Geoff just had my post edited. I'm not sure how one man can do this without power of attorney, which he does not have.

Please feel free to PM me if you want the skinny as Pinside has chosen their side apparently.

PINSIDE - TAKE NOTE - IF YOU ARE GOING TO RESTRICT FREE SPEECH - AT LEAST DO IT WITH THE CORRECT KNOWLEDGE

The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically. The Rule requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization. The Rule also gives patients rights over their health information, including rights to examine and obtain a copy of their health records, and to request corrections.

Being located in the Netherlands and not knowing Mike personally, I have no idea who's who in all of this.

This thread was brought to my attention by some of my friends on Pinside (whom I've grown to trust over years). However, I have not taken your post down because they asked me to. Actually, I'm worried about extremely personal information being spread online - via Pinside. Family affairs don't belong on public forums. Everything you post online "sticks" for many years and without knowing Mike myself (let alone having his consent) I'm not comfortable hosting that kind of info about him and his family on Pinside.

If I'm correct, this thread was meant to be support for Mike and not a place to share private affairs.

As for HIPAA, I don't know enough about American law to say anything sensible about this. Maybe this whole thread should be removed if sharing health information is not allowed. But I'll leave it to Geoff, Vid or ultimately Mike himself to ask me if they want to take it down.

Emotions can run high when you believe someone you love is being treated unfairly.

Lets leave any ex-wives, fiancées, kids and Mikes goldfish out of our discussion here. You guys can PM, email or Facebook each other for all of that drama.

Let's concentrate here on what we Pinsiders CAN do for Mike.

    Mike needs more visitors.

Bring a laptop or tablet and show him pics from Arcade Expo, Round 1, or anything else Mike may have missed in the last few months.

Play Mike the new Iron Maiden or Megadeth albums.

Remember he's stuck in a room with no internet, ipod or phone. Even a few minutes of socialization would be a godsend to him.

    #105 8 years ago

Maybe one of you nice US folk can bring him this with an ipad. ($9 well spent)

    Flashinstinct,
I dropped one of these off with Mike last week. Lets hope he continues to improve with his health and recovery and can get back to fliipin one day soon.

    #107 8 years ago

Visited Mike today. He seemed to be in good spirit.
Was excited to hear about a pinball machine that is going to be brought to facility by some of his friends!!!!
Waiting on final permission from the director.
He was trying to use my phone to find a song by Beach boys to play for his nurse.
It was a little hard for him to scroll down, but he did it! With a little help he found the song!
He needs his friends, encouragement and stimulation.
PM me for the address, anyone can go visit.
No passcode is required and visiting hours are open every day.

I rebuilt the boards to that machine, so as soon as the facility director approves it's setup, you guys will have 2 excuses to go; see Mike and play some free pinball.

For those who haven't had an opportunity to meet Mike:

When Mike and I were introduced, he started talking to me like we had already been friends. Because that is exactly who Mike is, your friend. Even when you first meet him. Always one to start or join a conversation, or make sure you know everyone else. Great guy.

    Friday update from Todd Scrutt:

    ================

Mike had a CT scan today and after reviewing it, the doctors have moved him back to Saddleback Memorial.

I saw mike yesterday and he seemed a little confused while talking to him.

I don't know if the two events are related, but I'm glad to hear he is back under direct doctor care.

Some extra prayers needed for Mike:

Mike is going into brain surgery in the next few hours.

The neurosurgeon is going to install a shunt to drain off the fluid that is putting pressure on his brain.

    #119 8 years ago

Oh, boy. Sorry to hear. Hope this does the trick.

    #120 8 years ago

Good luck brother were on your side

    #121 8 years ago

    Good luck Mike

    #122 8 years ago

    Mike is in my thoughts.

    #123 8 years ago

You're in our thoughts and prayers, Mike! Hang in there buddy! Best wishes on a smooth recovery.

    #124 8 years ago

Sending love and hope for the best.

    #125 8 years ago

    Mike is out of surgery.

    12
    #126 8 years ago

Mike is talking today and actually joking around!

He is hungry and asking when he can eat.

This is a giant improvement over the last 1.5 weeks.

The neurosurgeon said that the plastic plate that covered the hole in his skull from the prior surgery allowed the more recent swelling some room for expansion (this is a good thing), and probably saved his life.

Hopefully the permanent shunt that is now installed in mikes brain will keep any fluid pressure from ever building up again.

    Keep the prayers coming.....

    #127 8 years ago

Yay Mike! So good to hear you are doing better. Prayers and love your way Mike!

    #128 8 years ago

Thoughts and prayers with you Mike.

    #129 8 years ago

    Update from Geoff:

    ---------------------------------

Got to spend a little over an hour with Mike this afternoon, it was a very good visit and I was much relieved to see improvement.

He has a permanent shunt / drain in his skull to prevent the build up of fluid pressure in the cranium.

He still is confused and cannot carry on a full conversation, however, he can speak clearly and in complete sentences, which he was unable to do prior to the procedure.

After an hour he was very tired and needed to sleep.

    -

Unfortunately he will most likely be returning to the Costa Mesa facility.

    -

He still has a lot of involuntary muscle movement and some issues with fine motor skills.

He will hopefully be back on solid food tomorrow, with liquid supplement at night.

Should be one more day in the ICU and then a regular floor, then visitation can resume.

    -

    Have a Great Night

    Geoff

    #130 8 years ago

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike and His family.

    #131 8 years ago

I got a call from Mike today.

He has been moved out of ICU into a normal room and wants some visitors.

    He sounded really good.

He says he wants pizza from Pizza Port.

