I'm sure there's a reason, that's been elaborated on before, but aren't there possible glass substitutes out there to use for pinball?

I bought a Demolition Man that came with plexiglass cut to fit. It offered minimal security, had a bit of sag, and the flippers, of course, were much louder. Maybe halfway between glass and no glass. Additionally I had some shards of plate glass to remove from the right ramp when I bought the game. Fortunately minimal damage to the machine in whole. Thinking back I can't understand what type of environment that was in to cause an urgent need for plate glass (HUGE no no in so many ways on a pinball) let alone having that replaced again. During my operating days games usually had break ins via the coin door not the glass. There wasn't any lock bar damage unless that was also replaced.

If you are really concerned about glass breakage I'd get that safety film and put it on both sides of your tempered glass. Even then no promises to what damage you might see.

I found a picture to attach. I remember the material threw a nasty reflection of light when you looked at it the wrong way. See the wall next to the door the blotches are from light coming off the PF.....(not)glass.

Sorry for the blurry image. According to the file this picture is 9 days short of being taken 17 years ago.

I am a firm believer on old school man against machine. Turned 55 & I have not changed my way of play. It gets people complaining in league & tournament play. When I get screwed by the machine I respond. I always state that I will replace the glass for anyone if it breaks, & double down on glass if I destroy one. If it is not me I will not clean up the tempered glass remains. But warranty the playfield glass. Interested to see if other events do not banging on the glass gets the wrath of events or owners.

This thread is worth a Lazarus just so "whales" can avoid random blowholes like the OP.

Perhaps all the “Whales” will tell him to go pound glass.

Well, he is technically pounding sand

Still, if someone were to do that on my games they would be out of the house immediately.

I was at one of our local bars when out of my left ear I heard a man yell loudly. I looked over and the man in question was the cook, playing Taxi. He then proceeds to lift the front end up beyond his waist and drops it, shattering glass everywhere. The owner of the bar then yells "You know you just bought that entire pinball machine, right?"

Never seen anything like that in the hobby before or since.

I could see Taxi causing that kind of rage ! If you have that kind of anger issues, you have no business playing any kind of game !

    Is that a buyer tactic?

Yikes, over the waist is way too high.

You're not going to break Tempered glass by pounding on it with your hands.

BUT, be very warned that when we closed up my route, we threw away 100 or so sheets of playfield glass in the dumpster, and about 20 sheets WERE NOT TEMPERED.

    They broke into jagged shards

Could a whale break tempered playfield glass by pounding on it?

This always scared me. Before I shutdown my route, I bought between 400-500 sheets of glass at one time. I always replaced the glass in any pin I bought unless it was NIB so I knew I had tempered glass.

I was always afraid of a lawsuit from plate glass. You never know what a rage player or drunk would do. It was cheap insurance and piece of mind absolutely knowing the glass on my pins was tempered.

Fortunately the only glass to ever break for me on route was in my own hands and out of the machine
