    That's exactly what I do, and for the exact same reason. Be aware it won't last forever, and you will have to reapply periodically. Also I don't recommend putting poly over art as it tends to be a little yellow. It looks fine over the wood area though. When the poly begins to wear, just hit it with an emery board or sandpaper and coat again. I do my scoops maybe once a year. This keeps the wear contained to the poly, which is continually replaced.
