I have a few spares, so I'm good for the time being
Quoted from Mk1Mod0:This machine is in a category two steps up from "HEP."
It's the sickest restoration of an 80's pin that I've ever seen. If someone knows of a sicker one, feel free to post. I have a darn nice Fathom, and it doesn't compare to this aesthetically. Would be interesting to see how the "compete" in terms of play. Took me awhile to fully dial mine in...

I appreciate the high praise, but please - let's not go down that road. There are a ton of guys in this hobby that do great work, no need for comparisons.
Downloading the finished game pics from my camera now, here's a teaser:
Here are some good close up shots that illustrate the level of detail in the cabinet artwork:

There are so many cool subtle details; like the metallic pearl highlights that sparkle when the sun hits the cabinet just right:
Quoted from Pinball-Wiz:BETTER than HEP. Period.
"Don't go down that road"? From the sound of it, he's already tried to intimidate you for people making the comparison. Pathetic.
This would look good as 80's van art also FWIW.mermaid_(resized).jpg
Yawn....
I think Mike just wants to peacefully enjoy the completion of the project.
It looks great!
Quoted from PinballMikeD:but please - let's not go down that road.
I did not mean this to reference anyone in particular, but rather the idea of a high end restoration in general. I'm a member of the low-end pin crowd. Didn't know there was a HEP company/person/entity.
I think, in the end, the only drawback to this machine is that the coin door could be a bit more shiny.
I'M KIDDING!
I enjoy every picture you post. The more the better. If there is a definition of pinball porn, this is it
Great job! I love your attention to detail and the willingness to push it beyond reason! Well done!!
This game is utterly ridiculous!! I would rather have this example than a brand new one when they were initially produced. Can I buy it, or is it sold already?
This was truly a huge undertaking, and I can't say enough how fantastic it looks. I did a total resto on a Harlem Globetrotters that took about a year altogether (and that I sold on here), so I certainly appreciate the time, energy and expense that goes into restoration. Before the HG, I had no clue about the true process of a total resto, only doing parts of games or repairing them before that.
Quoted from PinballMikeD:Sorry, but Fathom is a keeper for me. Now I just need to get my hands on a Centaur
You mean, ANOTHER Centaur

Now it's time to put some dimples on this playfield
Thanks to everyone that helped me with this restoration (Mike Walz, Michael Chestnut, Dangerwil, Ron Kruzman, Mack, etc.).
It only took a year, but it was worth every minute. I hope PinSiders enjoyed following this thread and found some of the info useful. Until next time......

Yeah, but I restored that machine for a friend, so it was only mine while it was in a million pieces.
Hey Mike,
Are those Titan silicone rubbers? Have you used them before?
I need to shop some of my pins and want to know if I should stick with traditional white rubbers.
Thanks for all the pictures! Might want to do a video of game play when you get a chance. I'd love to see the pin in action!

Make a video of the first dimple!

Time to start a waiting list, for "friends that want you to restore" their games

I'm in the middle of packing up the house, so Fathom will probably get crated later this week. Once I'm settled in at the new place I'll shoot some videos. I'll have to get HighProtein to come over and play or the video won't be worth watching
Quoted from Mando:Amazing work Mike! Trade for Shadow? LOL

Cash is King! If you can hold out until March I'll pick it up.

Yeah, but you'll have to wait over a year for me to finish the restoration
Thanks for letting us all have a inside view of this great resto mod of this machine. You and your team have inspired many owners with your fine work. Thank you.
Quoted from PinballMikeD:Yeah, but you'll have to wait over a year for me to finish the restoration
Well worth the wait!
Mike these 80's machines are amazing when restored, they seem so much more special than a 90's/2K Bally Williams when done! Personally, I'd be more willing to shell out good restoration money for something like this, you just don't come across fully restored 80's machines like this ever.
What's next? There are so many great titles with amazing hand-drawn artwork to do. With the release of the new playfields, Medusa would be a killer restoration, and the artwork is some of the best ever done and would open up options with either a stock art machine or something like you did here. Embryon would be cool.
Of course, I think we all could agree that a CUSTOM Centaur would be the bomb. Sure you did one, but not a custom one and like you said, not for yourself. I think we could all agree on here that Centaur is ONE OF THE BEST 80's games out there, period.
Either way, I can't wait to see what you do next.

It's packed up and ready for the move. How's the MET color conversion coming

It all depends on what I get my hands on. I just unload most of my Stern machines, so I have room to grow the collection again. I'm currently looking for the following titles: Shadow, Funhouse, Centaur, and Addams. I think a tricked out shadow would be cool, plus I know I'd keep it for a long time.
I have been following this thread all along, but I just gave a quick scan through the whole thing again and I wanted to make a few more comments.
First, thank you for taking the time to post all of the pictures and descriptions. This provides a really nice and detailed how-to guide for anyone who would want to tackle a similar project. Especially someone with less experience.
Second, every aspect of this is awesome, no doubt. But I went back to the part where the cabinet got the artwork. Just so that I understand this correctly: Am I right in assuming that this cabinet was completely painted by hand (with airbrush)? As opposed to using any decals? And that this was done by the person named "Mack"? Who is Mack anyway??? It looks really amazing (duh). It is just incredibly cool how the cabinet artwork was completely changed from the original, yet fits so perfectly with the machine and looks awesome.
Finally, in various posts you mentioned that you might end up selling it one day. I got to thinking about it, and thought - how can you even put a price on this thing? Let's face it, there is not one like it anywhere in the world. It is a beautiful piece of art. Of course, it is a pinball machine, so more than likely the potential buyers are people who like pinball. In the end, you could ask any price you want, but of course what it can actually be sold for will depend on what one buyer is willing to pay. However it goes, I'm like many others - this would be an awesome machine to own! Thanks again for all of the pictures and descriptions.
Quoted from PinballMikeD:It's packed up and ready for the move. How's the MET color conversion coming
sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowly. it would have helped if you would have colored things IN ORDER!!!!!
I'm creating a spreadsheet so that we can map all of the changes in addresses from v1.63 to 1.64 as well as what the actual animation is. once I have that complete, I'll probably re-build the your entire script file so that it works in v1.64 without a hitch.
I was also thinking of saving the macro file as several files (based on the animation sequences) so that you could just make a small change and apply it.
<begin sarcasm>it's a good thing that I don't have anything else going on right now
