Quoted from Captive_Ball:

Manufacturer: Williams
Game/Type: Grand Prix / EM 4 Player
Month/Year: December 1976
Production: 10,554
Cost: Buy It Now: $775 OR Make Offer
Location: Elgin, Illinois
Link/Contact: ebay.com link
OP: Manufactured 1976 Williams Gran Prix pin ball machine. 10,554 unit s produced. Has mechanical reels, Up to 4-players.
The city displayed on the back glass is the Principality of Monaco well known for its in-town Grand Prix. It shows the harbor area known as the "S" of the swimming pool just before where cars have to sharp-turn at the "Rascasse" restaurant.
Pin ball machine works well without out mechanical issues.

Awesome deal!

Quoted from TractorDoc:

Noticed the seller ended his listing.
In his description he mentioned two other Sterns to sell -- I had inquired thru e-bay when the listing was still active and they were a Meteor and Galaxy. He said he'd sell all three for $1700 -- If I was not already full on projects and if I didn't already own a Meteor/Galaxy I'd be posting some pictures in the "What Machine did you bring home today" Thread!
Hopefully someone was able to take advantage.

It was too far from me, otherwise I would have jumped on it also!

No! That just means that I have to compete with 400 other people for a pin!

Quoted from Murphdom:

Yes it does. It all begins to look the same on the highway. My wife is originally from Maine and we have the obligatory trips we have to make there throughout the year and it’s a very long ride.
I have to commend everyone who has driven great lengths to get a pin. I haven’t mustered up the courage yet. I keep telling myself I will because I know where one is that I want but I also know it’s likely not going anywhere so I’m in no rush. Driving 13 hours round trip doesn’t seem like that much fun.

I did a 10 hr round trip for a player's condition Rollergames only a few weeks ago. Probably one of the worst distance:game ratios I've ever done lol.

UPDATE: Sold in 4 minutes

#13665 4 years ago
Quoted from Ballypin:

I was fortunate to see this ad right after it was posted. I replied right away and provided my name and phone number and the seller called me right away and I told him I would take it and pickup after work. When I spoke with him later, he said he received over 40 replies to the ad but he kept his word and sold me the game since I was the first to reply. He was offered much more than his asking price and I did pay him more than his asking price. [quoted image][quoted image]

Wow! Nice grab! I saw it posted within a few minutes too (I don't know why my pic says 3 hours), and would have jumped on it if in driving distance. Yo! Taxi!

With these estate sales, do you just show up and "get in line"? Is it an auction format? It it like a glorified garage sale? How does it work?

#13859 4 years ago

Good to know. Most of the ones posted here haven't been close enough to warrant the drive to wait in line and not know what the price is. If it were an hour or less away, yeah maybe, for a title I really wanted, but anything more than that would be wasted time, especially based off of what you guys have said. Thanks!

A smart guy like you would be able to figure out EMs in no time. Buy a cheap one (you missed out!) and start tinkering and learning! The nice thing about EMs is that everything is right in front of your eyes.

Atari Atarians

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/259715881631402/

OP: Atari Atarians Pinball machine. It’s been stored inside but in an outdoor shed for a while. It doesn’t work but with a good cleanup would look nice and I’m sure could be restored. The glass backdrop is still in good condition. The serial number is 0029, so one of the first ones made by Atari. It’s a super cool machine, just needs someone to bring it back to life. Asking $250 or best offer

WMS No Fear Project
$1850

OP:
This is a domestic restoration candidate. The boards are clean and good. The head fell down on the cabinet and broke the glass. I believe the head was hit by a forklift as ive never seen siderails this dented. The head is starting to seperate and will need repair. Backglass is good as well as display.
The playing surface will need insert decals . Ive searched and it seems they are available. Cabinet is faded. Ramp could use replacement but still intact.
This is a nice winter project for someone.
Easy pick up from my studio in Woodbury.

OP:

I have too many projects I’m not getting too and need some space. Offering up for sale is a project Devils Dare. Playfeild has some wear see pictures. It’s a players game for sure. It’s missing the sound power supply board and two 7 digit displays. Some cut wires under playfeild. Some rusted mechs. Comes with proper height legs. MPU and Sound are untested and I would assume they need repair. Sc-1 Chip is present.
Back glass is in nice shape for this game. Some lifting that can be handled with a careful triple thick job. But unlike most the art is all there.

