This is an older Bally, electronic pinball machine. It is in good shape for it's age, but it needs work.
The back glass is in great shape as well as the play field. But it won't power up. It's been in storage for years, and I would like to find a nice home for it.</blockquote>

Ha! Gdonovan, I'm going to start charging you a finder's fee!
EMs scare me. Glad you can bring these puppies back to life.

RonSS I felt the same way. Was totally intimidated by them until I took @nicovolta's EM class.

Kicking myself for a few EM's I passed on because of that.

I played a Big Ben when Nic was in town for EM class at the Chicago Street Pinball Arcade in Joliet-Ill

Nic is right......what a bore to play......

#5977 6 years ago
Quoted from Grayman_EM:

I played it when it first came out and yes it was not one of favorites. But does bring back memories of me young playing Big Ben pinball. Should they just be giving them away? Nic must love it when he has to work on one.

Not saying that BB or any pin should be given away.....just wasn't much fun.....that's probably why its on free play at the pinball arcade

#5995 6 years ago
Quoted from Grayman_EM:

GDonovan I'll take it along with the Orbit for what did I say $375.00? When can you deliver them here to me in Indiana? Maybe you can get Nic to look at that Orbit for me? By the way I have seen more Orbits here with problems than I want to.

Is that flaking or just the flash on that Spirit picture? I would on both if they had no issues to deal with and you made all four pins for say $1,200.00?

Nic just worked on an Orbit a few weeks ago.........lol

Quoted from too-many-pins:

Like with politics , legalizing weed, abortion, and so many other topics there is really not right or wrong - just different people with different ideas.
Bottom line here is this topic is "PROJECT PINS FOR SALE" not what is "fair or unfair when buying and selling used machines".
So how about we all just agree that this discussion does not belong under this topic and move on?

+1

This conversation is taking all the fun out of this thread.....

Evel was ahead of the times. By 1977 he had already flamed out and it would be another 3 years before Kmiec put the ramp and tube shot on Xenon.
$ 1,500 for EK's personal machine seems like a steal of a deal.

I agree......especially with documentation.....

EK SS was the the first pinball I purchased! Daughter and her friends love it!

Quoted from bluespin:

In the last four months I have found six project pins in different parts of the country that I was interested in buying. I posted on each occasion asking if a Pinsider in that region would be willing to pick up the pin and drop it at a Fastenal store. No one was willing to help me. This week a Pinsider posted a pin for sale in this forum. I asked if he was willing to drop the pin at a local Fastenal store after I sent Paypal funds. I provided a link to a Fastenal store locator. He responded that three local collectors were interested so he was just going to sell it to one of them.
I have posted 300+ project pins in this forum, but no one is willing to help me? I won’t be posting in this thread going forward.

Bluespin- as someone who checks out this thread every day, I'm willing to help in the western burbs of Chicago. Have a Fastenal 2 blocks away from my work.

My first month on Pinside I saw a Spectrum bg for sale at a local estate sale, checked Pinside and saw that Jody was looking for one. Messaged him and was able to grab it before the sale ended. He arranged shipping and got a sweet bg that had been used as wall art for years. Yes I made a few $ on it-but it meant more to me to help Jody complete his Spectrum......FWIW

If you decide to leave- well miss ya!

Desided to sell it earlier this year. Had a buyer and a something broke so I pulled it off the market.
Fast forward to this week. The game has been playing perfect for 6 months. Decide to sell again. Had buyer set up for this weekend.
Last night playing it the left flipper stopped working and 10 seconds later the whole machine shut down.
I am over this jinxed machine.
I have a new coil just zero interest in repairing this thing again.
This is a true fire sale."

That's a great price-lots of cab fade-hard to see playfield, but should be a great pick up for someone!

OP: For sale is a used Domino pinball machine game. I don't know much about this machine but all glasses are intact and it has been garage kept. The outside of it could use a touch up paint job. The first 2 Photos shown are of the pinball machine several years before I received it. The last five photos we're just taken a couple days ago and are the current condition of the pinball machine. It does have, and come with the keys for the change door.

So.... looks like the first 2 pics were taken DECADES ago...… ????

I was second in line on the first day. At estate sales, you have to pay what they are asking on the first day, or leave a bid and wait until it is over if is has not sold and they will call you if you are the winning bid.

I got my first 2 pins from an estate sale (EK ss & BW100), so im familiar with how they roll.....

So in your opinion did they undervalue it?

