Thought you guys might like to see my latest pick up.

1979 Stern Cosmic Princess. Assembled in Australia by Leisure Allied Industries. (LAI)

To work around Australia (and New Zealand’s) exorbitant import taxes in the 1970s, Stern games were shipped as parts and assembled in Aussie. NZ used to do the same with Space Invaders games - we made the cabinets and tubes in NZ, and bought in the boards and controls.

There were 336 Cosmic Princess’ shipped to Perth. This was the only “Aussie only” model made. It uses the same roms as Magic. I know of 3 here in NZ - this is the nicest one of the three. Could well be others around ...

Anyway - got a lead on this one last week, and met up with the guy today. He had bought it from his neighbour a while back when the neighbour had moved out. It didn’t work when he bought it - and it still doesn’t.

Boards all look pretty tidy - Rectifier board shows signs of repair.

Game is really good condition for its age. I’ll get it going, soup it up and add it to the classic Stern row.

Nice score!!

Quoted from Fytr:

Could well be!

I’ve had to put it in the corner for now as I have a couple more pressing things to finish off (custom Led Zeppelin, full Evel Knievel restore, etc etc) so it’ll be a little while before I get her cranking.

Dude. Nice pickup. I call dibs! Beautiful Cosmic Princess.

#1458 5 years ago

Hey ... I know it’s sacrilege to post a Bally game here .. but I gotta show someone. Just pretend it’s a Stern.

Check out the gloss on the cabinet I just got back from the painter. I used to do them myself but he makes a better job and it doesn’t cost much more ... I just have to do the stencils on top.

Quoted from Mitch:

Need help with my catacomb, been fixing it up but need some info.
What's the factory playfield flipper coils and what's the factory backbox flipper coil?
Also need some pics of the piece in the backbox that holds the ball on the flipper when you remove the backglass and a pic of the gate in the backbox as mine is missing.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Quoted from cottonm4:

For the piece of broken plastic that holds the ball you can go to the toy store and maybe find a kids toy with a plastic window in the box and make one. Or you can wait until we get all of your manuals together and I can include a strip of .020 poly that you can make one with.
I can also make you a one-way gate ( I made and sold about 30 of these gates) and I can also ship it along with your manuals.
EDIT: The flipper in your back box is not the correct flipper. What you have will work but it is not correct; I don’t know if you can even locate the correct flipper. I will post a pic of mine when I get home tomorrow.

I must correct what I said about your back box flipper. Yours is correct. Same as mine. I just don't have a rubber on mine and don't know if one is supposed to be there, or not. It is certainly not needed.

Anyone know why when my sound board is plugged in on my flight 2000 the machine boots, i hear start up pings, but then the MPU restarts? I just did a capacitor replacement and replaced large chip because mpu was locking up. I've connected the ribbon cables the wrong way a bunch of times, but didn't figure 5v would kill anything.

#1461 5 years ago

So recently I did a playfield swap on my Galaxy and everything worked great. Then I put new flipper assemblies in the machine and started having issues with phantom drop targets and pop bumpers.
I already replaced all the diodes and capacitors on everything under the play field.
Swapped in different Alltek boards.
Separated the flipper wires from the rest of the play field bundle of wires.
Checked all wiring for shorts...etc.
I am still having issues...Is it possible that the Coil Relays on the memory drop targets are bad?
When I do a coil test everything works correctly.
The advanced bonus roll overs will make the drop targets go down...they are causing the Drop Relays to fire. I think this is the problem, but I am not sure how to fix it.
Anyone have any suggestions or has anyone had similar issues?

Quoted from canoncitypb:Anyone know why when my sound board is plugged in on my flight 2000 the machine boots, i hear start up pings, but then the MPU restarts?

Solved!! Here is what I found on another thread.

"Make certain that pin 34 of the sound board is not connected to the MPU. Pin 34 on J1 of the sound board and pin 34 on J5 of the MPU board is the /IRQ signal. This signal is never used by the sound board. However, if it is connected to the MPU board from the sound board, it can sometimes cause the MPU to lock up or hang. Either bend pin 34 of J1 on the sound board away from the connector (if it is even connected), or snip the pin off completely."

Thanks G-P-E!!

Cool. Can you share the link, please?

Think I figured it out. If I boot the machine then start a game then unplug the coin door and play, the game works. Looks like I need to rewire the coin door and replace the connector and hopefully I’ll be good to go.

So the last thing on this lightning is the cable that connects the speech board to the lamp driver is missing completely. It seems simple enough to make a new one, but I want to make sure that it will be wired up correctly. Is it as simple as pin 1 on the speech board to pin 1 on the lamp driver board connector? Thanks for any help!

yuck. Worked for 3 minutes and now it isn't working again. no sound at all and mpu board resets or locks up after a couple of blinks. Disconnect the sound board and everything is good again. frustrated.

Yes, the wiring harness is 1 to 1 from the speech board to the lamp driver board.

Are your sound ribbon cables new? Are the headers on the sound board and J5 of the MPU new? Flaky cables and / or crappy header pins can create all sorts of random issues. It's best to start fresh by replacing the headers and the ribbon cables, and going from there.

I built new cables and resoldered the header pins. I didn't replace the pins. I guess I could try that. They looked okay. thanks for the suggestion. I'll check back when that is done.

Thank you! Made a cable and I now have my insert lights, but still no speech. I installed the jumper between pin 5 and the top of c14 but still no dice. Any suggestions?

Here are pics of lectronimo with a strange cabinet.

It's almost 3 inches shorter then any other lectronamo cab and has a much thinner neck to make up the difference.

The playfeild is still standard size.

To make up for the thinner neck the bolt pattern in the head is very different. 3 bolts instead of 4.

Stern probably re-purposed a cabinet from another game. If sales were less than expectations on a title, standard industry practice was to redo the artwork on the cabinet and use for a new title. The other option was to break up the cabinet and toss it in a dumpster. As an example the sales of Rapid Fire were realy bad so they reused the cabinets to make Centaur II and EBD LE.

Ya that's what I figured too. Just strange how the previous game Stars all had standad cabs not the smaller ones.
If anyone has a stern em can you measure the cab for me?

#1479 4 years ago

Wow got the head mounted it sits really strange hangs off the back of the cab.

Also the front leg bolts are in the same spot as other sterns but the rear are 3/4 of a inch lower.

I am parting out my Flight 2000. It breaks my heart to do it, but I invested a ton of money in it and was still going to have to invest a lot more to get it up and running. I'm trying to get back some of the money I invested by selling some parts.

I have listed several parts on Ebay. I'd be happy to provide a 15% discount to anyone on pinside who wants to buy these off of Ebay. Let me know. I'm not selling them cheaply because I need to try to get back as much as I can.

Here's a use for a classic Stern you don't see every day, supporting the collapsed roof of a shed.

Just a little bit of work to get this up and running, but at least its in better condition than the Flash and Firepower next to it!

In the Aussie cab color combination, which makes perfect sense, because that's where you are located!