Loadout is will be easy. It will be moved to garage before you get here.
Located just outside stevens point, wi. Cash.

Not sure why ANY of those were posted in the 'Project Pins' thread, honestly.

It's $699 on CL: denver.craigslist.org link I was thinking about it but I don't know the machine at all and have never worked on System 11's. I'll be looking for a new Bally SS project soon, tho.

I would definitely grab it for $700. Police Force is a quirky theme and fun game. You can break it down to center ramp all day, but it's fun to play the entirety of the playfield. I'd be curious to see the bottom-side of the playfield.

Looks like the CL listing is gone, so it must have been sold.

Tell the seller to be patient. How much is he asking for it?

I offered 100 for it and he said someone is offering for much more than that. I told him I would pass if that was the case. I wasnt really sure how much they go for, but I cant imagine more than 500 for a decent/good condition one.

#16576 3 years ago
Quoted from AlexF:

Heck the lockdown bar is probably worth $50. And the backglass is very nice. Not that it should be parted. I guess being an EM guy I should feel grateful some still see them as old junk.
I feel like in our area it's worth $200 to $350 as a project. Depending of course on your desire for a charming AAB reverse wedgehead with backglass animation. I had a Wing Ding with the head spray painted black. It was tedious but I got it off to reveal fair original paint underneath. Seems like the same thing here or could just do a full repaint.
Anyway, I don't have a Facebook account but it looks to be spoken for anyway.

I guess I see more value in the machine as a whole rather than as parts. I get that the parts value might exceed the value of the game in this condition, but if it's as rare as people are saying, then there is infinitely more value in keeping it whole.

In any case, the backglass and playfield seem to be in great shape, the cabinet might be solid, but can't tell from the pics. It would definitely need work though if someone were to make it presentable in any way.

Speaking of Sonic Butterfly, this posted recently in the Denver area for $1K:
cosprings.craigslist.org link
OP:
- Absolutely stunning pin with vibrant colors! Very few made and few great ones survived
- Plays and works 100%. Challenging game with strong coils and numerous fun shots.
- Very detailed internal restoration of every internal part. Pictures speak for themselves.
- Complete detailed teardown, cleaning, tuning, fixes and rebuild.
- Original plastics in great condition – no cracks or breaks, except 1 plastic carefully recreated due to “unobtainium” part.
- BEAUTIFUL backglass in MINT condition - stunning!! (If not mint its as close as it gets)
- BEAUTIFUL playfield!! Zero planking with original durable clear coat. These were known to have very nice playfields. Very minor ball trail at playfield top (see pic) and minor shooter wear at ball eject.
- Tasteful leds. Have incandescent bulbs if wanted.
- New rubbers, coil sleeves and replacement parts as needed. Manual copy included.
- Set to free play with easy jumper removal if desired.
- Cabinet does have fade, and some wear spots but presents very well. Replaced removable head panel.
- Sonic brand – Williams parts.
- Smoke free home.
- Will stage in garage for easy breakdown and pickup.
- Serious inquiries only, please.

Obviously not a project, but that a pretty machine. Very nice. If I were closer, I might consider.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/833831380760598/

This was posted on FB yesterday. I messaged him asking what games he has and generally in what condition, and he answered with one word: projects.

I doubt I'll be able to get more info from him, but if you're close and can check them out in person, Good Luck! If you do go, and you see any Gottlieb wedgeheads (AAB specifically), I would be interested!

#18737 3 years ago
Quoted from mr2xbass:

This guy is Icollectmotorcycles on eBay. For awhile (pre-covid) he was selling games on eBay starting at $1 no reserve. I bought a Gottlieb Soccer from him. Maybe he’s now sold off all the good working games and only has projects left(?). Most the games he had been listing were not perfect.

I mean, I'm interested but I can't make a 4+ hr drive just to take a look. Some pics and some info would be appreciated. Just me, but I don't think it's too much to ask. I mean, just a one word response: "Projects" seems super lazy as a seller.

