I felt it was time for all to post pictures of their best playfield touch-ups, done by yourself or someone else.
I was very impressed with what a new pinball pal of mine has done with my Stargate playfield, so I wanted to showcase it.

Post any pictures and mention if you did the touch-up or if someone did.

This was a combination of hand painted acrylic and pop ring decals that I did on Taxi. I thought it came out fairly well.

Hand painted. Colors do not match exact, slight color blindness and not listening to the wife. The lettering was done with a screen print and water slide.

A rather simple touch up from an artwork perspective, but I think it came out good. Took a bit of work to fix the damage, sand flat and level, etc.

That's nice, but you left an imprint of a phone in the finish!

Pretty work!

That Taxi and EATPM are over the top! Now back to more amateurish skills...

A pretty much junked Laser Cue that turned out pretty good for my first touch up attempt. Sorry for any blurry pics. Playfield was touched up with acrylics and spot-cleared with varathane.

Acrylics were used on the backglass except for the yellow, which was stained glass paint with a white backing. Yellow was painted last and I wish I would have learned about the stained glass paint earlier, but it was totally presentable when standing in front of the machine.

looks great, where did you get the source images for the decals?

Thanks. A collector friend of mine let me scan his NOS playfield. It was beautiful but slightly different and had to merge the images using photoshop. Unfortunately for me, his playfield was installed so I only removed his pop bumper to be able to improve the use of my HP4600 floating scanner.

#19 8 years ago

It counts if it was the whole playfield, right?

Pinwhiz70, your TOTAN touchups look nice. I did about the same type of work on a friend's, but I only sanded down the wood area and left it as that instead of trying to color in the sides of the drop holes.

Gov, Great work taping off that Taxi playfield. How long did it take to tape off? What type of paint did you use? I may need to do this same thing with my Bad Cats playfield.

#24 8 years ago

I just posted this restoration thread on the process I used for making decals for worn spots on a playfield: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/gottlieb-touchdown-playfield-repairs-with-waterslide-decals

Thanks. I made vinyl masks using a vinyl cutting machine to cover the art. The rest of the tape was transfer tape for vinyl application. The paint was just standard acrylic airbrush paint. Playfield was then clear coated. My dad did most of the painting and touchups, it is his machine. I just helped and made the masks and mixed the paint.

What machine do you use?

How do you prevent the paint from bleeding under the edges of the vinyl mask?

#28 8 years ago

It is a professional Roland cutter, I will have to look up the model number. The vinyl is flush so zero bleed.

Is it a tacky vinyl? What kind did you use?

#30 8 years ago

Regular vinyl like they use on cars and signs. 3mil calandered vinyl.

Did you do any sanding on the new paint touch-ups before clearcoating?

#33 8 years ago

I was debating on clearcoating the Stargate playfield after the touch-ups were done. Think I am convinced I need to do it.

#34 8 years ago

It really does make them look fantastic if it is done correctly. Just be sure to pre-drill your holes again before putting the stuff back on the playfield as it can crack the clear if you don't.

I'm F A R from artistic, but am not afraid to try. Here's a Black Hole (almost) before & after.

Did a little bit of Black touchups before this pic

After several Days (about an hour each day)
0910141318.jpg0910141318.jpg

My Space Rock was carelessly simple (my own design, similar to original) and turned out nice. The blues were hard to match, and you can see my lack of artistic ability in the pops.
Overall, it was fun, and rewarding. I believe it looks alot nicer and I finished it with a playfield protector.

#36 8 years ago

Here are some touchups that I did 3 years ago. By no means do I consider myself an artist.

Here is my addition to the mix...Funhouse Playfield in bad condition...

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/funhouse-playfield-restauration

It was my first restore (took a lot of time) and I am very pleased with it...Great thread this one. I like to see other peoples work.

You guys have some serious skills. I have a tiny spot on my TZ that I am truly terrified to tackle.

Part of it is a don't want to remove everything off the playfield.
