    Quoted from Yelobird:

Thanks man! Granddaughter has been bugging me to get the Popperette going and hated to clog it up with standard oil. Ordering now. Does this coconut oil stay fairly liquid do you know? Some I’ve used in the past turn solid under a certain temp. Thanks again.[quoted image]

I have been experimenting with oils in my Popperette. I wanted to love coconut oil but I did not like it. I didn’t think the additional hassle was worth the better taste. I use Orville Reddinbacher popcorn liquid oil. You can get it anywhere and it is pretty good. If you want to use coconut oil I found the best way to get up and running quickly is to keep the oil in the machine in a glass dish. Take it out and microwave it until liquid. Remove pump and tubing and run hot water over the assembly and work the pump until all solidified oil is out. Reinstall and make popcorn. Takes about 5 minutes total. Still a hassle I do not want. Most of the time you don’t want to plan ahead to make popcorn. Just my opinion.

    Quoted from Jstampa:

I actually saw Orville Redenbacher kits on amazon and figured I'd give that a try as well. I ordered the 8 oz pack for 36 kits for $36. Basically $1 a kit. It was pretty good but very little salt. I almost couldn't really taste salt. I saw something mixed in with the kernels but I wasn't salty. Kinda thought it would be very salty. I'll have to try another pack tonight. It didn't seem to me to give double the 4oz kits did. I was surprised by that since it's supposed to be double the amount. I felt it just popped slightly more than the 4oz kit. I'll retry tonight and see.
I see people posting videos here. I've tried to figure it out and just can't. I'm not very tech smart though.

I get these all the time:

    https://www.amazon.com/Great-Northern-Popcorn-Premium-Portion/dp/B009YGQ9CO/ref=sr_1_3

Perfect for my store locations, very easy to use, tastes great.

Most popcorn flavorings taste like a chemical spill.

I got sent these in a care package, and they are indeed excellent.

Didn’t know this topic was here. Just saw it. Thought I would share my popcorn machine. The air pop popcorn is pretty bland. Want to rig up an auto butter head to add when it drops the popcorn into the bag. They made a similar machine one several years after this machine was made that had one.

Just got a machine myself. Ordered some of the preportioned packs off Amazon, to at least get the kettle seasoned. My googlefi seems to be not working, but can't find any suppliers in Charlotte area. There looks like there was one by Carowinds, but their number is disconnected. Anyone have a way of finding a distributor for bulk popcorn. Gold Medal is up in greensboro, but that's a bit of a drive.

Bulk popcorn is the way to go, absolutely!

But shipping 50lb bags kills the deal mostly.

I like this popcorn a lot:

    https://www.reistpopcorn.com/

Also you can use mushroom popcorn for variety. It takes seasoning a bit better.

    #1565 2 years ago

Look at jolly time all in one packets on Amazon. Also, naps oak and fancy farm are very good.

    #1566 2 years ago

I found you need to go through a lot of popcorn to use up the 50 lb bag. I love the prepackaged ones. Bulls Eye is the one Costco carries now and it's good but my favourite was Pop Weaver Nak's Paks

    #1567 2 years ago

Someone posted this brand in this thread and must say we found it Much better then the Jolly brand. Really good stuff.

Have a quick question. I'm not sure if it can be answered by this pic,
but here's good of a place to ask as any..
I picked this machine up maybe 15 years ago. It's still in the box.
Now that I have the room, I'm thinking about setting it up.
Maybe it's tough to say still being in the box, but will this machine
do the trick for the game room (used occasionally), or get a real machine?
    Thanks for any responses..

    Should be fine.

It's basically the same design as everything else: Kettle, Stirrer, Bin

Check the date on those bags.

The GFS that I looked at had expired and one month from being expired bags.

It takes about a year to eat the entire 50# bag, so.....

Every city has a Concession Supply joint, they only charge ~$20 for a 50# bag of golden giant

A few supply houses will ask if you have an account, just say "its for our church, Our Lady of the Lake". The guy won't find it on the computer, and you just tell him you'll pay cash then.

gfs packets are the worst. i've bought different brands for 15 years on my machine. gfs are just plain bad. most of their food is garbage, popcorn not an exception. i think it's called "vogel"

I've not had any of their popcorn. I have had some of their other food and been happy with it, great price if you want fried type appetizers. much cheaper than buying in the grocery store. i also really like their tavern cheese spread. but taste is individual. thanks for the info on the popcorn. i will avoid.

Found a place in Charlotte, not a food supply store but a bulk maker, and he does a little retail. Pops corn fir a few of the pro sports teams in town etc. Orders corn by the pallet and sells it at his cost plus a little, as well as all the containers and such.

That's my exact machine, got it at a yard sale at least 10 years ago for $20, been running strong ever since. Waaaay back in the corner -

I get all my supplies from Detroit Popcorn Company too, about 12 miles from the house.

    Great thread. Lots to read.

I get that the warming tray makes better popcorn. If you have a machine without it, are there any alternatives? Like popping the corn and then putting it in your oven?

There must be some way to simulate a warming tray for those of use that don't have one.

    #1595 2 years ago

This has definitely been a good thread. Without it I would never have heard of Flavacol and other ways to get that perfect bucket of popped corn.

The warming trays are just a hot plate.

Mine is so hot that if you let the popcorn sit a long time without mixing it up a bit, it will scorch the popcorn.

The lamps dont really heat anything.

Anything might work as a heated surface, maybe an electric fry pan on low?

Just toss it a bit to keep it from scorching once in awhile.

I have also put popcorn in the oven, portioned in bags at 175 degrees with good results.

I can’t seem to get the hang of this thing. Too soggy. I’ve tried pre heating, not pre heating. I’m using pre packaged Great Northern. This is a 6 oz machine. What am I doing wrong?

Let the steam leave the machine for 3 or 4 minutes before serving.

Toss it around with the scooper a bit.

It will dry out pretty fast.

Yes. Always leave door open after. I wait 5 minutes. Do a few tosses before walking aways. When I pop I hold door and leave slight open area to let stream escape