#18778 3 years ago
Quoted from AlexF:

Sorry I guess? In between your posts my wife had a deal setup. I don't even have Facebook so the initial opportunity was all yours.
Everybody hates it when a seller doesn't honor the first in, until they do...and that doesn't go over either I guess. Anyway I should probably just shut up as we all know nothing is certain until it's in your truck and you're pulling out of their driveway. Of course there was the time (long story) that wasn't enough either so...

It's cutthroat in the Midwest. I missed out on a $500 Joker Poker after I had messaged the seller within 30 minutes. I've missed out on a few other good and cheap projects over the last couple weeks. Kinda starting to make me wonder why so many are popping up over the last month. Anyway, you gotta be first in line, and hopefuly...HOPEFULLY, the seller honors their conversation with you, if they even reach out to you, and you can seal the deal with tendered cash and a game in your truck. You win some, you lose some. It's always been that way since I entered the hobby.

#21159 2 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

In the early 90s, before Alltek brought its MPUs, LDAs and SDUs to market, there was no market for used pinball machines that were suffering from defective boards.
MY OP friend said he bought a Meteor at an arcade auction for five bucks and then he parted it out. It was not worth anything because it did not work ( I would have rather he turned it into a coffee table that I could use as a source of parts). I also met a vendor at TPF who said he used to make a fortune on MPUs that still worked. Alltek killed that money maker for him.
So, before you start castigating someone for turning a pinball machine into a coffee table, understand that yesterday's pinball market is not today's pinball market. He could have just tossed it, with its blown out play field, into the trash and none of us would know any better.
As it is, the buyer of this Nine Ball remnant got lots of good parts to use or sell. The next classic Stern coin door I buy might be from that Meteor my friend parted out. Or is could be the coin door from this Nine Ball. And I have bought lots of used Stern pinball parts on Ebay. I never gave it a thought as to where they came from.
Relax.

My understanding was that this was a recent build, not when pinball machines didn't have parts or any way of refurbishing them (as you're referring to). In that context, yeah, it's annoying that someone thought a coffee table would be of more value than the game itself, even in as is condition.

If given it was a recent build, a two second Google search would have made him think twice about it. Regardless, not my game, so at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what I think.

Spots of bare wood and chipped paint on lower playfield and around inserts, most inserts cupped. Plastics warped and cracked and very flaky back glass with the clear packing tape treatment. Cabinet 6/10. Booted up but playfield lighting was intermittent.
Seller was very nice but wouldn’t budge on price given condition. Did I miss out?
[quoted image][quoted image]

I'm messaging the seller also about it. She responded once, but has been a little quiet, probably getting a lot of messages. I would take it if it was still available. Won't be able to pick it up until the weekend though. It's been on my list for a time and the price is right.

#21174 2 years ago
Quoted from Hairball:

Good luck, she said she had lots of interest hopefully you’re next in line. I was just mentally tallying a new backglass, playfield and plastics plus a full shop job and didn’t see the math working out. Then again it’s not one I have been on the hunt for specifically.

Thanks. We set up a meeting time for Sunday. I'm perfectly happy with a players condition game. I have a wall hanger backglass that i could potentially swap out if mine is better than the one in the game. There may or may not be CPR playfields, but I might just make a pf protector for it to address the cupped inserts. Hopefully the boards are serviceable if there are any issues there. Glad to hear that it booted though! That's a good start.

#21178 2 years ago
Quoted from bluespin:

Joker Poker is a popular title, they made a lot of them, and CPR made the backglass and I believe they made the playfield as well. Should be easy to find a nice used playfield and backglass after someone swapped in new copies on their pin.

Yes, they did. Looks like they only did a silkscreened version, so I'm hoping down the line they will do a rerun (digital printed) version.

Or, as you noted, finding a nice used playfield. But to a certain point, if I'm going to do a swap, I'd rather just do it once, instead of only going to slightly nicer. I'm ok with some wear and bare wood showing. I'm not as picky as some that frequent these forums

From another picture that she sent me, the glass has some flaking, the clear tape treatment as noted by Hairball but it might present better than what I can see in pics.

