Quoted from dothedoo:

Yes, I pulled 200 windings off the 26-1200 pops in my Xenon.

I pulled 200 off of the stock J26-1200's last night & definitely helped...... I can live with where they are at now. I did notice that the total plunger travel on these Stern Pops is about 1/8"-3/16" less than the travel of a Bally pop assembly of the same era..... I may play around with increasing travel tonight just to see what it does.

#3052 3 years ago

Changing the metal ring and hoop to the later style plastic rod and ring does wonders to speed up the pop's response.

To keep the thrill going, take a couple of J26-1200 pop coils and replace the 1500s in the sling shots with the 1200s.

When does everybody replace their old flippers? I have a few games where they appear to be pretty old, but they still function and feel right.

No reason to if you don't mind the way they look.

Seawitch I am finishing finally after year & half. I picked this up as a basket case at the York show 2018. Greatwich BG, swapped in a better PF I found on ebay, I touched up & cleared. Alltek MPU/SD boards, rebuilt Stern LD board & rebuilt SB300, new rectifier. Repainted the cab, new rails, rebuilt all mechs, cpr plastics, new PF glass etc. etc.

I increased plunger travel .150" on the pops as well after trimming 200 windings from each coil, thing is playing awesome, what an addictive game. Waiting on cap kit for the sound board which should be here tomorrow & need to repair the #3&4 score displays & she's pretty much done. I was originally restoring this to keep it...... then I decided I'd sell it, & now after getting it done & how fun it is the play, I'm going to have hard time letting it go if I decide to. By far the most fun game I've restored.

Well, I guess I was looking for a bit more thought around the optical performance vs. a new set, but I probably didn't convey it correctly.

I agreed you should. Check out djblouw thread on his, he is almost done with his. I still have to start the cabinet for this one.

Quoted from cottonm4:

My Hot Hand had a slotted receiver and lockdown bar. I have no explanation for it. The pin was not beat up so I assume the lockdown/receiver assembly were original.

My Hot Hand SN 8381 has the slotted receiver too.

#3065 3 years ago
Quoted from Quench:

Love my Hot Hand..
There's actually two unpopulated switches in the switch matrix that spot the Ace. One scores 500 points, the other scores endlessly like the upper pockets.

Wanted to find these for years, finally had the time. Didn't see it anywhere else so: The 500 point Ace is SW 22, the endless scoring Ace is SW 38.

#3066 3 years ago
Quoted from RoyGBev:

I have a Hot Hand bar receiver and it is also slotted.

I've added this info to the http://www.pinwiki.com site.
I've also changed my Tech Chart accordingly, but left the "not used" info there too.

Are you considering rewiring one of the Hot Hand playfield switches to spot the Ace?

#3069 3 years ago
Quoted from Quench:

No, I like the difficulty.

I think the idea someone had of building the second card immediately after completing the first (on the same ball) is a good one. Looking to go through the program in pinmame and on paper and understand it. Got started four years ago (with Bally 6M$M) but then got too busy and stopped. Did some 6800 programming years (actually decades) ago.

Agreed, it would be too easy otherwise

That was me. I'll be implementing it with other features after I'm done with some current projects.

Hey fellow classic Stern Electronics lovers! I'm not working as much and my location is shut down so in my spare time I've been trying to find some other ways to occupy myself and bring in a little income if I can. I came up with the idea to design some lapel pins based off of my favorite stern electronics machines and figured that a few of you would probably also like a set. I ended up just doing a run of 100 pins, and I'm keeping 1 set for myself so there are 99 available. I will be shipping all orders the week of May 4th so if you want some go ahead and use the pinside shop that I set up. If you don't no big deal, but they probably make a great gift for your fellow pinheads

Hope you like them, have a good one. -Tommy

I still have an extra Wild Fyre translite if anyone is interested, make offer in PM.
Includes back masking layer and newly developed mirror vinyl front layer.

