I'm a late comer to this thread. I have an 8 oz. Gold Medal popper. I use a warmer for the fake butter topping. This is set up right outside of my home theater entrance (not pictured). On the other side of the room are my pinball machines and the bar.
Here is where the magic happens:
Popcorn machine 2.JPGI am about to try the pre-packaged kit from the Detroit Popcorn Co, just picked them up yesterday. I also got some coconut oil and Flavocol. Should I add Flavocol to the pre-packaged kit? My instinct says no........

follow your instinct

No, the kits contain enough. Only add if you are selling beverages
Quoted from njgsx96:I am curious. I have been using the sticks of oil you gave me and they really make for a great tasting popcorn, best I have made yet. We do taste-tests at work and everyone, no fail, picks the popcorn made with these sticks of oil. It even makes crappy popcorn kernels taste better! And you said you tried these and like them but they were not the best. So you feel there is better? Can you tell me what you find to be better? I might want to try them too!
And again, thank you!
Hey. What is the brand of the sticks that you have? Naks Pak? Most people usually prefer pure coconut oil over the sticks. The sticks are usually mostly coconut oil blended with a couple other oils to make sure they stay in the stick form, even when the temperature rises. We usually sell the sticks to customers that are making true caramel corn in a cooker mixer. They are just easier to use. I personally do not care for the coconut oil sticks. I find that they leave a ever so slight waxy taste on the finished product when used in a caramel corn recipe, instead of pure coconut oil. Glad you are digging them.
ok guys what am I missing? My popcorn isn't very good. I'm using the gold medal mega pop w/coconut oil for a 4oz machine. I added some orville butter oil, but it's not working for me. Who else is using this packet and what else do you add?
thanks

Lu Ann Coco-Pop Popcorn Seasoning Oil is what I have. It is a blend but I think it makes for a much tastier popcorn than just using straight coconut oil (tried a couple different brands from the local Shoprite. Not sure of the name, but they were just coconut oil.). No wax taste, maybe a very slight buttery taste.
What brand do you recommend? I love experimenting!

I think those bars are pretty good. I would stick with them!
I don't have a machine, but I have pretty good luck with Butter flavored Crisco, Pop Secret popcorn, in a Stir Crazy.
This damn pinside popcorn machine thread led me to buy a Great American popcorn machine that will be arriving this Wednesday, just in time for neighborhood movie night at my house!
I will plug back in Thursday or Friday asking questions (95% chance) or posting pictures of a successful batch (5% chance).
I do appreciate the guide for buying the right setup, it was very helpful in this purchase!

I assume you mean Great Northern?
I am ordering mine this week. The gameroom should be ready in a few weeks, and it will be here in time for that.
Does anyone have the paragon dispenser. I was thinking about picking this up to use as a butter dispenser.

I've gotten everything from Amazon due to convenience myself.

Ditto. It's fast, and the prices are good (especially if you are a Prime member).

Whoops, I meant Great Northern. It arrived today and I'll attempt to make the first batch tonight from a pre-packaged kit.
Does anyone have advice on using a pre-packaged kit? Should I warm the machine up for 3-4 minutes and just dump everything inside the kit in?
Thanks!
My daughter had a birthday party the other night with eleven girls over. I popped four batches of corn, and the machine worked like a champ.

I don't use kits. Just coconut oil. I do put it in first and wait for the steam. So I'd put the oil side first then dump in the corn if you can.

I have one and it works pretty well. I heat up the fake butter soybean oil regularly.
Also, I buy all my stuff off Amazon. I bought the popper through a Gold Medal distributor.
You know what...I had no interest at all in a popcorn machine. THEN I started reading this thread and 2 hours later an order from Great Northern for the machine and an order from Amazon for supplies. I hate you guys! LOL! Have a great weekend all!

Man, you are going to love it! I've been using mine way more than I thought I would. It just tastes so damn good. Too bad I'm probably going to give myself a coronary.

All this is much cheaper on Sams club.com

The prices are very good on samsclub.com, but they are not necessarily the best once you add tax + shipping. For example, I paid $27.50 shipped for a case of 24 Gold Medal 8 oz packets on Amazon. The same case at Sam's Club is only $20.98, but once you add shipping and tax, it's $29.83.

Great points never thought of that.
ALERT!
I was at Valley popcorn today, and they have a great deal on baby rice popcorn.
5oz coconut oil, and popcorn. $5 per case.
Baby rice is small, very tender white popcorn. They had some popped up, it was great!

Nice folks there too.

Another sale for GN .....
Great thread. And I will be 'cleaning' my kettle per vid's advice......
After looking through the thread, can someone post a more precise recipe with oz/tbl/tsp/...etc with oil, corn, and flavacol?
I see some partial recipes with said items and 'melon baller' stuff but would like something more exact. I have an adequate estimate based on some of the past posts but thought a more precise recipe with those 3 items would be great if anyone is willing to share.
Thanks!
So through random luck. last week I had no popcorn machines this week 2. I have a gold medal 6oz and a crator 6oz. I have feelings about them both. Maybe Ill make a comparison video. pop'm side by side.
Quoted from JimB:Anyone have any tips for preserving the leftovers. Ziploc bags don't cut it.
Just give it to the dog.
Popcorn is like french fries, you got to eat it fresh.
You can make 1/2 batches next time.

Oh boy, a dog with popcorn farts....

My brother used to be the assistant manager at a large movie theater, and they would always save their leftover popcorn at the end of the day. I'm not sure if every chain does this, but if you order popcorn at the first showing, there is a good chance you are eating stuff that was popped the day before.
With my Great Northern machine, I have found that if I turn on the deck heater and let the popcorn warm up for an hour or so, it's not bad the next day. Beyond that, I pop a fresh batch.
Quoted from vid1900:Just give it to the dog.
I would recommend against this if the popcorn has salt/Flavacol on it. A lot of salt is not good for dogs.

My dogs eat it all the time.
They also eat chocolate, squirrels, onions, and probably everything else that "they" say is bad for dogs.
BTW: they get all the bacon grease poured over their food too, lol.
So which machine or company is the better one? I see people talking about Gold Medal and Great Northern....
Quoted from FishPharm:So which machine or company is the better one? I see people talking about Gold Medal and Great Northern....
In general, you get what you pay for. Based on my research, I would say Gold Medal and Cretors are the cream of the crop. They are expensive, but these are the machines that most theaters and large venues use. Paragon makes high quality machines as well, but they are a notch below the other two. Last, you have companies like Great Northern. These are much less expensive machines. In general, they are made in China and aren't built nearly as well as the American made machines. That being said, they are a good alternative for someone who doesn't want to spend a ton of money. They still make some tasty popcorn, and they should hold up just fine in a home environment. I have a Great Northern popper, and I absolutely love it.