Would be worth looking at. The back didn't look terrible in the pics, and the water on the wiring isn't a big deal unless it's been plugged in and turned on before drying out. For $300, at worst, it's a parts machine. At best, it's a nice player's Comet with a bit of work.

In regards to the "Stern price increase pushing me out of the hobby" thread, I feel glad and thankful that this thread exists and that I'm knowledgeable/inclined/motivated/confident enough to buy and enjoy project games. I think people that are chasing NIB games exclusively are missing out on 90% of the rest of what this hobby has to offer. There's nothing more satisfying than buying a dead game, bringing it back to life and enjoying the hell out of it, for a fraction of the cost of a NIB. I understand that some people just want the new thing, or that they don't have the motivation to work on project games but I'm glad I don't need the newest and that I can see value where others see trash.

Maybe it's because I'm only a handful of years into the hobby and haven't gotten jaded with "what's already been done." but for me, half of the fun is working on the games, while the other half is seeing and enjoying the result.

Just another thanks to everyone that keeps this thread alive and going.

#21310 2 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

Some people are great pinball players but have no idea what a screwdriver is (which is no crime ). They depend on Stern, and the other mfrs. and the kindness of friends, to keep their pins going. I feel very fortunate ( maybe even blessed ) that I have always been good with my hands.
It is no different than a great guitarist who sends his guitars to his favorite luthier for repair. And the luthier makes great repairs in broken wood but could not rake out a chord if his life depended on it.

To that I agree. I feel the same way, in that I'm fortunate that I've always been a handy DIY type of person. Housework, cars, pinball, it's all the same to me. For the most part, it's nothing that a couple of Youtube videos can't demystify. Again, I feel very fortunate that I'm more inclined than others for this kind of work.

BUT...there are plenty of used games that are in 100% working condition that won't break that bank either. Going back to the original statement, you don't need to only buy NIB games to stay in the hobby. And one could argue that a fully working EM can be more robust than a modern Stern. So there's that

#21315 2 years ago
Quoted from bluespin:

A pinhead with a LOT of experience with EMs and solid states said that for EMs, he cleans all score reels and adjusts their switches and then does the same for the replay unit. He hand tightens any loose screws and that’s it.
He said that you can spend 30-40 hours to completely disassemble all em switch stacks, clean and adjust everything, but if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll do more harm than good. For beginners (like me) stick to the steps in the first section.

With EM's I'm more of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" person Has worked well so far. It takes me a bit more than 20-30 minutes to get a game going, but I get there eventually. EM's tick another part of my brain that SS games don't. Reading (or attempting to lol) the schematics, and understanding the actual logic behind how an EM works is something that SS or newer games can't do for me and is very satisfying.

Said pinhead does what I usually do outside of a full shop job. Usually score reels and any stepper units (usually anything with a coil) gets cleaned and resleeved and they're pretty solid after that.

Like a garage sale, but they don't usually negotiate the price unless it's the last day of the sale.
Also, at some sales, they only let a certain number of people in at a time, so if you don't get there early, you might be stuck waiting on line.

I've never been to an estate sale before, but I have seen some sales show a little flexibility as far as pre-arranging a price (usually on the high side) before the official sale starts.

There is one for a TSPP in WI right now that is an estate sale but is a silent auction. Buy it now price is $9K but offers start at 50% of buying price. A strange set up if you ask me, but this isn't typical either.

And it's gone. FWIW it looked pretty clean and seemed like a good deal. A friend of mine has (or had) a GTB The Games, and it is a pretty fun game. To the point where I've thought about looking for one. Has a classic GTB EM feel, even though people often criticize that era of GTB games and how simplistic it is compared to others in the same era.

Blackout
$850
Chesapeake Beach, MD

Seller:
Project Blackout up for sale. Game not working. Existing boards do not boot. GI lights. New repro backglass, inkochnito rectifier board, and new black legs. Playfield shows some wear.

The Picture was taken with donor boards installed. All the displays work, player one and two not showing due to strobe. I’ll post more pictures on Tuesday.