I might have a chance at a Stars pinball machine. I have not seen it yet, but I'm told it is in nice condition with a nice back glass.

What is a Stars worth? Or what was one worth before this virus came along?

Thanks

Projects were probably a little under a grand, nicer ones in the $1300-1400 dollar range. It had been trending up over the last couple of years.

Just got my Stars running recently and i love it!

The chimes are great, ripping both spinners is so satisfying, and chasing the 100k shot is a blast! I'd grab it while it's still available. I don't plan on letting mine go anytime soon. It'll eventually find it's home in my lineup next to my Nine Ball, another Steve Kirk masterpiece.

Btw, a quick update for anyone with a Stern game that uses a chime box: these are the parts the Pinball Resource recommended for rebuilding it. I bought the parts from them and they work great.

8x Gottlieb 2752 Grommet
8x Bally M122-24 Eyelet
4x Short bell sleeve (flanged coil sleeve)
4x Bally Plunger A550-6

I remember arguing years ago about this popular replacement back then - people didn't have the patience to source the correct parts to fix the original mechs properly, and yup, williams flippers just aren't correct in classic stern games.

I wish the artwork was better on Nugent. It's too Fangango-y.

I’ll say The lectronamo layout uses the rule set better than Nugent. Definitely a fan of Lectronamo. It’s fun to see which game uses the shared rom better than the other. Clearly a winner in each sharing.

Stern backbox light panels display brackets are screwed in on backside of panel for players 1-4 but credit display is screwed on front .

Why?

Bally games are all screwed in front of light panel.

It's because stern's 7 digit display board is deeper than their 6 digit. Bally's 6 digit and 7 digit display boards are the same depth.

Stern 7-digit driver boards were longer than Bally 7-digit boards, and Stern 6-digit boards.
So, anything that is 7 digits, needed to be screwed in from the backside.

One of the reasons why I used Bally 7-digits in my Meteor instead of Stern 7-digits.

Meteor is/was a 6-digit pin. How are you incorporating 7-digits and making them work?

With 7 digit software, of course.

What he said!

I added my extra wire, and put in a 1-pin Molex connection, so in the (rare) case I wanted to go back to 6 digits, I can without blowing anything up.

You can switch back and forth between 6 and 7 digit displays without disconnecting the wire - it doesn't connect to anything on a 6 digit display.

Quoted from slochar:

I based it off the schematics, which showed the 'BLANK' signal being shorted to pin 11 on a 6-digit display, and figured that could cause issues if a 7-digit ROM was run in it with 6-digit displays, as the 7-th digit signal would be seen as a blanking?

If I'm wrong, o-well, I have an extra molex plug.

Good info. Never compared stern & Bally display boards side by side for size.

Anybody have a recommend for a place to snag some green (or white with gel) LED score replacements for my quicksilver? The plasma ones in it now are def. starting to show their age. Thanks!

Thanks. Looks like they only have the kits in stock vs. assembled. Slightly worried about mucking things up, but seems like it could be a fun project to force me into doing board work

Go for it! You gotta start somewhere! I never thought I'd be up to doing board work, but with practice and patience i managed to get there. I still make mistakes sometimes, but I've come to learn a lot of mistakes can be fixed (even if the fix is a bit unsightly )

I've always wanted to order a set of those displays to assemble. Heck, I'll assemble them for ya if you can't seem to make it happen. (Of course that would mean sending them down here and back, but that's totally up to you--just thought I'd offer since I'm currently unemployed and enjoy that sort of work for the most part).....i think you can do it though. Just gotta have the right tools and a bit of practice.

Appreciate the offer and pep talk! I have some junk boards I’ve been practicing de-soldering on. Guess I can just do the reverse while I wait for the kit.

Have decent enough tools, so you’ve pushed me off the cliff... the kit it is, thanks!

Stars restoration coming along slowly.........Display board done. New sockets/braid cleaned wiring & re-pinned, sanded board down with 320, cleaned up/repaired socket holes, chemically dipped & clear coated display holders.
