I just picked up a Taxi and I have to polish the mylar on this one, don't want to take a chance on pulling it, too may guys recommend against it, especially on System 11's.

Has anyone else tried the "boat varnish" method of polishing mylar? Apparently you rub a small amount of this varnish into the mylar in order to fill the tiny cracks that show up as dullness.

How about Wet or Dry sanding, starting with 1200 grit, then getting finer?

Thanks,

Alan

The Treasure Cove Kit works great for polishing mylar. I have not tried it, but would presume you could get the same results with other high quality polishing systems. Autogeek.net has a good selection.

Thanks Terry. I've tried the TC kit before on another mylared playfield before, and was not fully satisfied with the results. Perhaps the mylar was just too dull to restore. But I wanted to see if anyone had had a good result with another system. I can always fall back on the TC process.

Did you use the TC polishes by hand, orbital buffer or drill? The latter will work the best.

I've used the TC kit w/ a power drill on several PF mylars.

The results have always looked great.

I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know it was possible to really polish Mylar on playfields. For me, that opens up new doors for low end restorations; especially on playfields with a "high risk" for removal of insert decals or paint.

I used a drill as it showed on the CD. I'm out of the TC Compound #3, the heaviest one, will Novus 3 be an acceptable substitute?

No idea. I don't use Novus for anything except plastics. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Curious if anyone has had experience using Novus, or if the Treasure Cove stuff is superior for some reason?

I used a drill and a homemade polisher head based on a 3M sanding disc holder (about 2" dia., covered w/ a disc of sheepskin polishing bonnet and terrycloth over the top, held on w/ duct tape around the shank). Start w/ polishing or rubbing compound, then Novus 3 then 2 then 1. Change sheepskin and terrycloth as needed, the terrycloth would wear through. Made my Mylared Cyclone beautiful, but it was very hard work and took a long time. Mylar is tough polyester.

Hey! So Alan_L how's this restoration going?
I'd be very glad to see a few pictures of this mylar polishing! Just like mbaumle I didn't even know it was possible, and I have a couple of machines that definitely correspond to the high risk section.