For some background: I swapped out the boards last weekend with an all-in-one mpu and power supply board (new all in one board and new power supply NOT included, machine comes with all four existing boards) and the game booted played and the displays worked. There’s a lot of mechanical work still needs doing as though: The drops didn’t register and four of the stand-ups don’t seem to register. But the Kicker kicked, the flippers flipped and the knocker knocked. With the new power board in, all voltages except the -12v measured correct at the TPs.

So, as I say, a project Blackout for sale. I’m into her for $850 total, I’d like to run this mystery down, but I gotta make room for my RUSH LE, so if I can get out even, it’s a win win.

Pickup only. I’ll post more pictures tomorrow.

It could have been pulled from a roached machine. Or after a swap? (unlikely)

idk....it's not quite a WTB thread, more like a "I found a game that I think other pinsiders might want" thread, so hoping this doesn't become a WTB thread because that would clog up the intent, with dozens of people posting that they WTB.

In that spirit, please feel free to browse and continue to check in on the thread (I do whenever I see new posts), but try to refrain from posting WTBs. If I'm totally off-base, just let me know and I can edit this post.

#22397 2 years ago
Quoted from pinballboy:

Ok I understand, sorry.

It's all good. No harm, no foul. With that said, if you find something that's a project that you're not into, or is too far away or whatever, post it up here.

If you look back a few posts, you'll see the general format in which everyone posts. Important parts are:

Name of game
Location
Price
Link to original ad
Copy/Pasted description

Generally project status of any degree. The cheaper the better

Or really interesting unique items that you don't see often. Like my last post on a 60's soccer game (wish I could've gotten that one!) The way I see it, the more people from around the country we can get involved, the better the chances are of someone looking for projects being able to find one. Oftentimes, its coastal people posting Midwest stuff and vice versa. Kinda weird how that works

Had an opportunity to buy it but the killer was no lockdown bar and the glass was flaking pretty bad. Missing the whole upper left corner. I felt like I was going to go upside down on it. So actually followed my better judgement this time lol.

Quoted from DudeRegular:

What does a decent to nice Captain Card go for?

My guess is around 1k for a decent one, probably 1500 give or take for a really nice one. For that particular one, my guess would be 600-800 all fixed up. After getting parts for it, you would probably be close-ish. If it was a keeper, then a different story.

That's a very strange backglass condition. Could possibly be painted in to look decent.
I haven't seen the rest of the game. It's a desirable title.

It's in ok shape. There's rust on the coin door I can see and probably on other parts. Definitely needs a deep clean and everything gone through and replaced/rebuilt etc. For 375, you could make it worth your time in enjoyment, but probably not gain anything back when you sell. It's gone, so someone took it. If the lockdown bar were there it would be a good buy. Those alone are 100 or more if you can find one. No back panel for the head either. I thought I saw someone reproducing those but I'd have to look again. IMO, it needed too many high dollar items that made it a wash. Worth it for some for sure.

I'm not sure I will restore this. I want to get it running and play it. Buddy had topped his, looked great but I didn't play it. Theme would be perfect for the cabin we are building and there are so e electronics I want an excuse to try on an old bally.

I'd rather have a roached original pf than a hardtop. Glad there are plastics available as well. GL with getting it up and running. Ballys of this era aren't too bad. Header pins are like 99% of the problem

Bally Little Joe, Missing Backglass
WMS 4 Roses
WMS Solids & Stripes, Missing Apron

Seller:
3 EM pinball machines for one price: $500 cash

Bally, Little Joe 1972 (missing backglass)
Williams, 4 Roses 1962
Williams, Solids & Stripes 1971 (missing apron)

These were "found in a barn", and came as part of a package deal. I was more interested in the other games. Playfields have been vacuumed but NOT cleaned. They appear to be complete except for the pieces I mentioned above. I have not plugged them in or tested them. Assume these are not working. They really need to be thoroughly looked over before they are plugged in.

I have 4 legs for each, but everything is currently unbolted for ease of transport.

If this ad is still showing, it IS still available. I will not respond to messages asking about availability.

Quoted from jazc4:

My guess is that this is a scam. But if not I hope one of you NY Pinsiders gets it!

Was going to say that this might be too good to be true. Cash, in person, bring a friend.

Also definitely needs more than bulbs lol
