I seen that! Very cool! Someone had shared some of these photos on the pinball enthusiasts group on Facebook. I'm very intrigued to find out more about the Stern Hypnox machine. IPDB has an excerpt saying it was only ever a prototype but supposedly there were 2 working machines at the factory before they closed their doors.

Quoted from PinFixin:

That looks to have some sort of new code associated with it?
-Pat

Yeah, he talks about it in his Galaxy thread.

#6603 2 years ago
Quoted from TheLaw:

I see I have the classic rookie 8 pin to 9 pin screw up on J1, so this should take me back to orginal coils working but still burning up on J1.

No blocking key in the connector wafer?

Quoted from TheLaw:

1 issue at a time Thanks for the help Cotton

Sometimes it takes that 2nd set of eyes.

Quoted from TheLaw:

Edit2: back on track at least. Re-connectored and now it's "just" an over heating GI issue, all coils, flippers, switches, displays working. So just some old fashioned leg work tracking that down.

Now I am confused. You no longer have the issues with your controlled lamps?

#6604 2 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

You no longer have the issues with your controlled lamps?

Correct. The misaligned J1 was the issue there.

#6605 2 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

Yeah, he talks about it in his Galaxy thread.

The new code is spectacular. My Galaxy was the loaner to Dick so that he could develop new code for it.
Next up: Lightning!

Got these 2 both up and running 100%

I posted this pic in my Quicksilver restore thread.

It shows Stern's what lengths Stern went to to keep the production line moving.

Don't have any orange-green wire in stock? Just use green-orange instead. Keep that line moving.

3 items do not match the drawing. One item is labeled incorrectly.

Yes,

Quoted from TheLaw:

Also no coils; But 7 bongs and solenoid board has proper voltage reading

I don't know if bongs will help in troubleshooting, especially seven of them.

Naw dude the bongs are for the umm...wait what were we talking aboot?

re-joined the club today.. mostly. populated playfield been in storage supposedly since the 90s, very dirty but mostly very nice too. will be a project at some point down the line, build a cabinet, buy missing pieces, figure out how to power it, do lots of wiring, etc.

nice, find, start searching for the right transformer

#6612 2 years ago
Quoted from hisokajp:

nice, find, start searching for the right transformer

Homepin made a replacement Bally transformer that I think would work, but I don't see for sale anywhere at the moment.

I was thinking about trying to find an alternative using switching power supplies like new machines and led displays so no need for high voltage. I'm probably over simplifying or missing something, but I see 43VDC (coils), 5.4VDC(controlled lamps), 11.9VDC(logic?) and 5.9VAC(GI). Is there a reason that the GI could not be DC as well instead of AC? If so, I think all of those should be easily doable.

Maybe someone smarter than I can tell me what I'm missing with that?

This playfield does have all the wiring on the back, so that's a start.

This playfield does have all the wiring on the back, so that's a start.

1) Playfield wiring is most of the battle.

2) Almost any Stern or Bally single level standard playfield cab will work. If using a early Bally cab, the playfield will plug right in to the rectifier board. If later Bally (-54 rectifier) you will have to make a minor adapter or cut off the plug.

3) Sound is easy- SB300 from Andrew which requires 12v and ground, plug to speaker and plug to speaker control.

4) Don't get too tied up on transformers- The early "small" unit from Stern works fine and there is a bizillion Bally units out there.

Pictured is Seawitch in Bally Pacman cab with Star Trek head with Flash Gordon style hinged neck. Altech MPU and SDB, Bally lamp board, Mr & Mrs Pacman transformer, Bally displays and Pacman wiring harness.

A work in progress but I can play, though with no sound at the moment since the post office has misplaced the SB300

I did not know there were 2 sizes.

#6619 2 years ago

One holds the actual targets in the drop arms, the other holds the reset arm. The original part numbers were 2A-230 and 2A-231, but obviously they're just clevis pins, so surely McMaster-Carr has replacements in that inventory list.

The pin that lifts the reset arm measures .344 or 3/8" usable length. With .21" diameter. Since .210" is .04" less than .250 that McMasters is selling, you might have to ream out the holes but I think .250-1/4" dia. is what you want.

The longer pin for the target bases is probably 1/2" usable length. .

IMG_9544 (resized).JPGIMG_9544 (resized).JPGIMG_9538 (resized).JPGIMG_9538 (resized).JPG

For length probably 3/8" and 1/2" usable length.

Screen Shot 2022-04-18 at 4.13.17 PM (resized).jpgScreen Shot 2022-04-18 at 4.13.17 PM (resized).jpg

But there is some slop on the length so I don't think length is all that critical (within reason).

I’m looking for a large drop target assembly from either a Nine Ball or a Flight 2000.

Alternatively I could use a pair of 4-drop assemblies from a Seawitch or similar.

Thanks

#6623 2 years ago

@ cottonm4 or anybody really. I had this shooter rod installed in my new to me Meteor. I don't believe it is a classic Stern rod. I think it is a Gottlieb close match that most of us use when restoring classic Sterns these days. Can anyone confirm this?

[quoted image][quoted image]

I cannot confirm, but the length looks good, but maybe a little long. A hacksaw can correct that in a couple of minutes. PBR has some Brunswick rods that look the part but they are too short.

Same with Pinball Life. PL has some nice looking shooter rods but too short.

If you put that rod into a drill and get some cleaner wax you can really shine that handle up.

#6625 2 years ago

I tossed it in my tumbler with some metal polish. That should shine it up nicely. I buy replacement Stern rods from PBR. It isn't on their webpage, but Steve has them in his secret stock. I think that is what this is. Most Classic Stern rods have the cut for the retaining clip closer to the end of the rod while Gottlieb(s) have them higher up. I was surprised to see this installed in my Meteor since it hasn't seen service in 20 years.

Wow, that's coming along nice!

In the background of photo #7 (with the laptop showing inserts) there's a white pinball machine with what looks like a red and blue scuba diver on it. (The machine would be straight across from your booth on the far side of the hall.) What is that? I don't recognize it.

Stern drops appear here often, either bricking or falling off on their own. My F2K 3-drop was doing the latter and it appears it was due to the plunger stop. The plunger would hit the stop just as the targets were reaching the ledge. The 5-drop plunger could lift the targets 1/8" or so above the ledge before hitting the stop.

I compared the stop with one from a Bally 3-drop unit. The holes are drilled about 1/16" too far in the direction of the arrows in the photo, as compared to the Bally. It made for a compressed spring washer and very tight solenoid fit.

With the Bally stop installed and spring washer free to do its job, the targets seem to reset and hold properly. One more thing to check if your targets are falling on their own.

Does anyone have a set or two of three-drop target banks, or perhaps parts to complete the ones that I have?

The project I am currently working on came with a couple of scavenged assemblies.

Marco has this that can be made into a 3-bank easily enough.

There are a few other parts Marco sells that will get you part way there. What is needed are the lift fingers and the two lift levers on the sides.

They take up any slack in the coil mech. As to if original or not, I think it was more a Bally thing. But certainly can be left if not.

Something some of you have been looming for.

I"m looking at PBL's site.

PBL says these are SECONDS. I don't know what is wrong with them, but here are some stainless steel lockdown bars for Stern/Sega/ Data East for those of you needing a lockdown bar for your classic Stern.
