As an example. You remove a board from a machine to take over to a friends house for repair. He is within driving distance. How important is it to protect the board from a static charge and what can be used if you don't have any antistatic bags to transport it in?

Like a new spike type board I wouldn't know...but Capcom/W/B I just throw in a paper bag. People put these things in a dishwasher.

I had heard that wrapping it in newspaper, and then aluminum foil would work, if there was no antistatic bag available.

I've shipped boards wrapped in aluminum foil.

Wrap those suckers in aluminum foil. Just make sure all the batteries are removed and all the capacitors have been discharged before doing so, that way you don't short anything out. The foil creates a "Faraday Cage" effect that keeps static discharge from entering the components of the board. Instead, current is discharged along the outside of the foil.