I guess its a good thing I have a M-F job, or i'd be broke with 100 pins at home.....lol

Me:not only looking at the pin, but the smoker on wheels! Anyone want to drive it up to Chicago??? lol

#13092 4 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

Thanks for posting this. I ended up snagging it. Backglass is mint and cabinet has like 2 dings. Playfield is dirty but looks like it should clean up. I think there's typical ball swirls but there isn't a game that doesn't have those from the era.
It's currently not working. After it's shopped and fixed I'm definitely open for trades on other rare games. In particular a Zaccaria Robot. If anyone has that or something else interesting and wants a really nice Voltan.

Youre welcome! Nice pick up-glad you were able to get it!

When are you driving that smoker to Chicago for me??

#13094 4 years ago

There's also a MASSIVE commercial freezer. You want that too? The range of stuff in there is quite bizarre.

Last year my wife and went to cape code on vacation. We stopped at that store to look around and noticed the two pinball machines. We asked the price and the person said they were working and wanted some crazy price(don't remember the cost). We walked back over to them look them up on pinside. We said guess they will rot in the store.

That's usually how those 'vintage' shops work....over price everything!

They probably want too much for it

With estate sales-its hit or miss....

Bought my first 2 machines at one- negotiated both down from their asking price on the second day of the sale (#evel-knievel #blackwater-100), there was a Pinbot for sale local to me last week at one and I messaged about 30 min after the sale started and they said it sold already for $1000 (not sure what they were asking but it looked to be in real good shape). Most don't do presales but if they don't state that in their ad, I'll ask about it.
But ya gotta be Johnny on the spot with cash in hand to find out...part of the thrill of the chase I guess!

Is it me or do they look HUO? Look at the other stuff at this place. Appears that it was a upper-middle-class family at minimum. Cabinets have no scuffs or scrapes. Somebody's going to go home with a nice game no matter what!

Quoted from bluespin:

I didn't look at Pinside for nine hours this afternoon.* I read 14 posts in this forum and I thought Oh no, I'm missing out on some great deal that everyone is drooling over. Instead zero project pins were posted, talk about a pin found at an estate sale, DE Jurassic park prices, etc.
Let's try to remember the intent of this forum:
Posting project pins that we found so that others can find a good deal, and help get more pins back into playable shape which helps our hobby.
Post fully working pins that are at a great price. Ex; You find a playable but un-shopped Meteor in really nice cosmetic shape for $600. We can debate the actual value (please don't), but let's agree that's a great deal.
If you see a pin with a problem that was posted in this forum, that may not be that noticeable to everyone else, point it out.
If you think a project pin is a great deal tell everyone.
If you think it's a scam, please share and help educate the rest of us as to why.
If you see a pin for sale at an estate sale or auction, post it here. We don't care the condition. Estate sales are a crap shoot, sometime people get huo pins for a fraction of it's value, other times they want crazy money. I bought a fully working pin for less than half it's value at an estate sale. Someone else posted it in this forum @nascarrey .
If you buy something because you read about it here first, tell us.
I've posted a lot of pins in this forum, but no I'm not the Op and no I'm not in charge. I just think if we remember why @pecos started this forum, we can keep that original intent going; helping people find good deals on pins, and getting more pins up and running and back into circulation with collectors.
*Yes it is possible, and no......you won't die trying.

Very well put @bluespin. What machine did ya get at that estate sale?

I got my first 2 pins at an estate sale Evel Knievel Blackwater 100 back in 2017.

#13836 4 years ago
Quoted from sndchaser:

The terms say the pictures may be stock photos and the pinballs appear to be all stock photos. As does the foosball. You can see the actual items have their auction company tag on it, and these do not, and are in all different environments. Beware!

So theyre selling 'un-pictured' merchandise at an auction??? Kinda hard to bid, if you cant see what youre buying!!!

#13845 4 years ago

#13857 4 years ago
Quoted from FatPanda:

With these estate sales, do you just show up and "get in line"? Is it an auction format? It it like a glorified garage sale? How does it work?

Each one is different. Most will not pre-sale but occasionally some do. They want you to come to the sale. I recommend getting there early to be first in line, especially if its a title you really want. Sometimes you can negotiate the price on the first day.....most wont reduce the price until the second day-although most pins don't last until the second day.

#13862 4 years ago
Quoted from ss-pinball:

Yeah, I got my first pin at an estate auction about an hour from here. It was worth it. There were two other pins there that went for much less. (the Countdown with a see-thru backglass and new NiWumph board went for $150 right after I bought Firepower 2 for $650...I don't recall what King Kool went for--all were projects).
I'm interested in that Comet a couple of hours from here...could go for peanuts or it could be sold prior to the sale. It could really go either way. I've sent a request for better pics and additional info, citing the drive. Haven't heard back and don't think I will.
I think the trick with estate sales/auctions is to have the sale be rural.
If it isn't a hassle to show up, then several pinheads will pop in to see what's up.

