game. Before buying ask yourself if you will be satisfied or if you are the type of buyer who needs something near perfect.

How does it play? Love a players Diner.
Check those boards, does he have keys?

Looks fair enough, but considering the above and a full shop job, Im under 2k for this particular example.

#11 5 years ago

Game looks very nice. I’d say $2300

#12 5 years ago

I offered the seller (who was asking 2100) 2000 and he accepted. I'm planning to get it tomorrow!

#13 5 years ago

My dad bought this game for 2k and it was probably in better condition, but it's hard to call it a bad deal. The game is really fun.

#14 5 years ago

I'd offer $15oo. New reproduction playfield on the way soon. That's like $900. Then any misc parts/upgrades you might need/want- puts you in around $3k. You'd have a nice game at that point.

#15 5 years ago

Normal-ass players game. The wear and stuff you're seeing is pretty typical. Cleaned up it's high 2s. Based on pics, I'd agree with the people saying $2100. Your description had me thinking $1700. That's a weekend away from being a nice players game.

#16 5 years ago

Congrats, as long as there is no battery damage on boards you’ll be ok.

#17 5 years ago

That’s in bad shape
Not worth more then $1500

I owned 3 in the past and all looked way better then this , sold around $2000-$2600

#18 5 years ago

Yea im really surprised by the 2k+ comments.....id say more around 1500-1750.....

I think a majority of Diners went to your end of the country. They are harder to find in many other parts. Just my thought on it. I know a number of people who would buy one if available here.

Are player's condition System 11's really going for $2k+ now? I guess I'm out of the loop.

Depends on the game I guess but the short answer... yes

#22 5 years ago

$2k-$2500 as it sits.

I probably wouldn't pay more than $1700 but I don't set the market.

#23 5 years ago

2K or less... but I would not pay that for it. No pics of the ramps, center PF, or boards... the most important pics.

#24 5 years ago

Unshopped and messed up apron. I'd say $1800.

If that's very nice, then what does not "nice" look like. I don't think this PF's overall condition is that nice at all.

So I got it inside and all set up. I realized it when I turn the power off I was getting an adjust failure. I had to research what this meant because I'm a total noob. Of course this points to likely battery failure. Open up the backbox and look for the batteries but couldn't find them. Did a little more research to find out exactly where they would be and realized they were hiding behind a ribbon cable. It turns out that it has already been modded with Frank's battery board.

The board uses a CR2032 was just so happens to be the same battery that is in my key for my car so I had one lying around. No more adjust failure.
