I've used pipe insulation similarly.
Run it along the edge of a pins backbox where it contacts the glass when folded to prevent the head from dinging the rails, or the rails from gouging the head.
Really, you just need 2 chunks of it, one on either side, but it's just as easy to cut a length that runs the entire length of the head, and it's not expensive!
Pool noodles ARE, however, neater colors
