Quoted from Tsskinne:

They are not. I recently discovered Bally backglasses are slightly taller. At least my old frontier backglass wouldn’t fit into my Stern Pinball head, but my Stars backglass did

ohhh that's interesting, i am gonna have to try that later

#3152 3 years ago
Quoted from play_pinball:

Anyone know a source for the long screws and cupped washers that secure the apron to the playfield?

i got mine, in stainless at Ace no problem. i actually got the space and fender washer to go through the front of the Apron as well as the metal spacer and long screw by the center hole... all new nice and shiny!

#3153 3 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

It is wood. That would be an easy problem to overcome. But nice to know.
But you do make me question this: Are the back glass size for Bally and Stern the same?

Oh, you can drill new holes, but it won't work as a stock Bally cabinet.

Yep, what Tommy said. Bally backglasses are taller than Sterns.

Does anybody have plans for making a stern or bally cab from scratch? Would be an awesome business shipping these in a flat pack.

Quoted from Chalkey:

cosmokramer diligently looked into offering cab's, not necessarily early Stern, sadly shipping was a major headache:

I talked to Paul at Virtua Pins about building a cab for my Seawitch. He would pay for me to ship my old cab and back box to him. His crew would break it down, reverse engineer it and send me back a new cab for $750.00. I never acted on that.

If someone were to send him a cab he would at least be in a position to make flat packs. His Williams cab flat packs cost around $300.00. So, by the time you put it all together, your sweat equity will be around another $300.00.

What did you do in order to get him to respond? I've tried e-mailing a few times about making Williams System 3-7 backboxes, but never heard any response at all. I kinda gave up.

Quoted from Thrillhouse:

Any of the big 3 hardware store should have them. The screws are 10-32 fine thread and the cupped washers are just #10's. Ace is your best bet but I've found them at lowes also

They are labeled ‘finishing washers’.

Before I bought a real pinball and joined pinside, I had built a visual pinball and donated for a lifetime membership at VP Forums. I had also set up a Linked In "membership" and he reached out to me on LI. Other than that, I don't know. I think I contacted him via his website and the next thing I know he is calling me while on his drive to work.

But I am thinking he probably would not consider a new item unless you had a donor that you could send to him.

But I really have no clue.

I would jump on a $300 flat pack in a hot minute.

I found an old post by Vid and LTG I think, to get any hardware like that from Bolt Depot (boltdepot.com). They have great prices and have anything you could want. I had a hard time finding any screws used on early solid state machines at local hardware stores.

For my Stars I got (#10 x 32 x 3” slotted flat head) to secure my apron and #10 finishing washers. Looked factory.

#3162 3 years ago

I sent Paul a Trident cab to build a new cab for my Star Gazer project. He’s been working on it for awhile. I shipped the doner cab almost two years ago. If he ever finishes it, he should be able to make more. If you contact him he might be more motivated to finish this so he can make others. Maybe he’ll build two right away.

I contacted cosmokramer too, about older cabinets.
He was more interested in the new designs. I believe
because they are less of a headache.

Well, from seeing some of my other cards, an owner asked if I could come up with something for Seawitch. Here are the results, and the price is the same as my other sets at $10 including US postage. Please PM me if interested in purchasing.

I have a Seawitch. I just sent you a PM.

I also have a Big Game, a Nine Ball, Catacomb and a Dragonfist that could use some card love.

Where does one find replacement drop target assemblies? In my dreams only?

#3169 3 years ago

A $300 flat pack would be amazing. I got 5 on that 750 for whoever has a classic bally/ stern to send.

#3170 3 years ago

My quicksilver doesn't have a post where the drops are but I can't understand why they would add it, It gets a lot of abuse and the star post on my went and took the plastic above it with it.

#3171 3 years ago

Folks

I've got an Ali and the flippers on it seem strange.

Does Ali have the same setup as Nine Ball / Quicksilver? We think the flipper base plates might have been changed...

Could someone take a picture of their underside?

Neil.

Ask around. This thread is a good place to start.

If you are talking about the plastic drop targets you can buy them from Pinball Resource, much cheaper than Marcos. Order drop target springs while you’re at it (1 per drop) to rebuild your drop target banks.

If you’re interested in building a QS or SG from scratch and have no playfield parts, look for a populated Playfield (any title). Create a search alert on ebay for stern pinball. Network to find the parts needed.

No, Ali has the earlier type 1 flipper mechs in them, shorter bushing, flat plate, shorter bat shaft. The change to the offset baseplate type occurred sometime during the production of Big Game.

Having one Lectronamo is cool but having 2 is better !

OK. So, if I were to put 6 digit displays in a 7 digit game (say, "Stingray" displays in a "Quicksilver"), would it work? I would think that just the 7th digit "0" would obviously not display, but (correct me if I'm wrong) that digit doesn't really change on 7-digit games right?

I realize having a 7-digit display in that game would be best, but I may save some money reusing some old displays.

You'd have to move some wires in the display connectors to do this. The 7th digit that would not display is the millions digit.

Just buy some pinitech displays and sell the 6 digit ones to people that want working ones to recoup some of your costs.

If you need everything just upgrade them to the newer style offset type. They play the same and parts are readily available for that type.

Here’s the bushing:
https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/4A-111-W-1

As for the shorter bat shaft, I’m not sure why that truly matters if the shaft just sticks through the bushing a 1/4” or so more. Replacement flippers don’t have the notch cut out for a specific height.

The cheapest way to get all the parts for a flipper assembly is the complete assembly from Pinball Life.

This is the style that was installed on Big Game. They used to have the style for Ali but I cannot find it.

There is a left side and a right side. You have 5 coils to choose from. Research which coil you want.

If you are not getting the bats with the set screw groove, you are going to have a ton of trouble trying to remove those bats in the future. PBL has the bats with the grooves / reliefs.

#3188 3 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

Research which coil you want.

You can get hotter coils and open up the EOS switch a little bit larger than normal if they turn out to be too hot. Definitely don't put 450's in it though.

People were obsessed about 15 years ago with putting 450's and 475's in their classic sterns - not needed in most cases. Double level games, definitely, or wide bodies, maybe.

#3189 3 years ago

The second machine that I just got has a backglass that’s a 9.5/10. Made the change over and it now completes the game rebuild.

I have a friend looking for the bonus/timer display driver board on Lightning. It is missing. From the manual, the part # is A-866 or also 34C-866-S. I know it's very unlikely that any after market boards are made. Did any other Classic Sterns use this driver board?

Also, after taking the photo, I see it could also be called BTI-100 (bonus timer interface).

They are not correct. Sad. They are the only game in town.

The problem: Between the two card holders it is supposed to say: Stern Electronics Inc.

All they say is: Stern Electronic

#3197 3 years ago

Upon request of some owners, I've created a couple of new apron card sets to offer: Big Game and Stingray.

Like all my other cards, they are printed on a photo quality printer using OEM inks and thick ultra gloss paper then a clear gloss vinyl overlay is applied, cut to size and edges are colored.

Price is $10 per set of 2, so please PM me if interested in purchasing.