He has some short term memory returning, and could turn the speakerphone on and off himself (I find the return of fine motor control super exciting news).

He has speech and physical therapy latter today.

    #132 8 years ago

Glad to hear of his improvement and thanks for keeping us apprised, Vid.

    #133 8 years ago

Wow, that's very good. Glad to hear he is doing better!

    #134 8 years ago

    Update from Geoff:

    ------------------------------------

Mike has been moved from ICU to Room 303A at Saddleback Memorial Hospital.

He is still experiencing Short Term Memory Issues, some confusion and disorientation, though he is incrementally better since I visited him last Saturday.

    -

Primary physical medical issue is still the inability to keep food down, which prevents removal of g-tube which prevents more desirable placement.

Discussed with Medical Team, rationale of current meds, side effects and complications due to potential drug interractions.

    -

The discharge planners are looking to relocate him from the hospital to a long term care facility (possibly as soon as today).

Had a phone con with Evelyn last night and encouraged her to refuse to sign discharge papers and transfer from hospital until the feeding issue can be resolved.

Not sure if it is possible and may be a long shot, but from the time he originally discharged from hospital to long term care, he lost another 15 lbs in 3.5 weeks.

My personal belief is because he was not receiving appropriate care, and follow through regarding his dietary condition along with numerous other issues of institutional care.

It took the brain swelling event and procedure to escalate for him to be readmitted to hospital, it would be unfortunate to lose momentum and get this treated.

Do not know when he will be discharged or where he is going, however, INSURANCE refused to put him in a better closer facility than Newport Beach Long Term.

    -

For the first time I noticed a convergence of his long term memory and short term memory.

In chatting I was included in events that occurred with friends from High School as if I was there at that time.

    -

Mike is happy to have visitors and has made friends with the family members of the patient in the adjacent bed.

Arranged a phone call with his Mom and they spoke for about 5 mins.

    -

Mikes brother Greg will be arriving next week and will be staying with Mike most of the time over a 5 day period.
    -

There will be a fund raising event at a Private Pinball Club in Santa Ana on Saturday March 5th at PinballLand

Thanks to Ron and Angie for being so generous with the opportunity to get Mike some money to assist with expenses.

Some wonderful people have provided items to be raffled or included for prizes.
Will provide more details as time draws near, but if you are a non-pinballer and are interested in going so I can add you to head count.

    -

Also – anyone know a person named Todd Schutt? - PLMK

    -

Thanks for your continued prayer – thoughts and well wishes

Keeping Mike in my thoughts and prayers!

    #136 8 years ago

I talked to Mike last night.

He has been discharged from the hospital and is now at the Lake Forest Nursing Center for some rehab. http://lakeforestnursingcenter.com/

He was joking around a little and sounded stronger than the last time we spoke.

Remember he has no computer, phone, Ipad...nothing. So bring a laptop or tablet to show him and keep him up to date.

He does have an analog TV, so bring him an old DVD or VCR with some porn to watch.

He wants some visitors, so go see Mike!

Who's phone was he texting you from? He doesn't have a phone there right?

    #139 8 years ago

I think it came from Scrutt's phone, because it was a group text from you Cali guys.

hope to see a lot of folks at this event!

I was very distressed to discover all this just today, a couple months after the fact. But it suddenly explains why I did not see him at the Banning Expo, where I ran into so many people from far and wide. Anyway, you hit it exactly: he's like an instant great friend of long standing, to whatever extent there can be such a thing. I can't say that I know Mike, having seen him only about three times, mostly at Pinball Land. He's one of those rare, special people that makes an immediate connection, and you really look forward to seeing them again. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Multiple Mike reports came in all day:

    ------------------------------------

Mike had a visit from some of his coworkers from Grainger today.

At least one pinball league person, Phil, stopped by latter in the afternoon.

Craig brought In&Out (remember Mike can only keep small amounts of food down, so don't bring too much).

They have not fed Mike through his stomach tube in 2 days.

There was a video of Mike putting on his shoes for the first time, but I can't figure out how to get it off my phone and onto the web for you guys. It might be " in the cloud" and not actually in my phone - I'll talk to my IT guys tomorrow.

Mike's brother Greg from Detroit flies in this Thursday the 25th. Being a true Bodak, Greg can easily outdrink any mere mortal, so if you guys want to do some serious drinking in the next week, Greg is your guy.

Mike got moved to a room with a better TV, so he's got HDMI now if you guys can please bring stuff to show him.

Remember Mike is now at Lake Forest Nursing Center 25652 Old Trabuco Road, Lake Forest, CA 92630. There are no formal visiting hours. Come any time and help with Mike's recovery by spending some time with him. Even a short visit means a lot to Mike.

He is regaining small amounts of short-term memory, and every visitor helps.

That will mess him up. A bunch of us strangers stop by and we tell him we were his best friends. Lol.
In all do seriousness though, I don't know the guy but I have been following your thread. God speed to you Mike if you get the chance to read these messages. Life threw you a curve ball, now hit that sucker out of the park and get back behind a pin where you belong!

    #145 8 years ago
    Quoted from Jasontaps:

Back when Mike had no short term memory, I told him to write who his true friends are on his arm, so when he woke up every morning, he could review who to trust.

    -

All joking aside, Mike remembers everything before the first stroke; and just recently, he has started to be able to recall who visited him earlier in the day. A seemingly small, but amazing step.

Not to sound like a party pooper but wouldn't watching horror films and utterly violent movies increase is blood pressure whether he's aware of it or not? I'm not saying he should watch "The Sound of Music" but I'm sure there are awesome movies out there for him to watch that would keep is BP in check.
