You should have asked to take a picture of his ID front and back and taken a picture of his vehicle and plate. Then go on from there.
Also, shouldn’t have even messed around with PayPal, it’s a joke and so convoluted/risky. Zero protection for you, not to mention the tax forms they will be sending out when you cross a threshold dollar amount. Just get away from PayPal, all of this would have been a non issue if you hadn’t used PayPal.