I bet you do get a reply....ive only have a few estate sales where they didn't respond to a request for more/better pics....after all-if they want to sell their merchandise, they should communicate with a potential buyer.

#13869 4 years ago
Quoted from bluespin:

Call back and ask what the asking price is. They won't know how to take good pictures, plus they'll be busy getting things ready for the sale so they won't have time to call everyone back. Leave a brief and friendly message like "Hi my name is John, I collect pinball machines and I see that you have a Comet pinball machine for sale. I see that it isn't turned on in the pictures. Is it currently working and have you set a price yet? I ask because your quite a distance from me. If you share your asking price, and I'm not interested, I can share with other collectors that I know in the area."
I've found that usually the estate people won't set prices until a couple of days before a show. By calling and being friendly and easy to deal with you'll have more success. That's how I talked the estate seller down $400 from her asking price on Robo-War.

Yep- kill 'em with kindness!

Thanks for this. Finally got the Grand Prix I was looking for. The pole position was toast, they wanted 200 for it. There was a twin jokers for 100 that was also missing parts (good for early bally legs though?), and an Exhibit Morocco that was probably past saving for 120. The backglass was missing a little, there wasn't much left of the play field.

Congrats! And you're welcome! I haven't picked up a pin in over 18 months...so i'm living vicariously through helping everyone else's pickups!

Quoted from Coyote:

Not sure why ANY of those were posted in the 'Project Pins' thread, honestly.

They weren't priced when I viewed the original listing.....Estate sales are a crap shoot on price...im posting to get pins in the hands of pinsiders…..some people do appreciate the leads....

Me: looks like coin door, pf and bg are in great shape!

Quoted from Coyote:

Ah, ah, okay. My bad - that's fair.
Usually the estate sales I've seen around me have had things priced.. (in general) high for the condition..

No worries.

You're right on the pricing....but sometimes they DO presell (youll have to ask seller usually). They'll usually reduce the price as the sale goes on, so theres some diamonds in the rough out there that can be scooped up at a good price...

#15194 4 years ago
Quoted from yaksplat:

starting at 12k, max reduction down to 6k. No pre-sell, even for asking price.

Sounds like they didn't want to sell it.

Every sale/seller is different....you don't know until you ask....gotta do the dirty work.

Quoted from rkahr:

Keep them coming, @nascarrey - anything coming from an these sale is not going to be warranted or offered with expert knowledge. In my view all the auctions and estate sales should be thought of as projects.

Roger that...until Pecos tells me otherwise!

Quoted from Pecos:

I won’t tell you otherwise. Bring ‘EM on!
I, personally, am not that interested in auctions because of the commissions involved, but if it were a pin I was looking for...
Estate sales can be a good place to find a Project Pin. Question, do estate sales have commissions for the seller/auctioneer? Are the pins usually auctioned or sold for a set price? We have an online auction place here in Tucson that does a lot of estate sales and you can get some really good bargains with no commissions.

Each estate sale is different.....most don't offer presales- BUT I have seen them before!
First day is full price, then prices get reduced as the sale goes on...…
Best thing to do is message the seller and politely ask if its not stated in their 'terms'.

Quoted from bluespin:

ESTATE SALE Tips:
1. If the ad says "prices will not be given out before the sale", don't bother to ask.
2. Email the seller as it's easier to dialogue that way. I rarely get my calls returned.
3. In your email tell them that you're a collector and you've purchased several pins already. They get a lot of flakes that call/email and ask questions about pricing. They rarely have pins/arcade machines so having someone who collects these large heavy machines will motivate them to respond to you.
4. Plan on being at the sale an hour before the doors open and stand in line. If you show up just before the doors open the only thing you may leave with is a backache when you help a fellow collector (that got there earlier than you) load the pin in his suv!
5. Ask if they have discounted prices on the last day. They don't always advertise a discounted last day.
6. If the sale is three days, and you couldn't get there the first day or during the day the second day, go at the end of the second day. Ask if they will be discounting the pin the last day, and if you can pay the discounted price today, but pick it up the next day.
7. I haven't seen any commissions added at estate sales. Some add sales tax, others don't. Some accept credit cards, but charge 3% processing fees.

^ +1 for this
bluespin is right-respect the seller and more often than not-youll get rewarded....

Usually its the seller that's paying a % of the sale price. I have never been charged a commission on anything ive purchased at an estate sale..
