I'd like to compile a list of game prices over time, adjusted for inflation to see how much things have really changed over time. http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?

Can you supply us with the year, the game title, it's NIB price (no tax, no shipping)

The goal is to include standard retail pricing only -- (not closeout pricing, not distributor cost, no discounts, etc.)

Any year, any title is fine. Just help us paint a picture...

If you know of links to compilations that are already complete, feel free to link it as well.

If you can snap and share a pic of the receipt, that would be a bonus...

thanks!

How should I account for:

1. did you pay tax?
2. did you pay shipping (to your home -- not a required fee to ship to the distributor)?

this could turn into 4 lists. We want just 1. =)

I'm thinking I need to ask each person to make their "best guess" at stripping tax and shipping... is that fair?

Quoted from pinballholder:

Yeah, we just care about cost of pin. Shipping and tax are a product of location and can dramatically change costs (+/- 10% potentially).

Fair. Adjusted rules to:

no tax, no shipping -- you gotta do your best arithmetrickery on your price.

Quoted from Eric_S:

In 2008 I bought Family Guy NIB for $3950 shipped.

Can I ask you to kindly please strip tax/shipping on that magic #?

Quoted from Monster_Bash:

Picked up my FGY for $3600 out the door.
RFM was the exact same price shipped..so probably $3400ish
Still got'em both

Quoted from jfh:

Medieval Madness 8/1997. $3855
RFM 7/1999 $4167
Monopoly ?/2001. $3567
All include tax and delivery and probably were $200-$400 higher then they should have been. SWE1 was a few hundred dollars less, but I don't remember the specifics.

Looking forward to numbers w/ no tax no shipping...

#36 9 years ago

I'm no expert on pricing -- please thumbs up/down the prices you want included in the list.
I'll do my best to only include the ones that are no tax, no ship, no discount. Your thumbs would be appreciated.

Just for fun, let's see if we can include a price from every year from the solid state era (at least)...

Every 10 inputs, I'll post the two very interesting numbers:

Actual Retail Average: x
Adjusted Average Retail Price: y

It's the difference between x and y where it gets really interesting...

In my brain, movie tickets "should be" $3-5 (since that's what I paid in my high school years). But my brain hasn't adjusted for inflation to think that $10-$11 is reasonable. I honestly think it's all cock-a-mahooey pricing!!! I laugh at idiots (like me) who spend $11 on a movie, hahahaha... wait...

1986->2014 pricing = 2.17x adjustment. So a $5 ticket SHOULD be $11. Sigh... Prices haven't changed at all !!! (but I'll have nothing of it !!! I refuse to adjust.)

Looking forward to some early 80's and sys11 pricing...

Quoted from stooped:

$3400 MM 1997 from my local amusement company. AFM a year earlier was a little less. Still my best games.

Do you think that was $3400 (no tax no shipping?)
thanks,

Quoted from MrBally:

Williams EM Gold Rush (1971) was $865.16 as follows:
Game $779.00
4% Michigan sales tax $31.16
"Factory freight" (From Chicago to the Detroit distributor: Martin & Snyder: $55.00
Keep in mind back then, you could only buy from distributors, they all added a charge for shipping from Chicago to their location. You picked up from there or paid an additional delivery charge.
I remember a rare "Drop ship" of an Atari Pole Position (sit down) from California right to the Operator I worked for's location. It was bought from a distributor with no freight charge. We had to cut a check to the LTL freight company and give it to the truck driver. it was something like $200.00 back in '83 or whenever.

In this case, that "required shipping" sounds like part of the base price, but I didn't think tax should be part of this, since every state has different tax laws. What do you think?

RESULTS ARE IN FROM FIRST 10 NIBs (1971-2007).
Prices are adjusted for inflation for 2014.

Average: $5113
High: $5938
Low: $3903

Folks, I know it's early in the investigation, and the bias in the data points is towards "recent" machines. We still have 30 years of machines to plunk into our spreadsheet to get a more complete picture.

When we get to 20 NIBs, I'll gladly post a graph to show our progress to compare actual prices to adjusted, and show how nicely flat the "adjusted" prices are over time.
