Quoted from Pecos:

Because Project Pinsters are often around and trying to remove mouse urine and feces I need to make you aware of this concern. You may have heard of the hantavirus outbreak that killed some people in the desert southwest, called The 1993 Four Corners Hantavirus Outbreak. From Wikipedia, "From April to May 1993, there were 24 reported cases. Twelve of those people died, or 50% mortality rate. Of the 24 cases, 14 were Native Americans, nine were non-Hispanic white and one was Hispanic."
You may not be aware that hantavirus is mostly dormant during periods of droughts when mice populations decline. When mouse populations boom, the number of contacts with humans increase and the number of cases of HPS increase. However, the hantavirus is still out there. A woman was killed this year from the hantavirus in New Mexico.
From the CDC:
https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/pdf/hps_brochure.pdf
"Facts About Hantaviruses"
"Hantaviruses are a group of viruses that may be carried by some rodents. Some hantaviruses can cause a rare but deadly disease called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The disease is called HPS for short."
"While HPS is a very rare disease, cases have occurred in all regions of the United States except for Alaska and Hawaii."
"Only some kinds of mice and rats can give people hantaviruses that can cause HPS. In North America, they are the deer mouse, the white-footed mouse, the rice rat, and the cotton rat. However, not every deer mouse, white-footed mouse, rice rat, or cotton rat carries a
hantavirus. Other rodents, such as house mice, roof rats, and Norway rats, have never been known to give people HPS. Since it is hard to tell if a mouse or a rat carries a hantavirus, it is best to avoid all wild mice and rats and to safely clean up any rodent urine, droppings, or nests in your home."
"People get HPS when they breath in hantaviruses. This can happen when rodent urine and droppings that contain a hantavirus are stirred up into the air. People can also become infected when they touch mouse or rat urine, droppings, or nesting materials that contain the virus and then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth. They can also get HPS from a mouse or rat bite."
You shouldn't be overly concerned every time you buy a pinball machine that mice have used for their hotel. Like electricity, you do need to have a healthy respect for the disease.
These are some of the guidelines that I have used in the past or will be using in the future when disinfecting a pinball machine with mouse/rat urine and feces:
Do NOT bring the machine in the house or garage unless you must.
Do NOT vacuum or try to sweep up the feces.
DO take the mech board, cabinet, playfield and whatever parts show signs of urine or feces outdoors to disinfect.
DO wear a mask sufficient for filtering out small particles.
DO wet the urine and feces with a mixture of water and bleach in a spray bottle.
DO use paper towels to remove the urine and feces. Repeat until area has been thoroughly cleaned. Dispose of paper towels properly in the garbage.
DO paint the area of urine and feces after drying, if possible.
In addition, the CDC recommends wearing rubber or plastic gloves, washing them in a disinfectant after use and then disposing into the garbage.
According to the CDC, the proper bleach to water solution is:
"Mix 1 ½
cups of household bleach with 1
gallon of water. Smaller amounts can
be made with 1 part bleach and 9
parts water."
If you are going to be cleaning out a pinball machine with obvious signs of mouse activity, it is a good idea to read the entire CDC article.
https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/pdf/hps_brochure.pdf
Stay safe out there!

Important safety tip, Pecos. Thanks!

I don't understand the "lack of love" for Magic and the low selling price compared to other Classic Bally & Stern machines? This is a fairly low production machine you don't see come up for sale often yet no one seems to care about it? Or at least the "average selling price" indicates no one cares about it.

I think the fact that all the ones I've seen at shows played like crap is the biggest reason for me. I like the artwork and if I could buy one for a decent price I'd set it up properly and would probably like it. Same goes for Dracula.

I played Magic in a league. It was set up well and is a good game. For the same money you can buy a Meteor or a Stars and they are better games than Magic. Galaxy sells for about the same price as Magic and is also a good game. There are many classic Sterns that are better than Magic but are also more expensive.

P.S. Nugent is a retheme of Magic

#9930 5 years ago

Galaxy looks like a good shooter with spinners on each side, but I've never played it. Is it the rules that don't grab the player?

There's a meteor out here in CA going for 450. Some of the best bang for the buck on an early stern there.

Frankly, the artwork for me is a turn off. I wouldn't want one.

I bought this machine at the Allentown show many years ago with plans to restore it to all its glory. It was incomplete and pretty trashed and was missing a LOT of parts. I bought tons of new parts for it, so many that I am upside down on it... meaning I have WAY more money into it than the machine is likely worth.

I am a system 80 guy and re-did the CPU and power supply to harden them up. I bought a second (better) playfield for it and that is the one that is in the game now. Included is the original playfield that came with the game. The playfield that is in it now was touched up in some areas by someone, not me. The middle of playfield (blue) and around the pop bumpers (yellow). The playfield has lots of brand new plastic parts that I installed. The Complete pop bumper assemblies are brand new. All the plastic posts are brand new. All the drop targets are brand new. All four Legs and levelers are brand new also. Many of the coils are brand new also. All the pop bumper driver boards have been modified (hardened) as well. The Capacitor in the bottom of the cabinet is brand new also. The A3-J3 connector on the driver board needs replaced, but the game works fine as it is now. A lot of the connectors should be cleaned and replaced. After a time, sometimes the game won't boot, and then just by unseating and reseating the CPU board connectors the game then works fine for a long time, so I know the connectors need to be cleaned at a minimum. The backglass has some missing spots but has been clearcoated to stop it from loosing anything additional. Cabinet and head have the usual scuffs and marks for game this old.

"MIDDLE PASSIVE"... haha important to post that disclaimer with Safari.

Yanno, I don't consider Safari to be a middle-pop anymore. The pop bumper is mostly decoration. It doesn't actually do anything "pop-like", nor has any "air" around what should be the rebound zone... which is kind of important relative to the whole concept of what middle-pops are all about.

Zale made some cool games, but I guess he didn't quite get what Norm Clark was doing. Didn't put the flipper drains in either. Shame Kordek didn't try making one... would have liked to see his take on it since he & Clark worked together so much.

#9947 5 years ago

Nic, you should grab a Safari and put a real pop bumper in there - in two or three years when you have some time! Those late 60s Ballys are unique and getting hard to find. How hard could it be to put in a bumper that would pop? It sure would add a lot to the fun factor.

IPDB shows a Safari with a pop bumper.

You could keep a modified Safari in the middle-pop club!

Doing the conversion wouldn’t be difficult, but it might make the game too easy. Not much room for the ball to drain as-is. It might end up playing itself.

Also with no flipper drains, the ball would likely get stuck under a raised flipper with a side-bounce. Or snap those fins/lane guides with a strong rebound.

Overall it seems like a case of “nice try”. Has the look, but not the gameplay.

Besides, I’d rather work on a Freedom conversion kit! Might be entirely doable now that playfields are moving to digital production methods... ahaaaaa!
